It's nearly that time of the year, does anyone know if the aforementioned retailers are going to be running any specials (cheap cans of lager do not count!), and if so, any idea what can we look forward to?

The hefe is pretty good alright. I have not tried the pils yet. Might get myself a keg of both as 9.99 for a 5 litre keg is a bargain I think

yeah i had a few kegs of this as Grafwalden Weiss as well, its good stuff for the price, it sure beats a similar keg of hino for €19.99, as long as its all drank the same day as its opened (it tends to be a bit flat the next day with no head)
PS stay away from the Aldi & lidl wine you get what you pay for the price is cheap and the wine is reflected in this.

Picked up a keg of Grafenwalder Pils for 10 euro in Lidl last night. Not bad, but I did find the keg hard to use, a lot harder to use than the keg of Lowenbrau I usually pick up in Munich Airport on my way back to Dublin airport..

Any info on what LIDL will be offering in the near future, beer wise..

i wonder will they have beer offers on the 5th or 8th October ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 228 ✭✭redshoulder

Pity no Kostritzer this year, had it last year and it was good.
Spaten Oktoberfest is alright but I'll get a crate of Lowenbrau Oktoberfest instead because it's great, and Licher is good too.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,484 ✭✭✭JIZZLORD

licher is good stuff. i bought a a pack of it last year only because there was the free glass. but i really liked it. will buy a good pile of it this year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,883 ✭✭✭pa990

i only got it (licher) last year for the glass as well.. tasty stuff.

i'm tempted to buy lots of beer this time round..

Can anyone tell me how long the Spaten Oktoberfestbier & Löwenbräu Oktoberfestbier will keep for ?

I know that weiss biers are best drank fresh, while others (duvel, orval etc) will mature with time

They're both in and around the 6% mark, so they're not going to go anywhere for the next while. I'd safely give them a year, if not more.

I came across last years spaten oktoberfest around a month ago and it was still perfectly fine anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 redhugh

    woooohoooo
dont be afraid to stock up on this, it usually goes fast and the only other people to stock this oktoberfest brew are o'briens off licences and they charge nearly 70 cents more per bottle, so dont hold back on buying a case of each (it wont go past its use by date)

Picked up 2 cases (20x50cl) of LowenbrauOktoberfestbier, and 1 case (20x50cl) of Spaten Oktoberfestbier this morning at 10:30am
    :):):)

between that, and the Hommel i picked up recently.. i reckon the house is pretty well stocked up :D

i should have enough to see me thru till xmas, if not beyond

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,883 ✭✭✭pa990

BTW: the aldi i went to had only 5 cases each of spaten/lowenbrau.

Dunno if they will be getting more in during the week.
I know that when lidl were doing a special on beers a few months back, they restocked once or twice during the week

Do you still need the garda age card to buy from these places?

Its really annoying that I get asked for it there and they won't accept drivers license as proof of age.

Picked up as case of Lowenbrau and a pack of Licher today, there was only 4 cases of Lowenbrau and Spaten left at the afternoon.

I'm just back from Aldi in ballyphehane (Cork City) with two cases of lowenbrau, the brother got one for himself. They have about eight cases of lowenbrau left. Plenty of spaten there as well. Happy days :D

    You try the spaten yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 682 ✭✭✭IrishWhiskeyCha

    Got some of each ... lowenbrau x6, spaten x6 & Licher. x 2 boxes.

Really loved the Licher so much so I went back for more today :D

To be quite honest I was never a fan of the regular Spaten and the Octoberfest version is no major improvement. It is fine but and grand to drink but I won't be buying a case.

Have not tasted the Lowenbrau yet but will tonight.

Anyone know if LIdl is stocking the Spaten Oktoberfest or is it just Lidl?

Think it's Just Aldi and not Lidl or LIdl :p

    Tucking into a Lowenbrau now .... mmmm ... tasty ... I like.

Was in my local Aldi today and they have plenty available so may pick up a few more

How does the Licher compare with Schofferhofer?

For me the Licher is much better. I've tried the schofferhofer a fair few times but find it a bit light but good for the price. The Licher seems to have a better flavour for me. I've had a fair few different brands of cloudy wheat beers and these ranks up there for me. But I'm no expert I just like what I like ;-)

Grab a box and see what you think and go back for more if you lke it

I find Schofferhofer very gasey and lacking in flavour.Havent tried Licher yet but you can get Franziskaner in Lidl still for the same price as schofferhofer and it's a far superior Weissbier.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,399 ✭✭✭sozbox

Haven't tried Franziskaner yet, must give it a go. I'm having Licher at the moment, I find it has less flavor than Schofferhofer, again that's just my taste.

I couldnt believe it when I saw the Leffe appearing in Lidl. I thought it was going to be in stock regularly and not just on special offer. So I bought 2 cases... and went back in a week later for more to find it had sold out, but not just in Donegal Town, but in Letterkenny, Bundoran and Dungloe also. The Lidl over the border has completely different special offers on. In fact, they stock a load of different goods than in the south.

Where you can still get the large bottles of Leffe is in the Co-Op Superstore chains in the North, and they are aroun £3.25 for a 75cl bottle

Just goes to show everybody has different tastes ... for me it's the other way around  what one likes another may not neccessairly like. Also every one tases differently and can get different tastes from an identical product.

Jaysus! You'd nearly think it was a totally different country with a completely different excise arrangement.

    Franziskaner is god/gold!

My favorite beer, the only one I drink at home and only wish pubs would serve it here but I can't find it in any pubs :(

Definitely give it a try everyone because its almost perfect as far as I'm concerned :D
