Biffy Clyro - Only Revolutions

thought i'd start a new thread rather than start talking about the album in the that golden rule thread.

    the tracklist has been finalised.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Only-Revolutions-Biffy-Clyro/dp/B002NX0LO2/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1252460113&sr=8-3

    01. The Captain
    02. That Golden Rule
    03. Bubbles
    04. God & Satan
    05. Born on a Horse
    06. Mountains
    07. Shock Shock
    08. Many of horror
    09. Booooom. Blast and Ruin
    10. Know your quarry
    11. Whorses
    12. Im probably in Your Pocket
    13. Cloud Of Stink
from concerts i've heard "the captain" (2005) and "i'm probably in your pocket" (2008).

the captain was played last night on Zane Lowe's show.

here's the version that i heard in 2005

can't help but feel they've tamed that riff, it's horrendous. This album is going to have the same feel as puzzle production and sound wise that polished feel it just doesn't suit biffy at all imo.

the lyrics are good though, they are a step up from puzzle, i know puzzle was a album that helped simon deal with his mothers death but it was completely non-metaphoric unlike their previous work. this seems to be a state of semi-simple lyrics but still has some good metaphors in it.

also Josh Homme (QOTSA) has guest appeared for the solo on the track bubbles.

I will always be anxious now of a biffy release since puzzle, their direction turned, so i won't say i'm 100% excited for this but it will be interesting to see how the other tracks weigh up both musically and lyrically.

God, that is AWFUL - sounds like the Magic Numbers at their worst meets Killers at their worst. Or some other horrendous concoction. BLEH

I actually like it quite a lot. I still prefer Help me become captain, but there's nothing we can do about that. If I want to listen to it I still have the old recordings. I'm extremely excited for the album even though I think I'll be a bit disappointed. Really want to hear proper recordings of Born on a Horse, I'm Probably... and God&Satan. I am liking their new direction. It's nice when bands shock their longterm fans. :)

I like that tune a lot.

November 9 for a release date though? Very ghey :(

hmmm very different. It'll prob take me a while to like it since im more into the guitar parts of Biffy. This seems quite poppy and brassy:rolleyes:

Aye I listened to that and watched the videos. Pity I can't watch The Captain video but it'll probably be on youtube soon. Si's such a legend. What a party trick. :)

the captain was played last night on Zane Lowe's show.

Just heard it on MySpace. It was fairly awful. Very Puzzle. 'Golden Rule' has a bit of promise, but this is not the same band that released Infinity Land.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,148 ✭✭✭punk_one82

It's a band who've progressed. If they were the same it would be quite boring...

Hey, just heard this band recently on a compilation my friend made for me. The track is Mountain(s) and i really like it. Any suggestions for which album to get 1st? or just wait for the new one?
    Cheers,
    Marky

Just get them all. :). If you're a mountains fan you'll probably be a puzzle fan. If you're a puzzle fan, you'll probably soon find yourself getting addicted to older Biffy. Be aware though, that older biffy is nothing like mountains...It is in fact far, far better and completly different.

Today, the book "Only Revolutions" that I ordered came in the mail...

I have to agree - I'm not liking the horrific (probably synthesized) brass sound. However, I really loved "That Golden Rule", so I'm prepared to wait and see what the album sounds like. Who knows... we may be pleasantly surprised.

I'd say it'll be very much like 'Mountains' in the sense that it will sound a hell of a lot better and less commercialised when they play it live with just guitar, bass and drums.

I agree. It's going to sound far far better live than on the record, and Vertigo of Bliss is a masterpiece. :)

only thing that impresses me based on the clips is bubbles.

yup it takes a while for them to add stuff to the Irish store for some god forsaken reason.

As a new Biffy fan.. wats the best album?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

tbh it depends on your music taste, every biffy album is so diverse it's hard to say which is the best album. for me though it would be this

    vertigo of bliss
    blackened sky
    infinity land
    puzzle

i think Only revolutions will fit in between infinity land and puzzle for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,658 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Liking the live version anyway. Now to find those 30 second previews.

Switch Blackened Sky and Infinity Land and I'm with you on that...vertigo of bliss really is the standout album though. In fact it's one of my favourite records by anyone.

Edit; just listened to 'the captain', it's absolutely awful. I thought when that golden rule came out things were on the up but this is puzzle but worse.

Vertigo of Bliss seems to be the consensus, though I prefer Infinity Land. Blackened Sky is probably the most accessible after Puzzle (an album I've never understood the criticism of.) Really looking forward to the new album. Both singles have been great imo.

i hope to **** they don't have the horns in dublin.

they ruin it live, as they totally over power the guitar, simon may as well not bothered putting on the guitar last night.

at least the lyrics are slightly better than puzzle, but everything else is the same unfortunately.

you'll see what the captain should be when it's released as a single, they have a b-side called "help me become captain" it was written just after infinity land and sounds ****ing immense.

I honestly thought it would be better live...I guess just the guitar mix could have been louder...he uses 4 amps ffs come on!
They played well anyway, i'd say after a few beers we'll enjoy it live :pac:

there's more coming on friday by the way on jools holland.

they recorded 3 more songs i think.

I saw Biffy live in Dolans in Limerick about this time 2 years ago. Put on one fantastic gig.

I still think Machines is one of the best songs of the past 2 - 3 years.

Yeah, help me become captain is a quality tune. They played it at the Temple bar music centre and Róisin Dubh around 4 years ago (incidentally the last time I saw them live) and it still sticks out. They've absolutely butchered the original though.

They played Captain, was a bit iffy. I don't just mean the song itself but it was really hard to hear Simon, the sound technician needs sacking. Played that golden rule as well which was just classic biffy, great to see.

Another track from Only Revolutions got its first play tonight on Zane Lowe's show, check it out.

Only listened to it once but I'm not feeling it.

They only showed the captain when I was watchin on tues. Yeah thats how the BBC mixes live recordings, kinda an ambient live sorta vibe they have goin on. Its like you're onstage listening to simons monitor. They always mix the festival highlights such as glasto like that too.

Hope someone uploads TGR to ytube from jools!:pac:

chorus reminds me of the conversation is... from puzzle
The new tracks on the album are also kinda like the marmaduke duke stuff..maybe he just threw the songs he wrote for MD and used them to fill the album :S

the captain that was played on friday was much better than the midweek one.

that golden rule sadly like all biffy now is 1000% better live than on record.

bubbles is a grower, the guitar riff in the chorus is so damn catchy and the josh homme solo is quite good too.

ha didnt realise they recorded it twice

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

    they didn't.

they recorded the captain and that golden rule before the live show on tuesday in which they played the captain.

the recorded versions are much better which is so unlike biffy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 503 ✭✭✭pistonsvox

They had time to mix it better now. Its gas for the live version they use the same camera angles and all

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,508 ✭✭✭ElaElaElano

Just checked Friday's post and this was waiting for me

    8224_150528686233_653676233_2792879_5288438_n.jpg

Really excited now, it's four years since I last saw biffy live. Manchester Orchestra are supporting as well who are a decent enough band so it should be a good'un.
