hmmm...you'd have to wonder will the GAAW people protest this arrival of a replica of an 18th Century atmed vessel of the King's Navy? Got some nice pictures of it coming in past Nimmo's Pier, will try and get them up if i can ever find the cable for my camera...

Nah come on... the 18th century has got nothing on the cruelty of the modern world.

I was talking to one of the guys last night and was told you have to pay to go on board €7 for adults and €5 for kids, I was told you can only visit the top part of the ship which is not worth it for that kind of charge.

Anyone else curious as to what JohnCleary was doing last night?

The bounty wasnt really a warship per-say it was a refitted cargo ship, and the mission was to bring back breadfruit!
im dissapointed that you cant go below deck, 7 euro is fairly steep.

Anyone else curious as to what JohnCleary was doing last night?

I'm guessing it involved some baby oil, kleenex and a poster of Linford Christie

Just back from the docks and subject to my last post you are allowed down below which is fair enough but it still is a bit steep to go on board.

Couple of pictures of her when she came in last night. Still getting used to the night shooting so they could be better, but at least they will give you the idea of what she looks like.

Anyone know when it's leaving? Really want to get a shot of it sailing off... so if anyone knows roughly, I can figure from the tides for the dock gate...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 489 ✭✭foxy_19-89

saw some little sh*ts robbing things off it after work last night, one of the signs that were on display during the day from what i saw.

gardai managed to chase after them up as far as Merchants Road, delighted they got caught.

was trying to call Mill St. but had no battery, and couldnt find the dang charger!

Suppose to be leaving on Monday. Don't know which tide though. High waters on Monday are at 00.30 and 12.52

I was just on the Bounty earlier, it sets sail for Florida, possibly via The Azores, "around noon-ish" tomorrow. Will run with engines until out of port, then the sails will be put out in the bay. They reckon to be at sea for about 40 Days. I saw them really loading with supplies earlier, a lot of stuff was put on, nearly all white packet St. Bernard cheapo food.

Incidentally, for those interested, it was used in Disney's Pirate of the Carribean 2 & 3. In "Dead Mans Chest", its the ship that picks up jacks hat when he orders it to be left in the water and not retrieved, which is then pulled down by the Kraken.

In "At Worlds End", its one of the larger fleet of Pirate Vessels just before the big battle scene, though i'm not sure which one.

Might head out on the water to see it off tomorrow if weathers nice. Will bring the camera

Have to say it is a pity it wasn't lit up somewhat at night, both Bar No.8 and Sheridans had nice viewing spots for it last night but it was indistinguishable against the night sky. Lovely boat tho to look at during the day.

She sailed off on high tide this afternoon. Kept an eye on the harbour webcam then headed down when she was ready to go!

Was hoping to get it just passing the end of Nimmo's Pier but juuust missed it. Here it is coming up on Mutton Island...
    3962676940_d23416c868.jpg

Waited for it to pass Salthill hoping for the sails to go up but they never did. :( Does it have a motor as well? It seemed to be tacking and jibing a bit, as it was against the wind - would it be running purely off the wind against the side of the boat? (I know nout about sailing!) If I had time I'd definately have followed her out to the mouth of the bay and try get a photo with the full sails.

Must have been right beside you! Followed it from Nimmo's pier out along the walkway then out the long walk to the Mutton Island lighthouse. Have photo's but not uploaded them to pc yet. Weather was a bit muck too and was slightly disappointed not to see the sails go up but it looked like they were sailing directly into the wind, so putting sails up might not have been in their best interest!

    Hi gary82

yes she has an engine and they use it for when there is no wind and docking etc. pity they did not put the sails up.

HMS Bounty, seen here in Galway Sept 2009. Sadly, seems to have been lost as a result of Hurricane Sandy. She has been reported to have sunk near the eye of Hurricane Sandy 90 miles SE of Hatteras, North Carolina. 14 Crew members rescued by USCG, but sadly 2 are still missing. Sad news indeed, hoping that they find the 2 crew members missing.

What in the name of God were they doing out there in the hurricane in the first place??? The weather system had been flagged for days, surely there was time to run for shelter, or if they were only on their way over to the east coast USA (seems possible from early posts on this thread) head back out to open sea to wait it out?

Genuine question, btw - maybe it's a bit simplistic and I know the storm was HUGE, but sinking in or near the middle of it seems just mad

RIP to those who died, hope the captain is found eventually.

ETA - just read the article properly - they purposely headed out into it - "a ship is safer at sea than in port" - WTF??? The ship, maybe, but not the crew

It seems to have gone down near Cape Hatteras in N Carolina. The geography of that area is lethal. The cape juts out into the Gulf Stream and in strong winds there are very confusing wind against tide seaways. It's a graveyard of ships, especially sailing ones. Although she was likely using her motor, trying to keep her forest of spars amd rigging into the waves and winds must have been difficult. Makes me think of A Perfect Storm. I couldn't sleep for days after reading it.

See http://www.nytimes.com/ for damage to NY Citu and surrounding areas. Awful.

    Another tall ship gone.
I wonder how our Jeanie Johnson would have faired with her water tight bulkheads and extra heavy ballast. It is a pity to see her always tied up with the unfinished Anglo building in the background.

When is the money (including lost growth) Michael Noonan took in the Pension Levy going to be paid back?
