I've seen it a few places (it's not confined to Dublin), there's a thread in AH on it but I don't remember seeing one here.

Does anyone here go out in them? and why?

I shouldn't start threads at this hour, I'm tired and probably don't make sense.

I wouldn't do so myself, but meh, it's probably just a comfort thing. I suppose once you're covered up, you don't have to wear day clothes.

I remember when I was a kid I always wanted to be able to just head off out in my pyjamas - getting dressed can be quite a hassle at times... :D

I take Jake the puppy out in my pjs early in the morning when I plan on going back to bed later.

When he was younger, this often involved walking all the way down to the corner before he'd go. Now we stay in the backyard.

i think its terrible to see girls walkin around in their pj's and if the go back and then go into bed it has to be unhygenic

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,328 ✭✭✭✭Busi_Girl08

It started off with girls wearing their pyjama pants under their skirts at school "to keep warm", it's not that cold, and you look like an idiot. I'm sorry.

Now going out to walk the dog in the morning is fine, but going out to town or to do shopping, you really do look ridiculous. It really does sadden me that someone would go that far just to get a few minutes extra sleep in the morning

  • I've only ever seen a certain type wear pyjamas outside in Ireland. I still don't understand the point in it. I did my TEFL training in a school on the northside - all the foreign students were telling their families back home that "all the Irish ladies wear pyjamas in the street." :D

Ive accidentally gone out in my slippers. That's about it. Dont get the pajamas thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,485 ✭✭✭✭Khannie

I just don't get it. Frankly, if you're walking around the streets in your PJ's at 3 in the day I think it says a lot about you. It's _horribly_ unattractive.

Befoe if you had to dash to local shop for an emergency pint of milk or to the late night chemist none would take any notice thinking poor girl - must be an emergency but now that privilage has been taking away by these girls that seem to think it is a fashion statement to wear the altest penney.s pjs everywhere. No if you were in that situation poeple think you are one 'dem wans'

I never go out in my *acutal* pyjamas (would be done for indecent exposure) but I do have a sort of half-way getup that's between pyjamas and normal clothes! It's combats or tracksuit bottoms and tshirts and hoodies that I would never actually put on me when I get dressed to go anywhere or meet anyone, but I'd wear to nip down to the shops.

I hold my hands up to wearing my slippers outdoors though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,756 ✭✭✭Jules

Even if im popping outside the door for a second i pull on a pair of trackies or jeans and throw on a jumper or something, thats only if im going back to bed but if im out the door for more than 10 mins i just get dressed!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,072 ✭✭✭SeekUp

When I was in graduate school, I wouldn't think twice about it -- and, might I add, I must say that I was not the only one in our 8 a.m. Friday class wearing pajama pants, a hoodie, and carrying a travel mug of coffee.

I haven't really done it much since, although it wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility for me to run to the corner and grab a coffee whilst wearing pj pants and a hoodie.

There are times when I just couldn't care less about being horribly (un)attractive, tbh.

    that's proper order there.

BTW, you look like a Cop. YOu just have that look about you:D

My boyfriend will happily stroll to his local shop for the milk in the morning in an open dressing gown (he lost the belt), pj pants and slippers. Oh, and a bed head. Doesn't really bother me, but I doubt I'd do it myself!

When I was living in a student village it was commonplace to visit the neighbours in your PJs and uggs...

I've seen girls doing this so often recently, that I've just learned to accept it as the Norm. Was in my local Beauty Salon few weeks ago on a Sat afternoon when a lady popped in wearing her lovely bright pink pj's:eek: personally I wouldnt go round the streets with my PJ's on, however in saying that I got a late night call last Fri to pick my yonger sis up from our local Nite Club so I dashed to the car in my Pj's and picked her up.
If I had to run to our local corner shop for milk etc, I think i might venture out however that would be the height of it.

Wouldn't wear pjs out, but if I have to run down to the store or do some small errands and don't feel like putting on jeans, I'll wear my yoga pants out. They're comfortable!

