Getting Ready For A Night Out

Wonderful people of The Ladies' Lounge, how do you get ready for a night out?

What's your pre-going out regime? What "tunes" get you in the mood for going out - if any?

For me, I love having one or two friends over, blasting the best - and worst - of the 80s and getting ready (which involves straightening my hair and applying the war paint. I usually don't bother with things like painting my nails, I only have so much patience!)

Notable songs include ; Walk Like an Egyptian, Atomic and Give It Up! - I like cheese ;) I might even delve into the 90s with a bit of Backstreet Boys or Spice Girls! :D

I like having a few (nicely measured) homemade cocktails, before dancing about in my room, taking silly photos, then heading out.

We usually don't end up leaving my house much before 11, given that there's always last-minute outfit changes and cries of "Just one more drink before we go!"

Thinking about it made me realise that often, the best part of the night is actually getting ready to head out and having a few "quiet" drinks with your friends before you even hit the bars / clubs!

I'm the opposite Pika, it bugs the shlt out of me to spend hours getting ready only to sit in the house, make it into town for midnight, and come home again 2 hours later!

I like to be out and all before 10. Getting ready, I prefer to do on my own, cos I have *zero* patience for waiting for other people. That said, I'll have a nice long shower, have a glass of wine, music, then decide what to wear, do hair, makeup, get dressed and go!

Actually it's quite amusing to see the different girl rituals! One girl for example if say we're going out on a saturday will start to get ready at 2 o clock!

and if impromptu beers are planned she's always the last!

But it amazes me how girls always "need to know" what time they're going out at so they can get their routine ready :)

My "ritual" has changed over the years, but then I don't really go out on the town so much, I go for drinks with friends.

It's never taken me too long to get ready - 5-10 minutes for make-up, same for getting dressed. That's if I have had a call to meet in half an hour for a glass of wine.

If I have loads if time, I'll play some music on the ipod and have a glass of wine and spend a good...half hour?!

I could probably spend longer, but after 30 minutes you reach that critical point where things just aren't going to make you look any better :D

Surely guys also need to know what time they are going out so they can be on time?! :pac:

Although it makes little difference with me, I can only think of one female friend of mine who will actually turn up on time.

I'll have decided early in the day what i'm wearing. - this normally goes to plan but theres the odd night that i think of an outfit but then put it on and go "****!!...this is just not working for me tonight!!" and have to change a couple of times. (Nightmare)

But anyway, I'll either have had a shower that afternoon or not long before i'm heading out, prefer to have one earlier so i know i can let my hair dry naturally and it'll be 100% dry by that night.

I put on the music/Cd/Radio, pin back the fringe and start the war paint, but i only put on the Foundation, Powder and Blusher. Then i plug in the straightener or hair tongs and get going on the bottom half of the hair.

Turn off the hair-majigey, finish the face(Except Mascara - i Always put that on last) then finish the top and fron of my hair, Get dressed, Jewellery. Mascara. Pack the bag. Finish whatevers left of the drink(s), fly into the loo, brush my teeth and mouthwash, grab a key, and out the door. - seems much longer written down!!

None of my friend live near me anymore (All northside and Newcastle) so i miss having someone there to have a laugh with getting ready in our girly way....:(

I like to shower and then have a couple of the lads over for a few pre-beers while blaring "Hot Fuss" and singing along. :)

I love having a good hour, i find myself like dazed by the t.v or whatever (spesh now x factor is back) though i did break a land speed record and was in the pub a mere 30 mins after the txt :O)

Very rarely get to get ready "properly" for a night out since I started my part time job cos I work every weekend, usually until quite late. So usually it's just a quick change in the toilets, a bitta make up and off I go!

So when I get a chance I love love LOVE having loads of time to pamper myself! Usually have a nice hot shower first (hopefully with some lovely smelling potions and lotions!) then put on some pj's and get to work! Dry the hair (or mousse it if I'm going for wavy) Then pin it back and do the make up. I love having a friend over (not 2..it gets too hectic!) and belting out music because we get all hyper:) My friends are all great at eye make up so if ones there they do that for me and I'll do their hair! After make up unpin the hair and straighten it or whatever. Then I put on my outfit (which hopefully works :pac:) Slip on the heels, a spritz of perfume, finish the drink and I'm good to go!

not really, I mean if i get a call for pints, shower shave(maybe not) iron clothes out the door in 20 mins!

mines very similar to the first poster, cheesy music lol. and knowing what time i have to be ready by is a must :) then i book the taxi well in advance lol. otherwise u have to go and flag one :( makeup takes the longest, i take at least 45 minutes on that, hair is not too long though. having drinks in the house before goin out saves money so always do that, goin to the off license before going out to take cheap drinks first x

For the most part, I go out with lads mainly, so my going out routine goes like this:

Get home from college around 5, fix myself some dinner (cos mam doesnt have dinner til about half 6 usually) and have a shower while dinners in the oven

then i have my dinner, go upstairs, put on the radio and do my hair (which takes about half an hour to blow dry and straighten cos I have big, curly hair)

I pick out whatever I'm going to wear and do my make up and then get a lift up to Celbridge and get the bus up to maynooth around half 7.

then I drink in one of the lads' houses and hang out for a bit before heading out around ten, I don't drink in my house usually cos Mam's a bit weird still about me drinking in the house

On the rare occasion that I go out with a few of the girls, I usually get almost ready in my house, and then go to my best girl's house and she does my make up cos she's an makeup artist, few drinks in hers and then we meet everyone at the bar or whatever.

I love the pre-drinks part of the night, getting ready by myself followed by a few beers with the lads and then onto a pub is my ritual basically.

Oh and tunage whilst pre-drinking usually ends up being big-hair rock, Van Halen, Bon Jovi and The Who among others, although recently, we've taken to watching the Inbetweeners before we go out, total buzz kill..

My night usually goes a little something like this:

Me: Wow girls, ye look awesome! That's such a gorgeous top/skirt/dress/pair of shoes!
    Them(collectively): Why aren't you ready?!
Me: Oh, don't worry about that, I'll be ready in ten. Now, who's doing my hair? And my nails? Think my legs could do with a shave, someone do that while I do my make-up? Can someone fix me a drink?

    Ten minutes later...

Me: God girls, hurry up, taxi's here!
*shakes head at the length some people take to get ready*

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,739 ✭✭✭✭minidazzler

    Mines simple.

    ****e
    Shower
    Find clean clothes
Put on clean clothes stretch them a bit so I don't have to Iron them
    Smelly's
    Brush teeth
    Go to friends house
    Pre-drink.
    Head to the bus stop
Complain that buses take too long.
    Hit the Pub or Club.

    Easy as.

No need for a shave as well because I rarely do it, speeds everything up and ensures I don't cut myself!:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,316 ✭✭✭✭the_syco

before dancing about in my room, taking silly photos
    Uh-huh... :D

    =-=

I'm a dude, so I just do the SSS, put on clothes, empty about about a quater to a third of 7up from the bottle, fill with Southern Comfort, and head out. If I want to get psyched up (ie: have to wait for the rest of the group), I'd listen to Pantera/Judas Priest/Planet Rock @ 0110 on Sky Digi.

If it's a planned night out, I usually have a couple of friends staying in my house (I'm closest to town!) so they come over around nine-ish, completely ready to go, while I'm usually just out of the shower with wet hair and PJs on :D

We usually have a few glasses of wine in the house while I get ready, it takes me about fifteen minutes to do my make-up and I do my nails while someone else straightens my hair. We catch up on all the gossip, as we're mostly living in different counties these days, and we don't head into town til about 11 or 12.

I'd say in total, including shower etc, it takes me up to an hour and a half to get ready, but that's taking my time. I've often gotten ready for impromptu sessions in fifteen minutes or less.

Definitely agree that getting ready is one of the best bits of a night out. You never really get a chance to chat properly later on in the pub/club.

I have to get ready on my own, other people are distracting and noisy!

    Have shower
    Get drink
Sort out music - mostly metal that you can sing along to, so Pantera, Twisted Sister, Kiss, Alice in Chains, CoC, BLS etc and some Simple Minds
    Put in contacts
    Put on most makeup
    Do hair
    Get dressed
Do the rest of the makeup
Find boots, clean boots, wear boots
Put the rest of the drink in a small bottle

    Thats about it!

Assuming I already shaved that morning (Being a guy), it's as follows.

    Check boards.

Check watch. Realise I have another ten minutes before I need to be going.

    Check boards again.

    Check watch. Six minutes.

Go upstairs, consider changing clothes. Unless going formal, decide against. Clip on sidearm. If going formal (i.e. jeans and T-shirt unacceptable), change into slacks and shirt.

    Go downstairs. Check boards.

Check watch. One minute. Power down computer.

Check for wallet, mobile 'phone. If all present, go to car, leave.

I rarely stress over going out.

    NTM (Interloper)

I'm definitely with you on this. It usually only takes me a half hour at most to get ready. I generally wash my hair the day before as it behaves so much better on the second day. Means all I have to do is jump in the shower for a quick body wash, throw on whatever I've decided to wear, put the make up on (which takes roughly 5 mins), then I'm supposed to put the jewellery on but 99% of the time I forget and run out the door. Depending on my mood I might have a drink while getting ready

I also have no patience waiting for other people to get ready. Anytime I went on holidays with my friends I was always the last to jump into the shower cos the other two would always take longer. Even though I was the last in the shower I was always ready long before them. It used to get on my nerves. I could never figure out what took them so long to get ready.

