Just curious as to what some of you guys do with money you earn. After you pay bills etc and maaybe if you have spare money do you just go out and treat yourself to some new clothes or would you save it or do something else?

No. I spent €25 on a pair of jeans once, that's the most I've ever paid for an article of clothing.

Yeah, way too much... but there's nothing like the feel of a brand new, light blue Ralph Lauren shirt on your back :(

No, I try and buy the cheapest clothes possible.

I tend to go out spend way too much with a big grin on my face and come home disgusted by what I've done :(

I spend any spare money I have on clothes, shopping is great! :D

I haven't bought clothes in over a year, only women and idiots spend ridiculous amounts of money on clothes.

There is the problem "treat yourself".

Buy them, buy them cheap and buy them fake.

You feel great all the time.

Nope, i'm not trying to impress anyone with my clothes, cheap and functional works for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,910 ✭✭✭OneArt

I buy nice clothes, but cheap nice clothes like Penney's. Or if Next/Burton/River Island have sales, which they normally do. Score!!

Other than that I wouldn't pay for example a ridiculous price like 100 for a pair of fricken jeans.

I'll buy the odd nice thing like a cardigan even if its a little pricey (35 euro to me is pricey)

other than that, my hard-earned cash goes on drinking.

€100 for a pair of jeans is not ridiculous. when i was a busto student i didn't spend much money on clothes but then i copped on, and the difference between them and w/e you're buying in penny's or w/e is immense and certainly worth it.

No. The most I've ever spent on jeans is €12.
    I spent €125 on a coat though

I buy my jeans in the outlet mall for between £5 and £20, mainly because they sell jeans that are a perfect fit for me there. These jeans will last in excess of a year. Tops from Dunnes/whatever I get given for birthdays/christmas.

So I don't spend a lot on clothing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,342 ✭✭✭✭That_Guy

The last time I bought clothes I spent €350. I was given money for my birthday so I went out and bought new clothes which were badly needed.

On the rare occasion that I do venture into town to buy clothes I spend about €60 I'd say but I only buy clothes the odd time.

How so? I have a few pairs of jeans, had them all for years and I doubt they cost €100 when added up. What am I missing?

    Same.
I think £30 for a shirt (NEXT) was the most I've spent on one thing.

Bought a nice top and jeans from Tesco yesterday - amazingly good quality for the price (around £16 together I think)... But Asda George FTW

comfort/fit/style/quality, if you ever get around to buying a decent pair you'll realise what you've been missing out on.

No, not a hope. I HATE cloths shopping. It bored me, I just wanna get in and out. I have a huge surplus of casual shirts and I'd only need a formal one every now and then so I have about 4 which is grand. Have a surplus of pants and jeans atm too...life is good...
Go clothes shopping, buy enough to keep you "in style" for the next year, and life is all good.

Addition: And if they go out of style, you get branded all individualistic and cool. Laziness is awesome.

Not at the moment because I haven't seen any really nice clothes in the shops for months and Im quite low on money.
I used to spend most of my spare money on clothes but now Im more likely to spend it going out

Not really too much, most expensive thing I've had apart from suits is a jacket for 320e, but I won that playing golf. Spending wise, just buy some typical things like shirts/jeans etc, not too expensive like..

I only go into clothes shops out of necessity. I also have no sense of style.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Yep, spend a decent bit. I like nice clothes, and in my experience, what I like tends to cost money. I buy cheaper stuff if I like it, but all too often it's not the case. Went to buy jeans last week, bought a €400 suit. I can not think of a good reason for me to have a suit.

I can't think of a good reason not to have a suit. Good suits are awesome. Comfortable, you can use them for loads of social things blah blah, and everybody looks awesome in a suit

I spend about 100 a year on clothes at xmas every year, 3 pairs of jeans in dunnes or pennys a few tshirts and a jumper, thats it. In fact the pair of jeans im wearing now i have for the last 3 years and they still great.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 133 ✭✭superLeetive

I spend far too much money on clothes (and eating out) but I like to think I shop fairly sensibly.. by that I mean that I've stopped buying stuff that I'll never wear which will hang in my wardrobe for a year with the tags still on them before being donated to St. Vincent de Paul... used to waste so much money by doing that! Still have far too many clothes though.. my wardrobe and drawers are bursting to the gills and my floor is just a sea of clothes and handbags...don't get me started on handbags!!

Pretty much what I was thinking when I had the questionable moment. :p And to politely correct you, everybody looks awesome in a *well tailored* suit. ;)

I'm broke, so I don't have the money to spend on buying a lot of clothes! I buy most of my stuff in Penneys.

But I like the style/fit/comfort/quality of the ones I have, otherwise I wouldn't have bought them, still no need to spend €100 on a pair, the price tag doesn't determine any of these qualities.

if im working before christmas i may buy 300 euro to 500 euro of clothes this prob means nice jumper jeans shirt, a hoody maybe runners . Rest of the year one or two small bits like t shirts and shorts if im goin on hols.
I tend to save an amount and go shopping with that for good jeans etc. but wood buy hoodys and stuff online as the fit isnt as important

I'd buy a pair of jeans every 5 or so months. Tshirts a bit more often. Im a lazy shíte though so once I've found a size that fits I'll shop online.

you must not be very aware of those qualities if whatever you're paying 10-20yoyo for satisfies you. more expensive jeans are made out of better material, have better cuts, etc. go get yourself a pair of ralph lauren or diesel or something similar and i can pretty much guarantee that you wont go back to buying cheap jeans again.

i buy clothes only when the current ones develop holes/tears

otherwise i really couldnt care what the hell im wearing once its comfy and suited to the weather

Yeh spend more than I should on clothes, it's my biggest indulgence but I save on other things.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,661 ✭✭✭✭Helix

i spend €200 a week and save the rest

means ive got thousands of quid whenever i want to treat myself properly, rather than spunking it all on crap. also means the recession hasnt affected me in the slightest, coz im not an idiot

money spent on clothes is money that could have been spent on my car.

    by which i mean...wasted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,244 ✭✭✭sdanseo

I've bought very little up until last month when I spent about €260 on clothes for a new job - trousers, shirts etc.

Before that in the immediate two years I think I bought a couple of pairs of boxers and two polo shirts totalling <€50. Havent grown much and I'm a cheap student, though :P

I hate shopping & usually do 1 big shop every year in the sales to get it out of the way!

If your willing to spend a little extra time searching you get some great bargains in TK MAXX.

I Recently bought Ralph Lauren shirts there for €20 each which had a normal RRP of €112.50 :). Cant go wrong with that ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,736 ✭✭✭OctavarIan

I'd buy maybe one or two new pieces of clothing a month. Pretty much everything I buy is on sale and less than €20 (got a pair of Topman jeans for €8 there recently, they'll do for messing about in). Only things I would spend more on are jackets or jeans which I'd wear daily for most of the year, even then I have only gone above €50 once or twice.

That said if I wasn't a student I could see myself spending way more.

Levi are the best for inexpensive jeans. Good construction, huge variety of great cuts, lots of different washes, long lasting.

Generally jeans in Irish stores are waaay overpriced, even more so than other clothes. Best bet is to try on in the shop then go buy online. You'll get them for usually around half the price. Usually Levi go for around $50 iirc.

Go over $100 and you're looking at APC, Nudies, all that fashionista stuff.

    I disagree.
I tried the expensive stuff, and it was not comfortable for me.
Went back to jeans that fit comfortably, and don't cost a fortune.
Labels mean nothing to me - I don't care who made the shirt or jeans, I just want them to look good, be comfortable and affordable.
