Hi, was considering getting a .22 rimfire as starter rifle, and was wondering if i have to buy the gun safe before im granted a license? Seems a bit stupid then if im not actually granted a license!. Does putting a deposit on rifle and gun safe meet the new requirements? Would there be any objections to me gettin a semi-auto over a bolt action. thanks in advance

The way it went for me was, I waited until the licence was granted until I got the safe. It was signed off, but I could not collected it until the safe was installed. I don't know if that's the way it works country-wide, it was a condition of the licence being issued.

I stated at the application stage that it would be stored in a safe, but I wasn't required to purchase one until the licence was granted.

thanks for the quick replies.so a deposit on a gun and safe should be enough til i get the license. what about getting semi -auto as first rifle. would da super object to this?

no it dose'nt matter if you get semi or bolt, but you must have a good reason for getting it in the first place. "member of a club, vermin control"

Prerequisit or not anyone who has firearms should have a safe and use it.
Personally I would also recommend trigger locks aswell
    Best of Luck with appliaction

.......this would be the best idea. Show a receipt for your deposit on a gun safe. State you will buy and install the safe on confirmation of a successful application.

I'm nearly sure i read somewhere (Garda info, DOJ ????) not to take any action in relation to additional security measures until it is confirmed that you have your licence. The Gardai etc don't want frivolous lawsuits from people trying to claim/sue for the cost of security upgrades they have had installed only to be refused a licence.

That's definitely the best common-sense method ezri, and if your local Super will allow that route, then it's the best one to take (and ask - he may not be an ogre :D ).

But if he says no, the law is pretty clear. From section four:
An issuing person shall not grant a firearm certificate unless he or she is satisfied that the applicant complies with the conditions referred to in subsection (2)
    ...
    (2) The conditions subject to which a firearm certificate may be granted are that, in the opinion of the issuing person, the applicant—
    ...
    (d) has provided secure accommodation for the firearm and ammunition at the place where it is to be kept
My emphasis, obviously - the law says no licence until after the super is satisfied that you've provided (past tense) secure storage.
Now if a receipt will satisfy him, cool. But if he doesn't know you from adam, that may not be enough for him and if not, you're out of options really.

Still, the best advice is to go talk to the man. (And Jamsie, I really wouldn't call him "da super" unless he's actually your father :D )

Yeah, he should go see his Super or FO of he can speak on Supers behalf. Hopefully they will exercise some common sense and allow the application to go through and if its successful make him get the safe etc before releasing the licence. Another member of the ever growing "wait and see" tribe.

i believe anybody that owns a firearm should have a safe.
I have 2 kids hanging arround the house and wouldn't like to see one walking arround with the rifle.

    I agree.
For those who use safes, Where would you guys store your ammo when the gun is in the safe?
You know how you are not supposed to store gun & ammo together but in theory a locked safe is possibly the safer option when there are kids around. (Unless they get the key of course!)
I store my ammo in the safe but also lock the trigger. I don't store the keys of the safe & lock together so in theory it should be safe.
I saw a nice little fireproof safe online which you lock with a code, was thinking of using that for ammo altogether & keep it in a seperate room.

i keep the ammo in the same safe as the shotgun (and the soon coming rifle ) , i only have one safe.
    The key is hidden.
This way the kids will not get access to it.
Regarding eventual thiefs, well the 3 dogs i feed everyday will take care of them .

In fairness lads its better to have them secured away in the same safe as opposed to out in the "open".
