    Hi Guys,

I'm sitting in work and this song just came on the radio for the millionth time (probably because Beyonce is a hero at the moment cause of the whole Kanya thing) but my God it absolutley does my head in.

I have nothing against Beyonce. I think she has an amazing voice, a stunningly beautiful face and body and she seems like a great girl but this song is just insulting.

I'm not a fan of her music anyway but it's the lyrics of this song that drive me nuts. She portrays women as these pushy, demanding bridezillas who can't wait to shove their partners up the aisle and if he doesn't propose within a certain timeframe 'he aint worth it girlfriend!'.

I, for one, have never wanted to get married and my two sisters are the same. One of them has recently found she's pregnant but she still has no desire for her boyfriend to 'put a ring on it'.

Anyone else agree that this song is insulting? I just think it gives out a horrible message (and sound)
    Apologies to Beyonce fans!

ok I am not a fan of the lady or her style of music but I do get the point of the song.
It's not about shoving someone up the isle or about getting preggers it is about the fact
that to some people they do want to get married and they get into a serious relationship and move in together and then get told sure why bother getting married, why buy the cow when you are getting the milk for free.

They want a comittement and they are right to be clear about it and say it.
If you don't want to get married and are happy then fine and fair enough but I think that those who do should be clear and up front about it early enough in the relationship rather then feel lead up the garden path and end up bitter after 3/5 years.

I haven't listened to the lyrics intently or anything but that line 'If you like it then you shoulda put a ring on it' just really bothers me.

Everybody is different and I knwo to some people it's extremely important and I don't think there's anything wrong with that, it's just not for me.

I know the song isn't about being pregnant. I just think it gives the impression that every girl wants a ring on her finger and I personally hate when women are portrayed that way.

i took it more as a "hes jealous when he sees her with someone else, dont like it? oh well you shouldve married me". which - if you wanted marriage and he didnt - seems fair enough to me.

hate that feckin song tho, wrecks my head.

& not its gonna be stuck in my head :(

Well, in the song, she's actually talking about herself, as it were.
Cuz if you liked it then you should have put a ring on it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it
Don’t be mad once you see that he want it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it

She's upset as her young man wasn't interested after being with her for 3 years, and they broke up. When he saw another young man was showing interest, he became upset. She retaliated by saying 'Oh well, if you liked it, you should have shown some commitment. You know, a ring or something'

    Just for discussion purposes
    Single Ladies Lyrics

    All the single ladies (7x)

    Now put your hands up
Up in the club, we just broke up
I’m doing my own little thing
you Decided to dip but now you wanna trip
    Cuz another brother noticed me
I’m up on him, he up on me
    dont pay him any attention
cuz i cried my tears, GAVE three good years
Ya can’t be mad at me

    [Chorus]
Cuz if you liked it then you should have put a ring on it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it
Don’t be mad once you see that he want it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it

wo oh ooh oh oh ooh oh oh ooh oh oh oh x2

(Chorus)Cuz if you liked it then you should have put a ring on it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it
Don’t be mad once you see that he want it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it

I got gloss on my lips, a man on my hips
hold me tighter than my Dereon jeans
acting up, drink in my cup
I couldnt care less what you think
I need no permission, did I mention
    Dont pay him any attention
    Cuz you had your turn
    But now you gonna learn
What it really feels like to miss me

    (Chorus)

Cuz if you liked it then you should have put a ring on it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it
Don’t be mad once you see that he want it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it

woo oh ooh oh oh ooh oh oh ooh oh oh oh 2x

Don’t treat me to the things of this world
I’m not that kind of girl
Your love is what I prefer, what I deserve
Is a man that makes me, then takes me
And delivers me to a destiny, to infinity and beyond
    Pull me into your arms
Say I’m the one you WANT
If you don’t, you’ll be alone
And like a ghost I’ll be gone

    All the single ladies (7x)
    Now put your hands up
woo oh ooh oh oh ooh oh oh ooh
    oh oh oh 2x

Cuz if you liked it then you should have put a ring on it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it
Don’t be mad once you see that he want it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it woo oh ooh 2x

It's a song, you probably shouldn't take it too seriously.

If the song was "you're not a real woman unless you get married", you could be duly aggrieved.

To people who find it insulting, you are either married or you are not in the US.

OP - I doubt very much that your pregnant sister would like to be refered to as her boyfriend's "baby mama" and have no more status or respect than some floozie he knocked up.

Then she would certainly say "put a ring on it I aint nobody's baby mama."

I know exactly what she is talking about in this song. I was with a man for the last 5 years and it came to the stage where it was make or break. He could have asked me to marry him and we would be very happy right now but it went the other way and he decided to break up, So i get it totally when she says if you liked it then you should have put a ring on cause he aint gettin a second chance.

I think you have to be in that situation to really understand it!!

Oh, yuck! Beyonce is one of my pet hates. Go to the thread I started about her in the Ranting & Raving forum a few weeks ago. As for that song, it's just another earworm tune that sticks in your head like a leech.

Hmm, I see why it would annoy you OP, but I agree with the others. I don't think it's meant to say that she's desperate to get married, but that she broke up with the guy as he couldn't commit (or some other reason) and gets jealous when she's seen with another guy. i.e. he doesn't want her but doesn't want anyone to have her either. I think the ring part is just a cool way of saying "well, you had your chance"

It is just quite a vapid (but catchy) pop song though so it's probably not a good idea to look in to it!

