    Are you a student?

Cant really see that working.. You'd have to cancel your current subscription and hope that they would let you sign up again

    Yes,yes and yes...

If you want to see how "great" 3's broadband is just have a look at this :

Three Mobile Broadband -THE PROBLEMS M-M-MEGATHREAD!

almost 7,000 replies is a pretty good indication to the crap service 3 provide.

O2 is cheaper with the student deal and much better from what I've read

does anyone know what speed this is at?

I've checked on the o2 website and the modem they are offering with the student deal is the cheaper one.. do you think that matters?

This page shows the modem details. It's the E 1752

Yea it is a good offer - it has been on for over a year though - but they're advertising it again because it is the back to college season. I works quite well.

Do they take a copy of your student id? Or do you just show it to them and they take your details?

They usually photocopy your Driving Licence/ Passport or whatever when you're signing up to any bill, so I'd imagine they'll probably photocopy your student ID also.

Would any one be able to tell me it says ***All O2 Broadband Plans have a data usage limit and a charge of 2c per MB applies for all usage in excess of the data usage limit on your plan.*** the monthly allowance is 10GB.

I am online for 4 to 5 hours most days mostly on here and facebook dont watch movies online or do much gaming. What are the chances of going over this allowance??? Is this a big amount i have no idea.

thanks and sorry if its a silly question

If you dont watch videos or listen to music or download torrents then I doubt you would go over a 10 GB limit or even come that close to the limit.

live streaming or youtube will eat up that 10gb allowance quickly....

watching 10 youtube videos is like downloading 10 songs...

but if you're just browsing and posting on forums, sending emails etc... there's nothing to worry about :)

Do you have to be an O2(phone) customer to get this? Cos I might get it if the house doesn't have broadband.

You migt not be able to. After you buy the modem you have 14 days to return it. After this you'll be in a 12 month contract with 3.

just an aside, this is available to education staff as well as students...not sure about 2nd level but maybe your teacher friends could get it.

You have to with a HEANET institute, they are listed on the site, they are all third level I think?

As said above it's only with HEANET bodies - all listed on their site.

2nd level not included but staff/faculty from the selected 3rd level institutions are included.

I took up on this offer in January, back then it was €13 a month which is still brilliant! €9.99 even better now!

I have to say it's a great service. I was living in an apartment in Dublin kinda half way below ground and I always had a decent signal and decent speeds. It was grand for streaming video and music.

I never once broke the 10GB limit and some months I'd even leave a few torrents downloading overnight to make use of what was available. This is after using it for browsing every evening so the limit is generous enough.

I wouldn't worry about the modem, I have the E220 dongle which is the one with the short USB cable and the modem hanging off it. One of the most basic...

I've moved back home now and I've 2 months left on the contract so I'm going to try cancel it... hopefully they'll let me.

karma403 - just bring it back and say it's no good in your area/apartment. You have a certain period of time to check if you get a good enough signal.

They will, you'll have to pay the remaining €26 either way though. Better off waiting till the contract's up or you'll have problems if you ever wanna start another one down the line.

Just though Id revive this post as I here O2 and the HEA are going to be offering this deal again for the 10/11 academic year.
I signed up last year on a 12 month contact at €9.99 for 10gb per month. In February I went over by ~3gb. I was unable to pay, my account was suspended and O2 came after me for the amount of €225 for one month!? Thats €215 for 3gb!?!? A couple of months later I discovered that O2 Telifonica had passed my account on to a debt collecting agency!?
While I understand that I signed a contact and that my credit rating will be effected if I don't pay, I really don't think this is fair considering that most other companies will wave a first time offense like this. As a graduate of a degree in applied physics and a postgrad in software development I understand how these systems work on a hardware level and I can see no justification for such a charge.
So in short, ya it seems like a good deal but don't dare go over your limit and don't expect any sympathy form O2 if you do.

I hope you didn't pay it. Too many people get bullied by big corporations and banks these days.

Hang on a minute, he signed a contract (which is a legally enforceable document), refused to pay a bill and now you think he's in the right?

Thats bad advice full stop. If you read the T&Cs of the contract you'll see that it says you must pay X amount for the GBs you use over your monthly limit. If oneofakind wasn't prepared to do that then why sign the contract?

Oneofakind32 I'd advise you to pay up and pay up quick. If you want you'll 'get away' with not paying the bill. this is purely because its not worth their while finanacially to pursue you for 225 quid through the courts- they'll send out nasty letters but its unlikely they'll get the sherriff's office out to confiscate 225 quids worth of your current possessions. (they are within their rights to do this though if they choose. But more likely is that a debt collection agency has paid O2 for your debt and if you don't pay it then they'll be out of pocket. They won't be too impressed about this are they are a business like any other. So if you don't pay up they'll hit you another way- report you to the Irish Credit Bureau and get a black mark put against your name. Every bank in the country uses the ICB and if you are on their blacklist then you will find it hard to get a loan/mortgage from a bank in this country. You're a student so probably don't want to buy a house now but you may well do in the future.

You should ring the deby collectors- there might be some room for negiotation if they think you'll pay.

    Hi,

I''m not sure if the Bargain Alert forum is the right forum to discuss this matter, but everyone else seems to be wading in with their opinions, so I might as well join in!

