When you were small, what did you want to be when (and if!) you grew up?

I remember a friend of my sister's insisting she wanted to be a witch :D

I always knew what I wanted to do ; from the age of eight onwards, I knew I wanted to work in the media. Developed from wanting to be a journalist / author to wanting to work in Advertising / PR.
    So far, so good :)

I always wanted something to do with english and writing too and have managed to work my way in so far, also wanted to be an archaeologist for years after seeing jurassic park, would still be fun!!!

A zookeeper, an FBI agent, then back to a zookeeper.

Then all through school everyone kept going on about how good I was at English and kinda convinced me that I should do Journalism. Have an hons degree in it but so what??? Has yet to get me anywhere. Think I have fallen out of love with it.

Wish I had followed the childhood dream of working with animals. :(
Now I would love to do the animal thing or do costume design/make-up but I feel I am stuck (maybe I should go to the Feeling Blue thread)

A doctor. I nearly went into grad med too, but changed my mind at the last minute now so now I want to be a Clinical Psychologist. Much fewer hours!

I'd still love to work in a zoo and look after the animals though.

I can't for the life of me remember what I wanted to be when I was little... my earliest memory of having a career ambition is when I was in secondary school and I wanted to be an English teacher.

Went to uni to study English, and gave it up after a year! I hated it. Studied German and Linguistics instead... and ended up a journalist!

Weirdly, I was going to put journalism as an option on my CAO, but decided against it. Really glad I didn't now, since I don't think I'd be in the same place career-wise if I had done an actual degree in it, as opposed to just getting the experience while I was studying.

I want/still want to be an actress/director/writer/something to do with history...

Anything to do with English, history or the stage. I did 2 years of journalism and while people say I should have finished it, it was a waste of time for me. I didn't enjoy and realised I couldn't face another two years of the people in the course or the course itself! :(

Someday though... I will snap the cord of the phone thats holding me at reception and do something I want to... *sigh* (maybe I should move to the feeling blue thread....)

Wow, seems like there's a lot of creative people in this thread :)

I also wanted to be a fashion designer when I was small! I used to make my own magazines, sketching designs on models and writing about trends!

I think it's funny, how my childhood dreams are so in sync with my ambitions now!

At the moment, I'm about to go into third year of a media degree. I like it, but I can't wait to be out of it so I can specialise!
This isn't helped by my current job which is seeming a lot better than college!

When I was younger I wanted to be a lawyer, but found out that it probably wasn't the best option for me as I'm quite the pushover and don't have a flare for English and debating.

I then went on to think about psychology, but figured I wouldn't get the points cos I was/am lazy in school.

By the time 6th year rolled around I had computer science, nursing and business through Irish as my selections. Within that time I discovered body piercing and from about 17 - 23 I wanted to do that up until a few weeks ago. College was always a fall back but made a bad decision as I hate computers and well there's feck all jobs.

Now I don't know what I wanna do, I've been working part time as a care assistant all this time, and some other jobs like DJ'ing etc. Really am lost.

I'm thinking of going down the weird avenue of lapidary (carving nice stones etc) or wood turning, not sure yet. What I am sure of is that I wanna do something artistic, studying computer science really messed me up. So rigid, no space for creativity apart from web design and graphic design, which I've done and do in my spare time for the laugh and to keep me sane.

So yeah, still a mess but have a slight glimmer of an idea somewhere in between thinking about file choosers and variables in java... :pac:

I always end up doing unique stuff, not by choice, just sort of fall into it all. So time will tell :)

I wanted to be a nurse. I had the lil costume too. I think it was actually a midwife that I wanted to be to be honest as I remember helping my friends give birth to cushions in the shed!

From the age of about 10 -17 I wanted to be a vet, I even worked in a Vet's. Then I had to make the decision if I really really wanted to work that hard to first get the grades, then do 4 years of tough tough courses and my lazy self decided against it and put down IT.

I really should have put down Science, I have such a love of it I could have done really well and actually enjoyed my studies. Oh well!

