Indeed he was, did great work behind the scenes, and a good friend of Ireland.

Sorry to hear of his demise.

    RIP Senator Edward Kennedy.

A man who really love politics and worked tirelessly for the good of his state and country.

He even managed to garner the favour of the most right wing Republicans in American politics - not an easy feat.

As others have said, a good friend to Ireland too.

All sorts of stuff is going to come out now, we may even find out who killed Mary Jo Kopechne and just how close he was to the rape of a young woman...

Unlike his two brothers who got shot by other people, he managed to shoot himself in the foot a couple of times, so never made as much progress up the US political ladder.:(

what make Ted Kennedy so special?

He was a friend to Ireland constantly.
He continued to try and see a maintaining high number of visas issued to Irish youth.
He fought for a general amnesty for Irish people working in the states after their visa's ran out out or their status changed.

One way or another he had a kind heart for the Irish people.

    RIP

    - Off the top of my head two reasons; he founded the Congressional Friends of Ireland and fought hard for citizenship for the illegal Irish emigrants in the U.S.

He did more for Ireland than the people you mentioned.

    R.I.P. Mr. Kennedy.

    TheZohan you missed my point.
I know how he is and what he has done (good/bad and the mystery of a young lady's death) but he is not excempt from criticism. I mentioned Madeline McCann cos as a child she was quite innocent. Ted for all his achievements is a Kennedy and they are far from the saints the irish media portray them as.
And to suggest that Ted Kennedy is more deserving of a "free ride" thorugh this forum than Madeline is sickening.
    you disgust me.

In fact you missed the point so badly I think you are a fool

Have a go at a post, not the poster is the general rule here.
God knows I've been an idiot at times but good folk here have refrained from stating it, sticking within the forum rules.

A sad loss to US politics and, in some ways, the end of an era.

    May he rest in peace.

Sad that he's dead, he done alot of good regardless of what wrong he may have done

I wouldn't be a supporter of the whole political dynasty thing though.

Frankly too many of them were involved in governance, imo

I must be blind but where EXACTLY did TheZohan say that "...Ted Kennedy is more deserving of a "free ride" through this forum than Madeline...".

Before you go getting disgusted, can you point out the source of its justification for existence.
    Its a fair question!

He could have easily taken the democratic nomination in '72 and given Nixon a hell of a run but in the end refused to run on speculation about the '76 presidential race.

I reckon he didn't want to face an existing president in an election. But what does it matter, a fine man and a fine politician god rest his soul.

    .

Vote would have remained the same

49 states for Nixon v Kennedy home state, even in 1979 he was been roasted for Mary Jo, that and Nixon was popular

to some ted kennedy was american royality, a blue-blood,a surrogate to a litany of fatherless kennedy children,a irish/catholic,but to others he was a man that was kicked out of harvard for cheating, involved with gang crime, murder, coverups, that left two of his brothers assassinated, still most will remember him as a leading american politition,

I doubt he can. I still await where exactly your supposed to have stated what he claims.
I won't hold my breath for an accurate reply.
I think its better the rest of us move on and get back to the topic.

The man for any faults he might have, stood up to those that sought to put Ireland down, within the states.
He was one of the best unofficial ambassadors for our country that ever lived.
Granted, like some politicians, he made a few mistakes (Let he who has not sinned cast the first stone).
But for any errors he might have made, for the amount of good he did, those good things far, far exceed any possible (still not proven! Innocent until FOUND guilty?) misdeeds he might have done as a small few others claim.

He was a good man, a good ambassador and a hard worker.
I hope someday others can say just the same about me when I go. I'd be so blessed.
