    From IFTN.ie
From their Montrose Studios RTÉ today unveiled their 2009/2010 new schedule which consists of an assortment of new and returning home-produced programmes. In the coming season there will be over 55 brand new home-produced series and documentaries, and over 45 returning home-produced series, made by in-house and independent producers.

Noel Curran, MDTV said: “All available resources have been channelled into home-produced programming. It has been made as cost-efficiently as possible with streamlined production models, at times utilising co-production funding, in order to ensure that viewers receive the quality, range and diversity of indigenous programming they expect of us and that is our promise to them as the Irish Public Service Broadcaster – their broadcaster of choice.”

RTÉ has many different strands of television and entertainment which they have addressed in launching this latest schedule. In their new factual series and documentaries, across Diversity, Arts and Religion, programmes will explore contemporary Irish life; from an examination of Ireland’s international position in the global economic slump, authored by David McWilliams, to a profile of one of Ireland’s most respected artists, Sean Scully; also included is a further instalment of David Coleman’s longitudinal study of Irish childhood in ‘21st Century Child’, to a brand new four-part series entitled ‘Does God Hate…’ presented by Marian Finucane.

Historical context is provided by a fascinating historical ’what if’ scenario in ‘If Lynch had Invaded’ and an alternative history of Ireland in the 20th century is authored and presented by Diarmaid Ferriter in a new three-part series.

In drama, the critically-acclaimed ‘Pure Mule’ returns for a ‘Last Weekend’ and a new series of the popular series ‘Raw’ is also in store. Ciaran Hinds and Aidan Quinn will appear on our screens in the feature film ‘The Eclipse’ whilst ‘The Clinic’ returns for another season. ‘Fair City’, now in its twentieth year, will continue to be broadcast 4 days-per-week, 52 weeks a year.

Lifestyle formats plug into and reflect a self-sufficiency theme, offering tips on living thriftily – with a new series ‘Living Lightly’; cooking tastily – with Rachel Allen, Trish Deseine and a new television face in Catherine Fulvio will appear on our screens in the coming months.

Entertainment programmes promise to lift spirits with topical debate, entertainment and chat from Ryan Tubridy in his first ‘Late Late Show’ season while some of Ireland’s top comedians are let loose on RTÉ Two and are amongst the talent in nine brand new and nine returning entertainment shows.

RTÉ News and Current Affairs continues to be at the forefront of events and with its coverage of the changing political, economic and social climate, launching its latest Current Affairs programme ‘The Frontline’ with Pat Kenny next month which will instigate lively debate on the most important news stories of the week between selected guests and a studio audience.

In addition, RTÉ Young People’s will continue to deliver creative and engaging indigenous programming for young people, in the ad-free environment of ‘Den Tots’ for pre-schoolers, and throughout ‘The Den’ for older age groups across the day.

RTÉ Sport, meanwhile, continues to deliver live sport and analysis while also delivering new documentaries on giants of the sporting world and key sporting moments.

Steve Carson, Director of Programming, RTÉ Television commented “RTÉ Television operates in one of the most competitive broadcasting environments in Europe with nearly nine in ten Irish homes now multi-channel. We compete for viewers against some of the world’s largest commercial broadcasters and the world’s best-funded public service broadcaster. At the heart of everything we do is the desire to create programmes that innovate and entertain, inform and initiate; that reflect the Ireland we live in and ensure that RTÉ continues to deliver for our viewers. We believe that this schedule achieves this aim.” The full line up includes:

The sound of these makes me angry enough to want to punch fluffy bunnies in the face. Not only do they all sound like typical Rté television-by-numbers sh*te, They all sound shíte enough to have been made up by Charlie Brooker were he to have ever covered Rté drivel in TvGoHome.

There may actually be some bright spots in that schedule, but those 'comedy extravaganzas' above have depressed me so much that I cant be arsed picking them out to mention them.

Ireland’s Mad Men looks at the pioneers of Ireland’s advertising industry.

Funny how they don't even give decent air time to the show they're piggybacking off of.