Saw a girl in the city wearing those hideous all in one pyjama suits from penneys:eek: It was going on for 5 in the evening aswell.. personally I think it is ok if your popping to a small shop in the morning to grab some milk or something but its definately something I wouldn't do

Its scummy! I vote a camera phone contest.... Who can get the best "or worst" pic of the bunch! lol.

Makes ya wonder though...if these are the pyjamas they are ok to wear in public....i.e the good pair..... the bad "around the house" pajamas must be the filthiest crusty bean stain riddled yolks you would find!

they out in their pjs but yet still manage to look tangoed and have 2 inches of makeup slapped on :D

I can understand anyone thinking "what the ****" when they see this phenomenon but there is way too much attention paid to it and annoyance in relation to same. They're wearing clothes - let them off.

Off i went to the post office this morning to get stamps. There was a gaggle of girls out in there PJ's after signing onmI mean in all fairness they were going to get their dole they could have at least got dressed. They all had a full face of make up on them as well. So time for make up but not to change out of what you probably slept in? There was around seven of them and they still had their slippers on.

    Shelly, you minx!

I'd never wear pyjamas outside, regardless of what time of the day it was! Pyjamas are to be worn inside the house only. They are sleeping attire.

I used to head to my local Tesco in the evenings, anytime between 6 and 9. I'd often see girls in their pyjamas - slippers, pj bottoms with stars/cherries/cows/sheep/words on them and an oversized hoody.

Fair enough, if that's how you want to present yourself, but this was contrasted by a face full of make-up and perfectly done hair.

I just fail to see the point of it - if you're going to spend time doing your hair and make-up, why not put on suitable clothes to match? OR if you're going to be casual and wear your pyjamas, why not ditch the make-up and not bother with the straightener?

I wear mine in the garden some mornings. My washing machine has a timer so I set it to finish a cycle as I get up so if I'm feeling like slobbing about in the morning I go hang out the washing in my jammies and then make a coffee and settle in on the couch.

why would you do that??!! seriously!!
like you can really easily go out round to the shop with no makeup, hair tied back n tracksuit bottoms if your feeling lazy, nothing wrong with that!
but pjs are cosy indoor and bedtime wear, thats all!! you can only kinda get away with it if you are seriously sick and cant physically get dressed!
i mean if your gonna do that then you might as well accessorize with a kid and a **** attitude!
and i get made fun of for what i wear?! riiiiigggghhhtt!!

Think these posts sum it up. There is a certain social class of girls that do this. It reflects REALLY badly on your attitude towards yourself and to life in general IMO. Im not saying to put on make up, do your hair (and whatever else constitutes wimmins beauty regime these days :D ) but we've all done the throw on a hoody and jeans and walk to the shop on sunday morning routine. Takes less than a minute to do. I dont see how someone can walk around all day in what they were sleeping in.

It's not as if they have just woken up early, were late and ran out of the house in their pj's, they plan in wearing these out and have another set of pyjamas they sleep in later. I don't get in tbh.

I've only ever seen really common looking girls do it. It's a bit of a lower class thing from what I can see.

No idea if it's a low class thing, but as far as I'm concerned, I'd never go out wearing them. I always take a shower in the morning so I wear normal clothes afterwards. Moreover I wouldn't feel at ease with them on and people looking at me.

    Well, the garden is fine!
If it's in the grounds of your own home, that's ok.
But if you're leaving the house, if you're in public ... it's a bit weird to be in your pyjamas!

Jesus christ almighty, why do people get so upset about the fact that OMG IT'S SLEEPWEAR NOT DAYWEAR HOLY CRAP THESE GIRLS SHOULD BE SHOT!!

Maybe they just like how it looks. Sleepwear and an oversized hoodie can look cute. Not to mention it IS super comfortable.

Honestly, it seems like all the people freaking out about it are just looking for yet another reason to feel superior to everyone else (oh well I would NEVER do a thing like THAT, how low class of them!). Comes off as hugely pretentious.

It's not just a Dublin thing, either. It's a North American thing, too.

