Jumping Around: Acceptable Tactic or Cheap Move?

This is in response to a thread on the xbox forum regarding acceptable tactics for a noob. One poster suggested Bunny hopping jumping around, which I responded to as being frowned upon. To which someone replied "Frowned on by who" I've always witnessed abuse of a player that's used it. Personally I hate bunny hopping jumping around. For me, there's nothing worse than seeing bunch of players bouncing around like they're played Halo. So given the question I'd like to gauge the depth of feeling here.

Do you approve/disapprove of Bunny Hopping in COD 40 votes

Approve: It's perfectly acceptable valid tactic.

    Disapprove: It's an unacceptable tactic.

I dont like it when people do it no but sometimes I find myself jumping around a corner etc just from reflexes the odd time.

To me I dont think its a noob move exactly. The person the hopper is trying to shoot should be able to easily recognise the predetermined path where the jumper is flying through the air and where hes going to land. So if you have any sort of good aim you should be able to pick him off most of the time. This is on the pc now with a mouse. I dont think it would be as easy on the console. Also the only real way the jumper has a chance is if he surprises you in which case you deserve to die anyhow. As most of the game is about knowing where your enemy is around and being ready for him.

Its not that its a n00b move its more a sign of a bad gamer, and any decent player will quickly dispatch hoppers. I aint played COD in a while but can you shoot while jumping? they got rid of that in BF2 making hopping pointless really

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,559 ✭✭✭LD 50

Yea, you can shoot and jump at the same time. I don't use it very often, just the odd time. I don't mind others that use to sparingly, but all the time would piss me off. Its fairly annoying though when your sniping, and an enemy randomly jumps over your shot though.

Jesus H Christ, the whiners are out in force again. Let me just say this:

    BUNNYHOPPING IS IMPOSSIBLE IN COD4

It cannot be done, end of story.

Thanks Kami! I voted "Approve: It's perfectly acceptable valid tactic" because it's impossible to bunny-hop in CoD4!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,918 ✭✭✭Steffano2002

is it not just jumping about?
No. It's doing jump after jump after jump after jump. If you try to jump twice in quick succession in CoD4 you'll find that you're not actually going anywhere fast on the second jump!

I believe it was actually possible to bunny-hop in CoD1 when it first came out but so many people complained about it that IW implemented an "anti bunny-hop" (in a patch) that has been in CoD games ever since.

going prone suddenly or "drop shotting" someone is the only slightly cheap move in cod because its just taking advantage of being invincible during any sort of annimation such as throwing a grenade or hoping a fence. still, dont hate the player, hate the game. :P

that is clearly 3 things then :

    1. a l2p issue
    2. get reactions
    3. get aim

I only hop to take potshots at someone who is beyond a wall that's slightly too high. It's a funny way of killing people.

On the consoles (PS3 for sure) you do see a lot of people jumping up and down as soon as you try to shoot them and that counts as bunnyhopping in my view. They may not be travelling around the map much but they are trying to take advantage of changes in animation to avoid being hit.

Noooo they are just jumping, that's not even close to what bunnyhopping is. You know you can aim up and down as well as left and right you know?

I did say 'in my view' right, you know? :p;) Just because you can't actually bunnyhop in COD does not mean you don't have idiots attempting it ;)

It kinda does... they are trying to avoid getting shot, not trying to repeatedly strafe jump in order to increase their speed.

I noticed that. It usually means they have no idea where you are, makes it all the more sweeter when you kill them. It's pointless on COD4, it just doesn't work. I think it's just panic, and people mash the keypad

And that's bunny-hopping in CSS (and this is exactly what is impossible in CoD):

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ea0ByYCPWOA

Jumping to avoid being hit is a "normal" / "natural" reaction AFAIC. I do it all the time! If I didn't I die 50% more IMO... And yes, it's perfectly acceptable.

Exactly, I've been banned from a ridiculous number of public servers for "bunnyhopping". When in reality all I did was jump around a corner shooting when I knew an enemy was there

Amazing! The number of people who give out about truly legitimate game perks such as juggernaut or the n00b tube and yet think jumping around is legitimate.

I'm saying that constantly jumping up and down to avoid being hit is stupid and that those who do this and then give out about legitimate game perks are the ones who should burn their consoles/PCs.

Riddle me this so, why have all the promods of CoD4 removed the nooby perks but left in the noobiest of moves jumping?

Because promods are like all archaic bodies, they can't get used to change. They are afraid of change because they might be shown up as gamers who can't actually adapt to new challenges. I've no time for promods at all really so it's an arguement that holds no water with me. Simples! ;)

    For the pedantic...

The poll is about people who constantly jump to avoid being killed. The fact that it isn't the textbook definition of bunny hopping ala CS is irrelevant.

Theres a difference between pedantic difference and completely wrong. And bunnyhopping isn't just in CS, its in the Unreal series, the Quake series, the HL1 and Source engines and tbh most FPS games.

I don't do it and it can be annoying, but at the same time I don't mind it as a tactic. I haven't come across it often to be fair.

