just a question to any lesbian who might be reading... how do you feel about all the overt lesbianism as seen in a high proportion of music videos nowadays (BEP, gaga, katie kissed a girl etc etc)? I wonder do you find it insulting? do you view it as 'jumping on a bandwagon'? I am just curious to hear views on this, no real opinion myself, but I have noticed it a lot more lately and I'm thinking why now? and why no men kissing??

I would think Bi-Sexual woman would be more offended. The woman you describe aren't attempted to pass themselves off as lesbian but rather super kinky hot foxes from sexy street who are a little bit bad and mad.

that was what I was wondering... is the portrayal of lesbianism in these videos very superficial and out to give the impression that all lesbians are bad and mad as you put it and its a choice they make (nothing to do with sexuality per se)? or do you think these artists are genuinely experimental or bi/gay?

I don't think they're trying to come across as Lesbian at all nor do i think it's genuine.

I wouldn't call it lesbianism, more women trying to appeal to heterosexual men by fulfilling the so-called "girl on girl" scenario. I'm bisexual and one thing that always annoyed me was all those girls you see on a night out in some ****hole kissing just to try and get attention from the guys. You know if you were interested in them and were talking to them sober they would have no interest in you (as a bisexual girl).

On a seperate note remember that Heinz ad that got banned becuase of the men kissing (I wouldn't call it kissing, more a peck on the cheek)

Glad to see you had a productive evening for missing the TCD beers, Tricity. How would the LGB forum ever have survived without that pic for 12 more hours?

Men kissing is very hot but obviously depends on the guys kissing. two hairy, overweight guys maybe not.

remember that, how stupid that they pulled the add in this day and age. I must boycott Heinz products.

I bet if it had been two women there wouldn't have been such an outrage. Faux lesbianism/bisesexualism is okay for women to do because it turns some straight men on but two men no way. One of my friends always squirms when she watches Eastenders with Sayed and Christian kissing, I don't get it, these are two really hot men I don't mind seeing them kiss at all :p

Nah, society finds pretty much any two guys making out in public disgusting.

Yup, that's pretty much it. When two women kiss, it's "hawt". When two men kiss, it's "ghey".
I doubt a male singer releasing a song called "I Kissed a Boy....and I Like It" would have got to No.1.

It's a ****ty double standard but unfortunately it seems to exist. :(

I always wonder why guys get such a strong reaction to two guys kissing.?

In my opinion guys have a problem with it because they feel that if they have disgust for it then no other feelings can come through. Surely if you are not gay/bi than it should just cause indifference. I wish straight guys would just get the **** over themselves and maybe consider that they are not the raging ball of unquestionable testosterone that they think.

I don't fancy girls but two girls kissing doesn't make me sick. it's totally fine in fact. I wouldn't go searching for two girls getting it on on the net but if it came on telly I wouldn't have to switch it off for fear of my dinner coming up. It's just stupid.

Finally when I did eventually start to go to gay clubs I found the sight of two guys kissing strange, but it was just something you don't see. My sister said the same thing but when she lived in Sidney she saw it everywhere and now wouldn't bat an eyelid.

So in summary if you find 2 guys kissing disgusting then you are a closet fag.

That might be true in some cases but I don't think it's accurate to claim that about everyone who finds two guys kissing disgusting. Some people genuinely just find homosexuality abhorrent and wrong - it sucks that there are people like that but there will always be some who just won't be swayed on their beliefs. I doubt all such people are "closet fags".

    I dont mind either...

hrrrm maybe this double standard exists because female sexuality is viewed almost entirely through the heterosexual male gaze in most mainstream media....
As women only exist for the sexual gratification of men and possess no sexual agency of their own, two women kissing are only doing so to please men and there's no real question that they're not sexually available.

Two men kissing is entirely subverting this - if men start deriving sexual pleasure from other men it throws the whole men active/woman passive power dynamic off... so it's deeply uncomfortable.

    - I kissed a girl continuously references her boyfriend, no chance she's genuinely homosexual and therefore not available for heterosexual males.

Banning that commerical is outrageous. It was so basic, charming and amusing.

thanks rhubarbular... this is what I was thinking and you have articulated it very well... plus I had missed the covert references to her boyfriend in that song... (I just know the lyrics in choruses;make up the rest myself but that's probably a different thread)... this is very interesting wrt 'real' acceptance of different sexualities...

Doesn't bother me. It doesn't offend me. I don't buy it though. I think they only say they're bi for sex factor. They clearly think the public are stupid/ gullible.

So you're boycotting a company that produced an ad which normalises families with homosexual parents because said ad was banned?

em yeah.! why the question mark, I thought it would be pretty obvious why I said I'd boycott heinz. In any case the add is meant to be a joke and the "wife" is swapped with a male new york deli worker. It's not meant to "normalise" families with homosexual parents.

Nah, society finds pretty much any two guys making out in public disgusting.

MOST people probably do, but thats because of societal brainwashing.

I recall about 20 years ago the idea of two women together was regarded by most males as just as disgusting as two guys together. Its only been popularised by the porn industry marketing it as "sexy" and in many cases making the two women involved conform so much to hetero stereotypes it creates the "available for you too" illusion. The male hetero porn viewer is somehow indicated as the potential 3rd partner in a 2-women scene. This is largely achieved by removing any vestigate of stereotypical images associated with lesbians out of the women involved and replacing them with hyperhetero stereotypes.

Since a lot of women too have been rejecting traditional lesbian stereotypes in the last 10 years its not surprising that marketing has caught onto the idea that it might sell.

That said, I think a lot of it may be accidental. An old friend of mine, a singer songwriter who had a little success back in the early 90s, found herself snowed under with letters from closeted lesbians because she "looked" gay. Actually she's 100% hetero and has been bewildered for years, but she's never exploited it as the music comes first.

The porn of the past twenty years or so has indeed pushed the heterosexual male's idea of lesbianism.. Similar to the way porn has conditioned a lot of men to find pubic hair on a woman disgusting.

But it wasn't always like that. Lesbian erotica has been enjoyed by men for centuries.

I think that's nonsense. Men don't find pubic hair disgusting. They just find a shaven vagina much sexier. I disliked pubic hair before i ever watched porn

Ok. Silly me. Can't believe I didn't notice that when I first watched it. Still don't think its worth boycotting them. Its a bit pathetic the ad was banned. Much funnier now that you explained it.

It's not rubbish, a large number of men are turned off by pubic hair, and a lot of them have been conditioned by porn. Not even mentioning the young men today who don't even know what a real woman's genitals look like. Good for you if you're not one of those.