I don't dress like that, personally, I don't even own a pair of pjs. But that doesn't mean I look down on people who do. I have bigger things to worry about or be offended by than someone deciding they'd like to wear a pair of pj bottoms. Grow up, tbh.

Meh, can't really care what other people wear in the streets. Except if it's really standing out.

ah but its the fact that its the majority of these pj wearing people who have nothing better to do but hang round in there pjs and shout abuse at people who are actually dressed and going about their life because wow they dont have a kid at 20 n have a life!

It says a lot for the state of the country when this trend is being accepted as 'the norm'. What happened to standards? When I was a kid I wasn't even allowed out to the door in my nightclothes so I find this carry-on appalling. And yes, it is a lower class thing. You only have to go through areas like Ballymun or Ballybough to see these ones strolling around in their pyjamas. For God's sake girls, have a little self-respect and PUT SOME CLOTHES ON!

No it's not ok, anybody who does this looks ridiculous and stupid. I mean jees, put some effort in, it takes two minutes to actually put on some actual clothes. PJs are meant for BED, not outdoors.

Yes it's fine if you are wearing them while on the grounds of your home, but if you're actually going out in public then wear some proper clothes otherwise you look like a moron.

They have got clothes on. Just because you don't like them doesn't make it any more inappropriate. It's worse to see a girl going around in a belt of a miniskirt and a tube top imo, and those are considered "clothes." And it's not a lower class thing. In North America it's actually generally the upper middle classers who wear them.

Why are they made for bed and not outdoors? Because someone said so? Sure, trousers were made for men, but it's okay for women to wear them. Wasn't always that way. Things change, people wear what they want.

What's proper to you may be improper to someone else. A Muslim woman might look at you like you're a skeevy tramp because you're not completely head-to-toe covered.

I've never seen a gang of pj-wearing girls giving out abuse to anyone to be quite frank, but I suppose I've not spent much time in Dublin and the Canadian pj-wearing girls that I'm used to are probably a lot more pleasant anyway.

just 'cos you've never seen 'em doesnt mean it doesnt happen - try visit inner city Dublin around lunchtime - you'll be able to find a group of PJ Wearing gangs drinking - granted they probably wont dish out their abuse freely - first you have to give them a dirty look or make a comment on the PJs...but be warned - verbal and possibly physical abuse WILL follow (if heard/seen)

Well they are not clothes though. PYJAMAS ffs lol they are for sleeping in and for lazy hangover days inside!

And on the last point, head to ballymun, ballybought, tallaght, finglas, coolock etc and you will get plenty!

That's generally why they wear them imo. They want a confrontation and deliberately aim to draw negative attention to themselves in order to have an excuse to shout threateningly at the "stuck up" dressed people.

Saw 2 girls sauntering about the other day in onesies! One was bright pink, the other was blue.

While I used to think a onesie would be the ultimate in lazy lounge wear, I now realise you look like a spanner to everyone else.

But then, I'm one of those man backstards anyway, so maybe I'm missing something?

Jaysus you seriously think anyone's going to say they do now?

You lot have already repeatedly called them "low class," "grubby," "dirty," "spanners," "lazy," "ridiculous," "stupid," "morons," "common," and a myriad of other insults freely tossed out by people far too high up on those awful tall horses of theirs.

And all for wearing thin cotton trousers, god forbid!

You seem to have a slight mistake in your post "You lot" should be "Alot of people" because I for one never said anything negative about them.

But I do agree with you that if there was someone that did, they would probably not go near this thread after what has been said. But, that doesn't mean I still wouldn't like one some who does wear PJs outside to just say why they do it.

If they want to wear pyjamas, fair enough! I just find it ironic that they're wearing garments associated with chilling and down-time, whilst having perfectly done hair and make-up - that has clearly taken time and effort to do.

Liah, I think people have a problem with it because it's considered part of anti-social behaviour. It's against our social traditions to wear such items of clothing in public. People are equally as shocked by girls running around in hot pants, mini skirts and belly tops.

As much as Ireland is advancing, I still think we're quite traditional as a society. People are expected to conform to the norm, or they're looked at strangely.