At least they got Flash Forward and Nurse Jackie. I heard a couple of months ago that they were filming a few bits for another series of Naked Camera but were keeping rather low key, anyone know if this is still happening?

Do they have to use the phrase "home-produced" 3 times in the first paragraph, as if RTE have just recently cracked the technology?

Some of it sounds terrific though!
(New) Maeve Higgins ’ Fancy Vittles Set in a country kitchen Maeve helps her sister Lilly, a brilliant cook, to prepare minor feasts for various people.

A minor feast? Whats that? Six people sitting down to a minor feast of Philadelphia light spread on hot toast?
Feargal Quinn’s Retail Therapy Feargal works with six Irish retail businesses, providing them with advice on how to survive the economic downturn.

If Fergal Quinn really knew how to run a retail business that would survive the economic downturn, he would run one himself. Methinks, Fergal Quinn's strategy for surviving the economic down turn is to get paid for hosting a show that tells retailers what they would do if they had more customers, and wait for the recession to go away.

I am really glad I renewed my tv licence. Particularly since I cant watch any of it, as RTE iPlayer won't work in the country I am in.
Was particularly glad I paid it the night before last when I could not watch the Ireland game on RTE iPlayer.

That said maybe just aswell I did not watch it. I'd be in the soccer forum demanding resignations.

So Lisbon II is a fait accompli, then?

How many of these TV shows are actual, you know, shows? With actors and a script and a plot?

How long until we get Arm Wrestling With Podge & Rodge, Youth Hostelling with Dave McSavage, Inner-City Judo and Cooking in Mountjoy, and, um... Monkey Hurling?

I didn't realise that TV shows were only scripted. RTÉ have 5 dramas this coming autumn, and they are renewing singlehanded after its success on ITV over the weekend.

What the hell is a minor feast? Isn't that a bit of an oxymoron, or is that what they were going for?

Why in the name of all things holy are RTE still entertaining that moron?

A few good things, a lot of crap things, par for the course for RTE I'd say.

There is not one thing in that list that I'd not flick past with a sigh.

They have no scripted comedy here, which is probably for the best. Their 11 O'clock show will probably suffer from the same fate as nightlive, etc. It will have only two writers, most likely RTE staffers from the current affairs department who once made Ediie Doyle (RTE head of entertainment, whose only background is making Prime Time) laugh in the canteen by mocking a TV3 programme whose only audince is smug RTE staff, feeling superior that at least their cheesy incompetence has money behind it.

How many more dramas could RTE produce a year if they cut out even 30% of their awful derivative lifestyle programming?

I smiled at the sudden revisionism of Mad Men too. I liked that Flash Forward is a "concept drama", RTE being far too high-brow for "sci-fi".

I'll be interested to see Pat Kenny's program. I've always felt that he should have been in current affairs all along instead of messing with "celebrities".

That topical comedy show sounds like they're trying to tap into The Daily Show market. I bet it'll be painful to watch.

Also, I can't believe David McSavage is still being given airtime. I presume it's because he's related to someone in RTÉ?

And some awful rubbish too as already noted:
Lifestyle rubbish and lame-brained comedy jostle for position with four-part tale of man who rescued seahorses

