Vue is such a s**t cinema. They don't do anything except show the latest kiddie crap. You'd think they'd be able spare one of their screens for something like this or for showing classic or smaller films such as Moon. But no - all 14 screens must be kept available for repeat screenings of G.I. Joe, G-Force 3D, etc.

Got an invite to a press screening earleir today and I'm in two minds about it. While I love Cameron and can't wait to see this I'm not sure if I can go watch a 25 minute preview then wait months for the rest. I also don't want to spoiler anything.

^ Can I have your ticket in all seriousness? I would really like to see it.
Dibs, bagsies, etc, the rest of you! *glares*

Edit: Ah just saw you're in Galway, blargh.

It's non transferable unfortunately and you need ID to prove you are who you say you are. I was told by someone that a certain somebody could be in attendance and if it's true I have to be there.

I can see how that rumour might start.
James Cameron is doing an introduction, but it will be recorded, sadly he won't be there in person.

Not Cameron, it's someone else. A certain quirky star who is currently filming over here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,729 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

looks like youre all going together under the guise of a boards film beers.

  • I won tickets!! Whoop!!! It's gonna be weird though... 15 minutes...?

I also can't wait till The Last Airbender! Hope Shyamalan doesn't wreck the show.

Got tickets to this from movies.ie too.

Looking forward to it :D. I'm not one for spoiling a film before I see it, but a (hopefully/presumably) carefully selected 15 minutes from a near 3hr film I currently know near nothing about? I'd say I can handle that.

I dunno, sometimes a 30 second trailer can show too much, so a 15 minute preview will almost certainly do far worse imo.

When is the film's release date 2010?

    Trailer on Apple.com (720p) ::
    http://images.apple.com/movies/fox/avatar/avatar2009aug0820a-tsr_720p.mov

    Impressions :
Gives away sweet feck all. CGI looks good but still looks disappointingly like a cartoon, to be honest. Absolutely no more excited about the film now than I was 30 minutes ago.

Apple's website seems to be dying. I'm very slowly loading it up here:

Looking forward to it. Hope the trailer doesn't rain on my parade.

Wow. It looks pretty amazing. Not sure on the look of some of the alien creatures, but the rest of it is brilliant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,295 ✭✭✭✭Duggy747

Not as "Eye-fùckingly" brilliant looking as it was made out to be but it still looks to be excellent.

Original big-budget movies are too few and far between anymore.

I'm just stoked that Cameron is back doing action, yay!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,954 ✭✭✭Paleface

Its a 2D teaser trailer. The movie itself is going to be in 3D so I'm sure that will enhance the experience.

I think its gonna be great!

Anyone else think the CGI looks really...animated? It doesn't look realistic at all. I mean, it looks interesting, but its bordering on a Pixar film or something.

I can't deny that it's incredible animation, just couldn't shake the thought that what I was looking at was seeing was all computer-generated. Still, amazing stuff.

    Can't wait!!!!

Yes - incredible animation indeed. I was hoping for a live-action film.. didn't get that feeling from the trailer.

Still though, as you said, looks amazing and I can't wait.

Maybe the 15 minutes tomorrow will look better on the big 3D screen :D

Looks meh to me....cg wise i mean, at first my jaw was dropped when its showing the wheelchair bound dude with the environments. Then from when the blue people start showing up it looks VERY CG. I mean its good cg dont get me wrong but far from what was promised. Still looking forward to it though, its james cameron, it looks to be original therefore it cant go wrong!

Its good, but cameron said that this would be the next jump like what stop CG was to stop motion. I dont think he succeeded.

The only downfall i can see with this movie is selling it to the masses , a 2d trailer will never give the full impression .
I think it will be amazing they should get the cinemas to screen 3d trailers to get the masses interested

I don't think you can say he hasn't succeeded if you are judging by seeing a 2D trailer on a computer screen. You can only make a sound judgement after seeing the film on a cinema screen in 3D.

Totally agree unless you see it in 3d you cant really knock it.

But the thing is, Basing it on that you have to watch it on a 3d screen is kinda preposterous. I mean i know for a fact most of the worlds cinemas arent 3d, nearly all of the worlds televisions(if not all) are not 3d. It will probably make the experience a lot more immersive for the select few who who have the luxury of 3d but if it isn't accessible to the masses then its not the huge leap forward in my books. Plus im no expert on 3d but to my knowlege having things in 3d doesnt effect the cg quality?

Lashed it onto me WDTV on a 46 inch tele. Looks more convincing larger for some reason. Still a wee bit disappointed as first impressions. TBH I don't think it's 100% final render. If you look at the bit where Worthington wheels down the ramp to the landing platform the backround looks a bit animated still. I don't think there's going to be MUCH of a change. It remains to be seen how the 3d will affect the effects. But we're all going to be watching this in 2D on our teles eventually so........
Anyway, I have faith in Cameron. sure he puts on a spectacle but he also makes a damn fine story. Remember, this is the guy who gave us Terminator, T2, Aliens, The Abyss, Piranha 2.... yeah, and titanic. ahem....... so it's not ALL about the effects

I'm not convinced. Honestly, I'm looking forward to seeing District 9 far, far more than Avatar. Here's hoping there's a decent story, because impressive visuals don't make the film.

Your point of this link exactly? I read the whole thing and it basically says that although 3d makes it more immersive fook all cinemas have it and it costs something along the lines of 80 k to implement the technology, therefore highlighting my point that for the everyman this film wont be such a major leap forward. Hell ill be checking it out in 3d(going to mean a trip to cork but im a massive cameron fan) but i cant imagine every joe soap making a trip, or every cinema forking out 80k to keep up with the technology!

The HD versions are definitely the way to go... it's decent without getting me too pumped to be fair.

    Doesn't give away much..

Also, is it bad that I get a weird vibe of "Beowulf" off the CGI?!

    Meh, time will tell!
