My family have a long and sometimes tricky history with the Guinness brewery. Several men on both sides have done their time in the great brewery, and my mam and dad both remember fresh bottles of stout coming into the house on many nights when they were children. Going back further, some relatives (Larkinites to the core!) never really forgave the company for their actions around the lockout period when some workers were let go for their strike-action, but it wasn't long before the economic-boycott was dropped (to say the least!)

Wherever I am, it always makes me think of Dublin, or more specifically, some of the characters of the city. A certain Myles na Gopaleen, a few hairier than average 'Dubliners', a Borstal Boy on the run and a few long gone relatives of my own always come to mind. I really hope all the hard working people who did their bit in that bewery over the years see their work marked this year, as I don't think there is more iconic instituion or symbol with regards the Dublin working class than that brewery.