Juggernaut and Noobtube are things in the game which obviously give a big advantage to the player using them and are nearly unsportsman like in a way, they just promote a fake image where the player with the most kills at the end has the most skill, instead of making that player think about how he could get better and become a more skilled player. I could be the best player in the world but still get hit with a noobtube from half way across the map from some player who just started playing fps games.

When it comes down to jumping while shooting etc everyone can do it, its an equal fight, unlike the juggernaut and noobtube, and the advantage is that it makes you harder to hit which in every other fps game ive played to date is one of the main principles of the genre and obviously the right thing to do if you want to stay alive and is probably the second most needed skill in fps gaming you need after aim. It just so happens in this game instead of strafing side to side or strafe jumping which you cant really do properly in this game due to mechanics, your only real option is to jump. Which is nothing different apart from using a different axis. It all comes down to skill in the end imo.

Also on promods, there made to equal up the playing field so there is no advantage on either side unlike the vanilla games which are full of perks/kill streak rewards etc that dont require skill or tactics to be able to win the game. A person getting dozens of kills from his noobtube before the enemy even knows about it across the map is not going to switch and try different tactics as hes getting alot of easy kills. Hes the one not adapting to challenges.

I stopped there :) Promods are the most vanilla of all games, same crap for every single player. It's boring and old. Each perk requires a different skill to be able to use it effectively. It's not all about number of kills either, you only have to look at the number of deaths and the kill:death ratio to get a real idea of the skill of the player. This is why promod is sooo boring.

'Promod' & 'Vanilla' are polar opposites of each either, are you being deliberately thick or something? If the vanilla game was decent there would be no need for a promod.

Ha ha :D Look mate, it's time we stopped, you and I are polar opposites and while you may be on the majority side of current thinking, I happen to think you are wrong so I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. Nothing you can ever do or say will change my mind and nothing I ever say or do will ever convince you that you are the one who is 'wrong'. :) So, I'm ending my participation here because it seems to be getting to you what with the 'deliberately thick' comments. If it's getting even more personal then I'm out. :)

Edit: If you want to continue by PM, the invite is there but I really don't think either of us will ever come close to agreement on this one :)

When I said vanilla I meant the "original unmodied game version" of the word. It had nothing to do with boring and bland or whatever way you may have taking it.

And tbh I dont think any perks require any skill to use effectively there all common sense on how to use and there is no real way to get better at using perks. Just look at the descriptions nearly all are obviously catered for players looking for either easy kills, an easy big kill count, players who cant aim with a normal gun and require other methods to kill or a get out of jail free card perk. Dont get me wrong I love vanilla CoD, though some perks and other mechanics the game could definetily do without, the perks however noob friendly they are are still fine for a casual game every now and again and the gamers out there that prefer that sort of thing. But when it comes down to the argument of how jumping in the game is unfair and it makes it harder to hit people its not casual anymore, now there thinking competitively. Perks do nothing but make one side have the advantage from the beginning and make it unbalanced. To really see who is the better player the two players must start off the same on equal terms as seen in many if not all big competitive games these days.

Most people (who voted) in the last election, voted for Fianna Fail (yes, Fail), and they're wrong...

But on topic, if the engine allows it, and the server doesn't have a rule against it, it's fine, imo.

I have a PS3 and COD4 about 4 weeks. So after reading up on it here and a few guides on gamefaqs, everyone hates:
    • People who use grenade launchers
    • People who camp
    • Snipers
    • People who jump to avoid getting hit
    • Sitting in one corner for 30 minutes with "UAV Fagger and Dead Gayness"
    • Using juggernaut
    • Using Marterdom

What the hell are you supposed to do?!
I'm going to start equiping a grenade launcher to piss people off

It's ridiclious. I mean you start out and have about 3 shíte guns and a choice of about 4 perks and it takes ages to unlock everything. People are running around shooting you with a P90 with ACOGS, perks I can only dream of and they know every level backwards cos they played 3000 hours on it! I'm stuck with an m16 that fires 3 shots bursts. But i'm the one "cheating" because I have juggernaut and a "n00btube"!

The m16 is widely regarded as the most powerful and best gun in the game. In game battles matches all you ever see is m16 or mp5 and you start off with both of them guns.
Either you cannot aim or you are just plain terrible at the game.

M4 and AK47 are both better than the M16, and the AK74 is pretty kick ass as well.

Never played on PS3 , but PC

Camping is fine .just as long as ur not scoped in on a spawn point.

Noobtube , is lame but mostly ineffective.Move quicker the guy will die. Don't think I have ever seen noobtuber win a FFA round.

Bunny hopping........Hopping around a corner to get a kill is a Bunnyhopping. this is weak, if you know the guy is around the corner hopping isnt required just step round a kill him.Crap players Us this tactic.

Marty is just the most annoying , Punishing someone cause you weren't good enough .come on

Laststand . Fine don't care usually leave these ppl to lie around and die. or shoot them in the head.