I love this ritual - and for some reason, moreso in the winter. I usually put on 2FM which plays old-skool dance music on Saturday evenings.
I spend forever on my eye make-up but everything else is fairly fast - I don't wear fake tan, barely wear foundation (if at all) and don't straighten my hair and don't do anything with it other than leave it down. I decide on an outfit while I'm in the shower/doing the after-shower moisturising.
All in all, about an hour max - not quick I suppose, but some women take two or three hours.

i find the longer i give myself to get ready the longer it takes me. if i start getting ready at 6 ill still be fixing myself at 9, if i start getting ready at 8 i can be done by 8.30!

usually get ready at home on my own
    - shower can take 5 mins or 20mins depending on if i need to do some hair removal!
    - if im straightening my hair it takes forever, drying then straightening, 20-30mins. if im lazy ill throw a load of mousse in it & let it curl naturally = 2mins
    - if its a big night & have to do things like paint my toe nails add on at least 20mins
    - makeup: can do a quick foundation, light eyemakeup, & blusher in 5 mins. do to fancy eyes takes me another 5-10mins

basically, if you let me ill take aaaaaaaages, if i need to i can be superquick :)

usually all done to whatever the latest chart stuff is :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,953 ✭✭✭Vinta81

Usually alone or my best mate comes over. Usually we get into town for 9.30 so I start getting ready about 7.30/8ish.

    If alone though;

    7.30 - shower - long, shave everything
then I do my tan (hellooo sally hansen you life saver you) pin my hair back and do my make up, then I dry my hair and i generally just leave it down and flowy, re apply any bits of missed tan - get dressed, get my clutch sorted (id, mini purse, lipgloss etc) look over make up, shoesies on and i walk into town with one of the lads then or we get a lift.

All the while I've got either a bottle of "Black Tower" or some copacabana and coke going, a playlist of 80s fun, Britney Britney Britney and a bit of current trashy chart stuff blaring and have an ole boogie in my room :D

I've been out with a family of my female cousins where we didn't leave the house until 11pm, even though the pub closed at half twelve.

I don't really have a going out ritual, though like a lot of people here, I do listen to upbeat music after showering as I'm putting on my ill-fitting garments of clothing. All that jollity proves useless, however, when I examine myself in the mirror before leaving the house. That's when I realize that my preening is a sham. :(

Don't drink before I leave the house either, couldn't be arsed walk to few hundred yards to the nearest Supervalu.

Takes me about half an hour to get ready.

Mostly because I have very few going out clothes so it doesn't take me very long to decide what to wear :(

When i used to live in town, I'd have a glass of wine and dance about the house with my housemate while getting ready, but now I'm back at home, it's literally try and grab the shower, dry hair and let moisturiser dry in, then get dressed, straighten hair, makeup, final hair straighten(always needs a few goes!) and then brush teeth, find bag and keys etc...

I will admit I usually plan ahead with what I'm wearing and do check boards while getting ready..

Music wise, can't have it too loud (kids asleep in house) but generally whatever is on my itunes playlist or Paul McCloone on Today FM...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,796 ✭✭✭MJOR

Righto.... Despite every photo i have ever posted of me here is without make up I do wear it. I always choose my dress in advance

It starts with tan the night before and a shower that morning. A conditioning treatment goes in and a second layer of tan.

fast forward to that night......a shower and a blow dry and straighten damn them curls:D there is wine and nibbles and a few of the ladies. I do their eye make up and we listen to 80's stuff. We head out by ten at the latest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,691 ✭✭✭Lia_lia

Ha! Takes me about 15 minutes.

    My "ritual" is usually:

    - Walk home/get a lift home from work at about 11pm
    - Put a little bit more make-up on.
    - Maybe straighten hair if looks bad.
    - Change clothes
    - Go back into town.

Or else I just go out in my work clothes.

If I'm not working that night it's usually the same thing. I never have a shower because I shower every morning anyway. Never really get ready at other peoples houses. Don't wear tan. Or very much make-up. Or shave my legs. Might as well be a boy!

The male Triple S ritual, get dressed and grab some food and about half pint of water. Then its grab some smelly stuff and out the door i go:D

See how easy it is for blokes? i was off to a wedding the other day, i was waiting 3 hrs for the girls to get ready sitting on my ar$e watching the simpsons:pac:

Totally agree! Getting ready is the best bit by far! I'm pretty much the same as you!

I shower, walk around in a towel for a good long while thinking about what to wear! My hair only takes two seconds, but I love doing my make up! I have a few drinks and my getting ready for a good night out song is Rhythm is a Dancer hahaha.