I always wanted to be a solictor. (Matlock's fault)
Until I became a teenager and realised that I'd make a terrible one.
I'm far too honest and disorganised.
I couldn't resist the urge to sell out/bate my scumbag clients.

I still have no idea what I would like to be. :(

You know you could still follow your dream (sorry to sound so clichéd!). It's much easier to go back and study and there is good support for mature students.

I wanted to be a writer first (I used to write little stories all the time) but I ended up doing Science (which I love, but which has killed my ability to write, damn you third person passive!).

I would love to run a bookshop.

I guess I just don't know where to go to get advice on returning to college. I wish there were career guidance councillors after you leave school!!

Funny...I did the writing thing and wish I had pursued Science!! Wanna swap?? :D

I think there is a mature student forum on here, that might help!

Oh yes please lets swap! :)

Seriously though, I do love science, but I do wish I could write a novel in my spare time!

I did an animation project in college using My Little Pony :)
That pony was my life and soul for the last two months of college!

I'd like to work in animation too, actually! I love drawing cartoons ... anime type stuff, which is rather dorky but hey!

I'd also love to be a fashion buyer.

    So many choices!

Originally, I wanted to be Batman. When that fell through, I felt that being a Power Ranger was much more glamorous and so chose that as my career path. However, when they changed the format of the show, that dream soured too. For years as a kid, I wanted to be an actor. But I can't act. I've had a lot of pipe-dreams, ranging from musician to author but I don't think I'd ever realistically make any money in either trade, so......

Mostly farm work in this country.

When I worked at the vets I had to do lots of unsavoury jobs
    - dehorning cattle
    - taking cow stool and blood samples (both get you shat on)
    - Treating horrible infections of large animals (the stink!)
    - Assisting in spaying cats and dogs and rabbits (rabbits have bizarre insides)
    - Putting puppies to sleep that were just dumped on the doorstep
    - Comforting people whose pets have just died or need to be put down

None of this put me off, it was the thought of having no social life for 5 years!

I have only ever wanted to be in the Army, and if I can't do that, then I refuse to grow up, I am travelling if I can't get in and I will never stop travelling.

I'm don't want to be defined by a career, I just want to live life.

My Dad wanted me to be a track star; that was vetoed by my mother.

Then he wanted me to be an environmental lawyer.

For a while, I wanted to be a dancer -- until I realized how difficult and unstable it was. I've also wanted to be a writer/author, if I could ever lock it up and sit down to write something decent.

Now when I grow up, I think I just want to be happy.

I wanted to be a JCB driver until I was about ten, the first present I asked for was a JCB. I drove my poor mother demented anytime we were out because if we passed one I would talk about it for hours!

I then wanted to be a gardener, a writer, a singer, I think at one stage I wanted to be in Greenpeace and save whales!

I'm now going back as a mature student to study archaeology, something I have been obsessed with for years, and will one day be Indiana Jones V2!:D

    a vet.

it was my dream from age 8 until 16 when my LC chemistry teacher took me aside and very gently told me that he could see i was working my arse off and was still only getting D's and i needed to consider carefully whether i wanted to pin all my hopes on getting a C in the LC when that was highly unlikely to happen.

so i switched from chemistry to social and scientific in the second term of my leaving cert year and gave up on all my dreams.... i'm 25 now and still not over the diappointment but am about to start a degree in environmental science

I wanted to be a hairdresser when I was really small, my mum talked me out of that pretty quickly. I also wanted to be a vet for ages but couldn't stand the muck on the farms and I'm afraid of cows so that was a non runner.
Oh wanted to be a ballerina for a while as well and then a gymnast. The only constant was that I didn't want a desk job! I went with physio in the end.

I wanted to be a computer geek of the highest order and I am one. :D

I also considered dentistry because it seemed like a handy job that earned loads of cash. I also considered vet and / or doctor.

When I hit 45 and have a mid-life-crisis I intend studying for a physics degree and plying the ESA for a job. They don't have too many openings in Ireland unfortunately.