In relation to excessive charges being charged by O2 for going over the 10GB limit, this issue is not cut and dried.

Although the customer signs a contract it is a one sided contract, i.e. the customer has no opportunity to influence the terms. In other words the two parties are not on an equal footing.

In cases of unfair conditions in standard consumer contracts it is possible for such terms to be set aside by the courts. It is arguable whether the charges for going over the limit are unfair in this context.

It seems that O2 charge about €10 for 10GB and then charge, (based on a previous post), about €700 for the next 10GB! This does seem particularly excessive to me, especially in circumstances where the extra data does not actually cost the company much if anything at all.

I believe the original offer if you don't go over the limit is very good. However, the excessive charges for going over the limit are sneaky and extremely excessive.

    Smokey

It may look like your saving 120 but if you ever go over the 10gb allowance with 02 and used the 15gb you have with 3 you'll just have lost 300, 10gb is a small allowance and very easy use up if you use the Internet.

If the 15gb is not enough you can get 30gb for 26 euro, you can also ask 3 to 0 your credit limit so when your allowance is used up the Internet will just stop working until your allowance is refreshed, that way you won't get any big bill.

I'm not sure if 02 will allow you to 0 your credit limit, someone should ask them though.

You just have to be extremely careful if you opt for the student O2 offer.

If you have 10gb to use over 30 days, that's 10,000mb, so only use 333.32mb a day and you'll be fine. My internet stays on for a lot of the day everyday and it get's up to about 247mb. But that's just me browsing the internet.

I watched a programme on 4od yesterday and it went up to 440mb, so you've got to be careful with anything like that or downloading anything.

    http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/pricewatch/2010/0510/1224270042034.html

"From March of this year new rules to protect consumers from “bill shocks” came into force. Mobile operators must have a cut-off mechanism which will cut mobile connection to the internet when the bill reaches a specified limit. Operators must offer their customers a monthly cut-off limit of €50. They can also offer customers any other limit but if the customers chooses a higher limit, at least they’ll know what they’re letting themselves in for. People who do not make a choice by the beginning of July will have the cut-off limit set at €50 by default."

I have started to pay of the debt in installments. I am very unhappy with the way O2 dealt with this and even more unhappy with the HEAnet for approving such a Deal.
When I was first informed of the charge and asked for details of my usage, I was told I'd have to ring customer service. I received more calls from the collections branch of O2 and every time I asked for more details I was fobbed off onto customer service. A friend of mien had a similar problem with meteor and had the charges waved when he made a complaint to customer service. When the account was past to the debt collecting agency I finally contacted O2 customer service and requested a detailed bill.
O2 did not give any warning when I went over my limit.
O2 have yet to provide me with a detailed bill that I have requested.
O2 showed absolutely no leniency towards students when perusing payment for this made up charge
I wont be dealing with O2 ever again

I had this offer. Never looked at my account during the period I had the Direct debit, to my detriment. Was only ever charged the €9.99 twice in 9 months. Apparently in months i remember downloading a lot i had gone over by a gb or two, fair enough. In the last two months before I canceled the contract and DD, I was charged €120 each month. Now if I had been anywhere near using my laptop enough or knew someone had used it I would have accepted it, but the fact I hadn't been using the internet more than an hour or two a week and wasn't downloading anything yet their records said I had been overusing my internet really annoyed me. I was credited €40 to my account but after €240 had been taken out then it made sense to pay the €30 to cancel the contract.

Its a good deal on the surface but to anyone getting this or thinking of getting it, then monitor your usage as often as daily but I still suspect there is a problem in there systems that led to being overcharged for data that was never used.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,924 ✭✭✭✭RolandIRL

you can track your usage with this link - https://www.o2online.ie/NASApp/MyAccount/PostpaidUnbilledInclusiveUnitsServlet.htm

i think it's a good offer provided you never go over your limit. i download a good bit but i check my usage regularly and always ensure that i never go over. if i'm anywhere near it, i put away the modem and use the college bb instead.

If you are a student, YES.

But, you have to go into a store and show Valid Student ID. They input your student number before changing the tariff. I used to be paying over 20euro a month for mine, saw the deal and went to the O2 Forums. They did everything for me on the forums (They're a great bunch on there) but had to bring student ID into a store before the new tariff was activated

Folks just be careful, if you exceed the 10GB on this plan it's the standard charge for ex-bundle data that seems to be being applied, i.e. 2c per KB.

If you sign a legally binding contract and are billed at that rate, you have no legal recourse. You sign your own money away by exceeding the limit and shouldn't expect it to be waved either. It's silly to go over it, so don't.

    o2 website says:
The HEAnet plans have data usage limits of 5GB per month on the HEAnet €12.99 Price Plan and 10GB per month on the HEAnet €9.99 Price Plan. A charge of 2c per MB applies for all usage in excess of the data usage limit on your plan.

So it looks like they changed the t&cs this year :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,924 ✭✭✭✭RolandIRL

afaik it is 2c per MB over your limit with o2 while with the other mobile bb operators, it's 2c per KB  that's over a 1000 times dearer if you go over your limit

not to burst your bubble, but i think you have to get the modem in the deal as well. my brother already had a modem but i had to pay for a new modem when i was taking up his bb. the guy said the deal wouldn't go through for him otherwise.