Alternatively, I'll get out of work at some horrendous hour, spend ten minutes in McDonalds Ladies fixing my face, down some sort of drink and head out! God, I'm ashamed of that actually!!!! :o

I like heading out early so usually its a pretty quick getting ready for me.
But every now and again its great to have a gang over and spend ages getting ready. Though this is usually a disaster for me as I always forget to start putting on my makeup till im already really tipsy and then I put eyeshadow and mascara everywhere :pac:

This is true. One of my good friends needs hours to get ready - and it rubs off on me, if I'm with her.
We'll know a week in advance that we're heading out at say, 9 on Saturday night.
We'll plan to get ready at 7 and be ready by quarter to 9.
On the day, the plan will completely go to the dogs!

Que one of us frantically washing our hair, at 8:30, while the other one tries to cook pizza in the oven, while painting her nails and waiting for the straightener to heat up!
We spend hours talking, then realise "Crap, we're waaay off schedule!"

On average, she'll be an hour late. Despite my shouting. or hair pulling! ;)

There's been occasions where we've actually had to run for the last bus!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,469 ✭✭✭Pythia

I'd already have my tan done from the night before. Would generally give myself about 3 hours to get ready, so I can go at a leisurely pace and eat/go on online/whatever as well.

Shower and hair washed, make up, dry and style hair. I'd say the hair could take half an hour as it's very long and up to an hour on make up. Might paint nails if I'm in the mood. Generally I don't spend too long on outfit choices.

I like to listen to dance music (a lot of 90's or early 2000's) but any pop music would do.

Since I don't really drink, I'll often get ready early enough and get there early and go home before people get insanely drunk.

Look at myself in a mirror to make sure there's no obvious stains on clothes. If it's a birthday or anything, or if I'm going to a fancy club I might put on a shirt.

    Brush teeth / spray deodorant.

    Put on coat.

    Leave house.

    Being male is so easy.

If its a weeknight I go straight from work so just top up the makeup, change and go.

But if its weekend night out out then:
Shower 30/40 mins (yeah I know:o, but I love the shower. Its my treat to me (and to ESB:D)
    Dry hair 10/15 mins.
Make up anything from 20 mins to an hour, with a glass of wine and cheesy music:).
    Straighten hair 30 mins.

I LOVE getting ready to go out, its nearly the best part:D:D.

God writing the above made me realise that I haven't done that in ages. Must rectify that:D.

Do the whole shower and shaving of legs/arms shennanigans.
Wander around in a towel for a while, figure out what to wear. Moisturise.
    Get dressed.
Throw on some make up, especially eye make up, I love it.
Then do the hair, all of which whilst drinking wine.
I listen to Pendulum and Calvin Harris, that kinda thing that makes me wanna groove, ooooh and the Bloody Beatroots! [:

I shower, brush teeth and put on clothes and make-up. It takes about half an hour.

Sometimes I dry my hair, but often just dry the front bit and tie the rest back... Well it looks the same!

That'd be moisturise, coat of base mascara, wait for both to dry, another coat of base mascara, primer, foundation, powder, bronzer, blusher, highlighter, eyebrow pencil, brow bone highlight, 2 or 3 eyeshadows applied in a specific way and blended, eyeliner, mascara, lipstick, lipgloss, another coat of mascara, blend neck into jaw line. There's also mistake correction (specifically when using mascara). All this would be done fairly slowly so yeah, an hour.

    ^ Fair play.

Keep meaning to go some kinda make-up application workshop type thing. Never had much interest in make-up because I usually f*ck it up really.

    Confirm Babysitter
    Drop off child
Dash home and into shower for about ten mins
Dry off, spend two mins applying the barest bit of fake tan
    5 mins to dry hair
    2 mins to get dressed
5 mins on make-up - hint of foundation, mascara, little bronzer and lipgloss
Pour a large vodka and diet coke
    Sit down and breathe out
    Light a cigarette
    Call cab

    Shower (and shave legs)
    Tan/Moisturise
    Start Make Up
    Dry+ straighten/put waves in hair
Touch up on the make up and put on more mascara+lip gloss
(all done while having a glass or two of vino)
    Put on outfit
Make sure everything is in the bag (I have a checklist...id,phone, wallet, keys, lip gloss, powder and other other bit of make up)
If im kind of allergic to going out ill listen to something really upbeat like The Black Eyed Peas new album or something like that, if im all up for the night out ill listen to anything!:p

Oh and the last thing to do before I leave is put on the shoes....save the feet for as long as possible!!

I leave whatever shoes I am wearing that night jsut inside the door, and put them on when taxi arrives, they are found just inside the door next morning too as I take them off the minute I get in.

Look at myself in a mirror to make sure there's no obvious stains on clothes.

    Shower and do my hair
    Apply make up
    Pick an outfit
    Go

I'm not into taking hours to get ready and chatting with the girls. Dull. If I'm going out, I want to get there and have fun!