Very unusual and different production on that song. I have to say I like what they did with it. As for the lyrics? Meh, as others have said it's dancing around the handbag muzac. It does have some empowerment thing going on, like a fair bit of her and destinys child stuff. Its well aimed at a certain market.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Actually most of her music is far from empowering. When you listen to the lyrics of so many of her songs they tend to promote shallowness and selfishness as supposed feminism. Women are independent because they "buy their own diamonds and rings." If she were a boy life would be so much better because (s)he'd know her girlfriend would never cheat, implying that most men cheat while women are blameless in relationships. Why the hell is Single Ladies even called that, it's about her ex being jealous of her new relationship - that's got nothing to do with being single?

Her (and Destiny's Child's) music has always made me cringe. They promote unadmirable personality traits as feminism. And they tend to be so bloody man hating. That's not empowering, it's just ugly.

There is a trend atm which says if you are not married then you are single ( which legally is the case )
and that the commitment of getting married superceeds any other and that anything else is not acceptable.
It's one of those back lashes that happens as we swing back and forth trying to figure out what works for and in society and it's a pretty important one I think in terms of the family unit.

Yes you can be in a wonderful, faithful committed relationship and that is the back bone to a good happy nurturing family with out being married but in respects the dice at least legally esp in this country are loaded against you.

In the US this is and always has been the case. No ring, no commitment, and your community will not take it seriously either.

Until one stands in an African American's woman shoes and has dated african american men, no one should judge destiny's child or beyonce. [I am not a fan of this music btw, I just know what context they are working with.]

It's a great song to rock to and any over thinking it is silly. If you dont like, that's cool, but don't make out that those who do like are any lesser for it.

My only problem with it is the people who think that because I like the song I wanna get married, which is not the case at all. I like the whole empowerment f*you if you didnt want me dont be jealous about my moving on thing. Doesnt mean I plan on marrying my next distraction either.

Just on this point..the lyrics tell of her being in a club after her and the ex just broke up. She's dancing with a man. That doesn't necessarily mean its a relationship. What I got from it was she's on a night out and flirting/dancing with a fella and her ex is jealous....so, yeah, she's single :)

That wasn't at all as coherent as it was in my head. I'm a tired bunny today.

I like it as a song. I dont think she is telling women to act like they want a ring on it. I think it is great observation as a song. It is like that song irreplacable (v bad spelling). I sort of thought when I heard the song first she loves herself and having been forced to endure her album (my wife plays it all the time) I think she just comments on life.

Sidenote ; My wife went to see her when she played here and I said how was it. Hewr response " Beyonce is only woman that would turn me gay". I replied " she was trying to cycle here till the guinness storehouse got in the way":D

On the rare few occasions I ventured out lately I found myself getting quite embarrassed by this Single Ladies stupid song
    - it comes on and all these FOOLS get up dancing SERIOUSLY dancing to it, no shame whatsoever. I wanted to hide in the bathroom so I did.
The club was quiet and I subconciously felt every man who was there were scrutinising the women for reactions.

Maybe its because the video is (imo) DISGUSTING - big mad shiny legs opening themselves up like letting rip or something AAAGGGHHH
    - Gives the impression that women are gross little creatures who do **** like that in their bedrooms.
That vid should have been banned.

Back to the song itself - SO REPETITIVE! Like LOTS of her other songs
    - Anyone else still unable to get that blasted "Say my name say my name" or "Bills bills bills" out their heads yet???

I DO like "Halo" though, but she says it a LOT :):):)

Also, check out U Tube Pot Noodle Kebab ad - Complete genius at taking the piss out the vid - It wasnt widely broadcast on TV but is there to see, wish I could create a link to it
    - If anyone can - PLEASE DO!!!

I agree with you re the repetitive nature of her songs(and lots of others). It seems a regular thing these days. Find a hook/chorus and repeat it endlessly. Throw in some fantastic off the wall production in Ms Knowles case and away you go. I reckon it's down to the soundbite generation and how the mainstream TV/radio stations work esp in the US. They may only play a snippet of the song so you have to get in and out very quickly to have an impact.

Ye olde stylee songwriting won't cut it in that arena. It's more "infectious". Makes it easier for the songwriter too in a way. Get the hook and away you go. You dont have to develop it much. Though you still need the hook and that's a talent in of itself but it feels far too much like songwriting by numbers.

It seems to be getting worse too. I mean Britney spears, hit me baby one more time actually ahs a fair few separate hooks in it. The "dum dum dum Oh baby, baby, I shouldnt have let you go" bit at the start hooks you into the song and then a couple more highlights keep you there. Beyonces stuff(and others) not so much. Lennon & McCartney would have their work cut out for them today.

Then there's the demographic it cynically IMHO aims itself at. I like her, I think she's one talented woman and her songwriting input on other stuff has shown promise. I for one hope one day she does her "me on a guitar, actually speaking from the heart without care for ratings" album.

On the mad shiny legs part, I have to admit a fondness for that aspect of it. Strong athletic looking women strutting their stuff? Not some anorexic fashion model types who look like a stiff breeze would carry them off. Call me a pervert if you must, but......

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
