I do better in the mornings if I've had between 5 and 7 hours - closer to 7. Anything above 8 hours and you begin to feel lazy. if I hit 10 then **** me if im getting out of bed at all that day.

I like sleep. I find 10 hours works well for me. 8 will do in a pinch. Anything less than that and I can barely function.

I was going to say "Lucky you being pissed off with getting less than 8 hours sleep a night" and say how pissed off I am with having only got 2 hours last night and 3 to 4 the previous night.

But the thing about sleep is that it's all relative to the person in question. You need 8 to 10 so anything less than that is hard to take, and so people should accept that.

Me, I would be delighted with 5 hours. My mind races and races and to be honest, quite often, I find myself in tears out of pure frustration at not being able to sleep. It is a horrible thing to have to go through.

But my 5 is your 10. So I'd bet you have people saying to you "what are you complaining about, ya got 6 hours".. but you're going, "It doesn't matter, I'm so tired I feel like my head could explode".

And that's the way I feel after 2 or 3 hours.

    It's horrible.

Even had a few beers last night in the hope that I'd nod off but no, just got the 2 hours. Awake now and it's 14 hours after many nights of crap sleep, and do you reckon I'll get much tonight? Nope, no sign yet.

But it's ok. It'll come eventually.

And I've spanners on here to mingle with until it happens so, cén dochar.

I am well rested after 8 hours sleep since switching to The 6day week.

I sleep for bout nine hours every night, like a log. There's no waking me, and if i've been out the night before, forget it! People have shook me and called my name and i still don't wake. I'd sleep forever if i could. If i sit on a comfy chair during the day, no matter how much sleep i've had, i will always start to drift off! Ah laziness....

I'm in the 6-8 hours crowd, although now my OH works evenings and gets home around 2:30-3 a.m. . . . so most nights I'm sleeping for 2-3 hours, then waking up for anywhere from 10-40 minutes, then back to sleep for another 3-4 hours.

Can't be good for my sleep cycle, but . . . whaddyagonnado?

I dont sleep much, 6 hours is good for me. Is there any other bad sleepers in after hours?

Whats your diet like and do you drink anything like coffee etc?

I used to have terrible insomnia, sometimes going days without sleep. It seems to have been sorted now.

A good sleep aid can be 5-HTP, but you need to order in from England because in Ireland we think that amino acids are medicine.

Diets good. Every 2-3 hours I have something small.

If I dont go to the gym or go running a few times a week I'm f*cked for sleep. Fell asleep around 2 last night, up at 7. Grand now!

As regards caffine? Nothing after about 5pm. Even tea would keep me awake.

Sounds a lot like me a couple of years back, just no real discernable reason as to why i was getting **** all sleep.

5 hours and I can get out of bed no hassle and have the tiredness hit 18 hours later. Any more sleep and I struggle to wake up and then struggle badly to get asleep that night.

i used to have really bad sleeping problems, things like that night time giddiness, insomnia, restlessness/anxiety or waking up in the middle of the night with heart palpitations/panic/just unable to get back to sleep.

i eventually solved it by learning about balancing my blood sugar levels & how much of an effect low blood sugar can have on our bodies/minds.

here are a couple of tips:

    • avoid sugary foods especially in the couple of hours before bed. going to UGC and having a large coke with some pick n mix plus a tub of ben n jerrys = absolutely no proper sleep (it took me a long time to figure that one out ;) )
    • avoid caffeine - this includes tea, coffee, chocolate, coke and other caffinated drinks (like red bull)
    • avoid alcohol - people who tell you to drink a glass of wine to help you sleep are wrong! alcohol = liquid sugar in the body and may result in a sugar crash later in the night (for example if you wake up freezing in the middle of the night after going for a couple of pints this is low blood sugar).
    • avoid simple carbohydrates, or at least don't make them a huge part of your main diet. eat complex ones instead. simple carbs are things like white bread/pasta/rice.
    • don't skip meals (especially breakfast). eat regularly & don't go for long hours without food. don't go to bed not having eaten anything in a long time.
    • get about 15 mins of good exercise in every day - use a workout dvd if you're not a gym or sporty type.

these are all designed to promote stable blood sugar which will help with natural sleep. patrick holford has some great books on balancing blood sugars, type the holford diet into google if you're interested or go to the diet section of your local bookshop.

for immediate help with a nights sleep:

    • have a banana - they contain tryptophan which will help sleep.
    • if you don't have a banana then have some wholegrain toast with peanut butter on it (no white bread or peanut butter with sugar in it). turkey also contains tryptophan, so a turkey sandwich (with brown bread) can help too.
    • drink some camomile tea or a mug of warm milk
    • take a vitamin B complex (i take one with magnesium when i can't sleep)
    • have a really hot bath with a couple of drops of lavendar oil in it.
    • don't do anything that will wake your mind up like playing computer games. relax instead by reading a book or listening to music. i used to put on family guy on the tv and fall asleep on the couch.

some of this may sound extreme, but things were really really bad for me so i literally had to change or go crazy. i get lots of proper sleep these days :)

I can barely stay awake most of the time. Mornings are a nightmare, I just can't get up and leave it all to the last minute due to clinging to the mattress.

I would happily sleep for 24 hours if I was let. I am never satisfied with the sleep I get. I have to spend nearly all Sunday in bed to get over having to get up at the crack of 9 o clock 5 days a week.

    Am always chronicly tired. :(

that can be down to low blood sugar too. try keeping a banana on your bedside locker & eat it first thing when you get up, it might help a bit.

I sleep around 8 hours a night. Nearly never have a problem going to sleep. But I do take some precautions like not drinking coffee after 2pm (it's ok to drink it after dinner but not in the afternoon!) and no tea after 7 or 8.

I get really cranky if I can't get to bed in time. For me it's not so much the length of sleep but when I get to sleep that makes the difference.

hope it works a bit! also don't choke on the banana by falling back asleep while eating it ;)

i've also found that letting light in really helps with feeling like a slug in the morning. in my last place there was absolute darkness in the bedroom, the curtains were really heavy so there was no light & getting up was nightmareish. but in my new place there are only blinds on the windows so there's way more light and i tend to wake up much more easily.

when the light hits your eyelids in the mornings it starts a chemical process in your body that wakes you up naturally, so if your room is too dark then it can stop this process from happening.

there are these lamp alarm clocks you can get that work by switching on a bulb that is much stronger than a normal lightbulb and gradually it brightens so that you wake naturally, kind of like if the sun was rising. if your life is a total nightmare with not being able to get out of bed then you might like to consider getting one??

But like the sun rises now at 5.30! I lived in a house like that before and I never realised how bad I was sleeping til I moved to a place with shutters! (I don't have any more trouble than usual in getting up)

I've heard about those and they sound interesting! My sister in law got one with birdsong....my brother goes mad as he is a light sleeper and can't stand the tweets of it!

The room is bright but the boyfriend is kinda insomniac so I cant make it any brighter!

He's tossing and turning and I am crashed out like a hibernating bear!

i guess the thing about sleep is that it works differently for each of us, i only know what works for myself after i went through a long period of sleep problems!

I have terminal insomnia apparently, whereby I wake up about 2 hours before my alarm clock goes off i.e. 5 a.m. instead of 7. I also cannot sleep before 11 at night which results in 5 hours average sleep a night and permanent insanity.

I usually try for between 6-8 hours, I never sleep that well though, I wake regularly through the night so it is never a solid sleep. Today I feel really tired so I feel a sleep on the bus will definately happen!
