I agree. I thought I knew how to read a map before but this course showed me there is so much additional detail on it which I was ignoring.
Very helpful. Thanks a lot to Paul for giving it and everyone else for organizing it.

Can't agree more. Thoroughly enjoyable and informative.

A few quid collected for mountain rescue too. Thanks all.

Found today's session really useful. Thanks to Paul for the expert tuition and to DNHOP for organising.

Paul delivered an excellent course today. I had no idea about mountain navigation, map reading or basic compass skills up until today. I now have the confidence to recce routes and look forward to maybe covering the legs of the STONE CROSS TO LUG RELAY in the coming weeks. Unfortunatly I won't be able to take part but I'd love to tag along with anyone going out on a recce.

Well done to donothoponpop and slogger for organising.

I put some of that nav stuff into action today. Conditions were quite challenging though, particularly when theres no discernible features in low cloud and rain :)

I live in Portmarnock and will drive either straight through the city or round the M50. Happy to divert. Send me a PM and we can figure it out. The real reason for picking you up is cause I want to see someone else running up hill at my pace (my DCM is 3:45-sub 4).

dp, is this still all systems go ? thread went a bit quiet and I'm just organising 'my diary' for next weekend.

I guess there are still places available for anyone else interested.

I'll be on the magic St. Kevins bus (unless there are any lifts from our Fair City ?).

Still going ahead as planned. The weather forecast: Tomorrow Saturday will mostly dry and bright with sunny spells. But increasing cloud in the afternoon, will bring some rain into the southwest and west, and this will become widespread overnight. Mild, top temperatures 13 to 16 C.

Pity really, as its rainy, windy, and overcast now, which are precisely the conditions I need to learn to navigate in! The ground should be wet after todays rain, so bring a change of footwear if needed.

By the way, this won't be exactly the same course as last time, so if anyone who did the last one wants to learn more techniques, feel free to stick your name down. See you all tomorrow.

Oh me too -- I was just checking :) I'll need a warm jacket by the looks. I'll see you tomorrow at 10.

RacoonQueen -- sent you a PM but 10am at Conolloy station infront of the taxi stand in the pick up point (anyone else is welcome PM me). I'll be driving a Silver Estate with cycle racks on top. I'll be on time :)

GAH after my bike fall I'm not sure if I'll be able to do this. What is the terrain like where we'll be?

Mountain. Rocky. Heather, and all the boggy sh!te that that entails. Basically, nothing pussies could handle. So, if a fall of your bike means you can't walk about the side of a mountain....

... which is my nice way of saying I fully expect to see you there tomorrow;)
    Hup!

You know me too well. :D I gave myself an hour to head to A&E I was still in incredible pain after the hour but it's been iced, eleveated, iced again...I've had lots of tea and chocolate and I feel mucho better. My mammy has me worried I'll silp, fall and hurt myself again. Mammys eh?!

The eternal Irish condition, being Mammied vs. being Mammy.

"I was in A&E today, tomorrow I'm going up a mountain I don't know, with some men I never met". Who's side would you prefer?;)

To be fair, this will be more of a 2 hour trek over trails using a map tomorrow, rather than a dangerous or strenuous navigation: you won't be in any physical hardship.

    You said 6 minute miles.

Just want to say thanks to Paul & Izzy for today's excursion around Brockagh. The amount of information that you hold within a good map, and how to relate it to your surroundings, is hugely important for hillrunning, and I'm going to relish next years routes. It's great to be able to navigate by contours and boulders, and plan a good route choice. We were lucky with the visibility, a great autumn day altogether.

There was talk after of including hill running techniques in the next course, which will be in the new year.
