Was out at eight this morning. Didn't think the rain was going to let up. Saw loads of fresh tracks leading up the hill when I got there. Gonna head up at 6 tomorrow morning to see can I get them before they stop grazing. Saw 3 hinds up on the top no sign of any stags yet.

I got myself a nice prickett out in Kerry....Was pissing rain all morning so considering the weather I was well pleased..After stalking a good 4-5 miles of wood land getting drownded this little lad showed his head around 400 yrds away from the car on the way back...Took him at 30 yrds.

Got picked up at 5am headed off to Kerry. Rain was awful. Stepped into a bog up to my thighs at about 7.30am. Dried off & changed.

    So morning = disaster..... :D

Afternoon, after frying up a breakfast on an outdoor stove, saw six female Sika & one female Red. Visited several spots but only females seen. Sat in a high chair for three hours at 5pm & saw nothing heard the bucks whistling but no show.

    To be had another day......

Afternoon/evening = ok..... but no cigar....

That's what the buddy was saying but we both heard them from different locations at the same let.

PS: Nice shot there Dwight (and the same to all others who felled a deer yesterday). My next outing will probably be saturday morning or evening.

Ialways thought it was the does that whistles mainly in alarm or calling the young
what type of whistle do you use

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,612 ✭✭✭jwshooter

you would be getting the odd whistle form the end of aug .

i watched a mature stag minding hinds wed eve ,its gone colder in the last few nites so that will bring on the rut.

the big groups of stags are starting to spilt up now and move in with the hinds .

    This weather is a disaster.....

Went out Sunday evening, very light drizzle & watched a nice young hind munching away on the grass from my hide.

Went out yesterday evening to the same place & nothing moving, heavy drizzle. But I did see something that made me smile..... A red squirrel darted across the path on my way back to the car.

Roll on this evening, weather is supposed to be improving from this afternoon, in Cork anyway (but I won't hold my breath).....

Still no sign of any staggies where I shoot in wicklow just hinds. Gonna head out again tomorrow morning at half five or so to see can I get a pricket, weather is suposes to be good for a few days. nice high pressure overhead tomorrow. . Haven't heard any whistles yet either. Got two vixens out of three that were just statring on a sheep they had just taken down. Is this unusual for three fox's to take down what looked to be a healthy sheep. Have pics if anyones interested?

just on foxes hunting in packs i have seen 2 adult foxes hunting lambs in wicklow last year in april a ewe had twin lambs the vixen drew the ewe away and the dog fox took one of the lambs nothing the ewe could do but stay with the one lamb was left i shot both foxes shortly afterwards the had taken 10 to 12 lambs on the one farm it happens from time to time

granted there is no hard and fast rules when it comes to wild life.

foxes taking a lamb is one thing but killing a mature sheep is another.

yes i agree on that strange one i middle of winter killing a old or dying ewe is one thing but this time of year could have a sheep shooter in the area ?