    By John Boland

    Friday August 14 2009

RTE's managing director of television Noel Curran promises "a diverse schedule full of quality Irish programmes".
The station's new director of programming Steve Carson assures us that "at the heart of everything we do is the desire to create programmes that innovate and entertain, inform and initiate".
So, no more lifestyle rubbish or lame-brained attempts at comedy from the national broadcaster then?
If only. In fact, there are 11 new lifestyle shows and seven more assaults on our funny bones, being lined up this season.
An RTE press release warns us that some of Ireland's "top comedians" are to be "let loose on RTE2".
That means Jason Byrne and Dave McSavage by the way. Ah well, each to their own.
Drama, meanwhile, will not just provide "diversion, intrigue, grit and glamour" but will also be "culturally resonant" -- a boast somewhat undermined by the forlorn listing of a mere four dramas, two of them being 'Fair City' (now in its 20th year) and 'The Clinic' (seven seasons old) and a third "reuniting" the characters from 'Pure Mule', who, apparently, are "much loved."
Not in my house, they aren't.
Then there's a new religious series called 'Does God Hate..?', a studio discussion chaired by the "incomparable" Marian Fiucane and teasing out whether God hates women, sex, science and whatever you're having yourself. Riveting stuff, I'm sure.
And if it's even more stimulus you want, there'll be "hearty topical debate" in Ryan Tubridy's 'Late Late Show' and "lively debate" in Pat Kenny's 'The Frontline'.
This current affairs show takes over from the axed 'Questions and Answers' and admirers of Kenny's broadcasting acumen will welcome the fact that he's back doing something serious on television, even if the format -- a studio discussion on the main stories of the week between invited guests and an audience -- makes it seem very like the show it's replacing.
Overall, the programmes that seem most likely to capture the imagination are of a factual nature, including David McWilliams's 'Addicted to Money', which will look at Ireland's situation in the global economic slump; Diarmaid Ferriter's 'The Limits of Liberty', a series examining life in Ireland after independence (even if Sean O Mordha's 'Seven Ages' fairly exhaustively covered the same period); 'Killers', about such high-profile charmers as the Scissor Sisters and Joe O'Reilly; 'The Sheriff and Me', about people faced with serious debt; and a look back at 'The Way We Worked', for those who remain familiar with the vanishing concept of employment.
Mind you, there's also 'The Seahorseman', which requires a four-part series to recount an Irish man's attempt to save an ancient seahorse.
No, I haven't the foggiest. And finally there's Charlie Bird's 'American Year', which might enlighten those of us who are constantly puzzled at what exactly RTE's intrepid ace reporter is up to these days.

That topical comedy show sounds like they're trying to tap into The Daily Show market. I bet it'll be painful to watch.

Lets wait and see, RTÉ have had some success with topical comedy, Hall Pictorial, DFTG, X-it poll and the Panel.

I look forward to the boards discussions on it.

lookit , just pick one show and do it well rte.
Stop ripping off have i got news for you , you've tried it twice or 3 times already.pay the money and import the real thing if you really really need to have a show that takes the mick out of the news of the week.

why not just pay whoever to knock out 6 or 12 episodes of that single handed show that ye hide on bank holiday weekends and christmas.yes i know it isnt strictly home grown, but sod it it's watchable.

lashing out cash for crap and trying to justify it by saying it's homegrown isnt on. you'd be better off buying in quality shows from abroad than paying some donkey to create rubbish irish shows ( shane mc gowan and victoria whatever her name is - come the hell on.)

In short , i've had more interesting bowel movements.

My mother always referes to some rubbish on RTE once in a while ("did you see it, did you see it?") and I do have to keep telling her "WE DON'T WATCH RTE!!!"

With this amount of pure NEW rubbish, nothing is going to change our mind at the rate of pure new garbage coming from them!

I'm excited about Flash Forward but the domestic stuff looks truly diabolical.

    RTÉ Religious

(New) Does God Hate…? Marian Finucane chairs a series of lively studio discussions, in which she asks people from a variety of faiths: Does God Hate… Sex, Science, Women and Peace?
Cuh. 'Hot' on the heels of 2006's God Delusion book. RTE... always a follower, never a leader.

Does anyone expect Finucane to actually strongly press people to explain their religion-backed bigotries? No. They'll get plenty of snaking wiggle room to just equivocate and distract. These programmes will most likely be poorly chaired. (Hope I'm wrong, though.)

Get Dawkins himself to put the questions out, no guff:

    RTÉ Entertainment

(New) Val Falvey T.D. Ardal O’Hanlon stars as recently elected TD Val Falvey in this brand new six-part series written by Arthur Mathews (Father Ted) and Paul Woodfull (Stew).
This carries more hope than most comedy offerings from RTE, only if because Ardal and Arthur's names are attached to it.
All Ireland Talent Show returns on a mission to uncover the most engaging, exciting, impressive and entertaining talents this country has to offer, in bigger and better show and a new companion show, presented by Aidan Power.
Why is this tame milquetoast Gong Show still around? Oh yeah... cheap telly fodder.

(New) Sarah & Steve: from the makers of Dan & Becs, this new comedy focuses on a couple from Tallaght and their struggling relationship.
Ugh. A further attempt at a quarterbaked Marion & Geoff ripoff? No thanks.

    RTÉ MUSIC

(New) All Island School Choir The pick of the country’s second level school choirs will star in this five programme series presented by Anne Cassin.
This is the best RTE could do with regard to new music programmes on telly? Lousy.

The Panel has - unexpectatly in my opinion - been renewed again, but The 10 O'Clock Show would seem to be much the same idea in a repackaged format. The Byrne Ultimatium would seem also to be moving in on that category, though it sounds more like a reincarnation of Don't Feed the Gondalas.

Sarah and Steve seems to be basically Dan and Becs relocated from Foxrock to Tallaght.

Pat Kenny's new show (can we drop the definte article and just call Frontline, please?) may be interesting, though it seems like it will thread on Prime Time's toes. There will need to be a clear delination between the two IMO, or else they might just as well call it Prime Time.

You mean Prime Time: The Frontline

Only thing there that I'd watch will be The Panel, Flash Forward (Though they'll probably stick it on at the ideal hour of 4:30am) and Val Falvey (only because a friends an extra)

I'd love to scrap RTE 2 and the notion of "Irish Programming" so we can just use the budget to fill RTE 1 with good international stuff or just give it to TV3

Or TG4 both seem better with their international shows. But both have recently start with the late night schedules with TV3 having PlayTV pushing their early night schedule into the early morning schedule.

We do need "Irish Programming" weather you like them or not many Independent producers rely on RTE for their existence.

Why bother with Irish channels at all if you are only showing cheap imported programming?

    RTÉ Lifestyle.

Hadn't the BBC a choir competition programme earlier this year.

There seems to be very little originality in the programmes, any of the new programmes seem to be very similar formats to what is on other channels. Am looking forward to seeing the Pat Kenny show. Who thought giving Maeve Higgins her own show was a good idea, she's just not funny

This is mainly an announcement of their Prime Time schedule, note the absence of all of their other imports that reside in the late nights of one and two.

UTV used to have a Choir Competition, I wish RTÉ hadn't thought of it, I suppose it is Public Service Broadcasting, but I would rather see them broadcast The NSO Proms since they are also funded by the Licence fee.

Am I the only one thinking Karl Spains show could be decent? There's a ****eload of excellent rock covers bands in Ireland making a decent living that never get attention through the likes of AI Talent ****e and the like.

have the applied for the AITS?

All of the shows could be decent, but its better to criticize before we even see them. Ironically the number of threads for all of the shows will be the same as usual on boards. This is just the start of people say everything is crap, sure that is the boards way, and lets on stop now. :D

It's not just the boards way, it's just the Irish way!

The Irish are a pessimistic bunch. In reality there are some pretty good programs in that list. As I've said before I've a feeling "The School" is going to shake things up. Joe Duffy calls and all that.

Why is it that no one can criticize without being accused of being "typically Irish"? Is it not possible that the criticism is deserved?

In the case of these new shows, some of them could be good, we just don't know till they air, but we already know of people like Pat Kenny, Meabh Higgins and David McSavage, and should be able to form a reasonable opinion of what their shows will be like.

I have no particular opinion on either Kenny or Higgins, but in the case of McSavage, who is a talentless nump, I feel quite angry that RTE are wasting the licence money that I pay, on him.

Typically response of "that's ****e", ironically it typically Irish of someone to point out how typically Irish that is.

It is possible to criticize when deserved but they have only just announced their schedule and everyone fell on them like a ton of bricks.

I am sure I will be the first to say that Mr. McSavage is ****e when he airs again. He was ****e when he aired a few months ago, I am surprised that RTÉ didn't notice. (not really that surprised TBH).

But I won't bring in the licence fee to say it.
