You're not going to like either game. I found them highly over rated.

Scrolling beat'em ups follow the same principles of Halo. Halo has the principle of 30 seconds of gameplay. Scrolling beat'em ups however work on the principle of 30 seconds of fun. :P

    Meow Retro, Meow.
Halo has plenty of fun, it's just sprite whores like yourself fail to be interested in anything that doesn't feature, well, sprites!
And Retro, didn't you play and finish all the Halo games so far?
A lot of Halo hours logged for someone who dislikes the game, no?

I like Ikaruga though, and Blazing Star.
I can't help but have a soft spot for Hellfire on the MD, as well as Biohazard Battle.

I've finished an awful lot of awful games in my time. Halo 1 wasn't bad for it's time and was worth playing until the halfway point were it got very tedious. I played it to the end hoping it would pick up but it didn't. Halo 2 had a cracker of an opening but it just turned to absolute crap when you started the arbiter mission. I played it to see if it would pick up and just when it looked like it was it ended. It was one of the hardest games for me to finish (not difficulty wise) and only managed it because I was playing co-op with a friend. Halo 3 wasn't all that bad. An ok dumb action game that me and my brother got through, it just wasn't anything special at all. The problem with Halo 1 and 3 is that there are far superior FPS games in everyway. Halo 2 on the other hand is just unforgiveable.

And I do like 3D games without sprite art. System Shock 2 and Metroid Prime and 2 FPS games that take a dump all over the Halo franchise :P

Metroid Prime series and FEAR 2 are much better than Halo, I know this to be true, but I still lurve Halo anyways

I've been playing through Hellfire a bit recently. Finally got around to picking up a copy. Great game alright. The colour of the enemy bullets is really annoying though, I keep flying straight into them.

You really are one contrary ****er aren't you?

Seriously, you would argue with your own toenails if you were trapped in a lift on your own!

FEAR 2, not terrible in any discernible way, full of invention, good weapons, good scary bits.... Nothing remotely poor about that game, much better than the good first one, far better than the stand alone mission packs that weren't even made by the original developers and, best of all, soon to be joined by the amazingly well titled FEAR 3!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,360 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I just found it was FEAR but with cutscenes that were predictable and as scary as a damp tissue. Much preferred the first one although I did turn off FEAR 2 because I thought it wasn't worth my while.

Yeah and I'm having a bad day :P

By far my favourite game this generation. At least it's getting a Euro release for the dopes too lazy to import.

Have you played Red Dead Redemption yet? It's rivaling Fallout 3 as my own favourite game of this generation.

Still haven't played Demons Souls yet though. Maybe some day when I pick up a ps3 in a charity shop.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,360 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Nope still haven't played Red Dead Redemption. Really didn't think too much of GTA 4 so it was under my radar but really want to play it now but haven't the time to put in because of this thesis :(

Ah forget about souless GTA IV, this completely blows it away in every respect.

You're in luck though as it seems to be out of stock everywhere. So get your Thesis finished before shops get more copies in!

I saw loads of Red Dead in HMV in the Pav in Swords, going for 45 new as well.
Gamestop are selling Lost Planet 2 for a fiver once you trade in a game with a preowned value of 15 or over, they also have Split Second for 15 when trade in a similar 15 euro preowned value title.
Going to go for Lost Planet 2 at least, Split Second seems more my type than Blur, which looks a bit like Wipeout, or rather Rollcage but with street cars.

Streets of Rage on the other hand - you can **** right off! They're still fantastic. Espectially 2 & 3. The graphics are among the best on the Megadrive and the fighting goes far beyond just pressing punch and kick. The sheer numble of enemy sprites on the screen at once during harder modes with no flickering is a feat in itself.

Anyone who says otherwise deserves to have all their games taken away for sheer lack of taste.

I dunno about 3 i hated SoR3, mainly because of the music, thats the one thing that SoR made itself great, and they messed it up. I don't get how anyone likes the Character Select screen music, it soulds like it belongs on Atari 2600!!!

Sor1 was the best SoR game though, SoR2 was amazing still but it was too easy, good thing is though they gave Blaze a Dan-Like Kadouken xD

I spent most of yesterday playing PSX games. Played me some Resident Evil (the Dual Shock edition of the Director's Cut, it has a different soundtrack) and WipEout 2097, Street Fighter Ex Plus Alpha and X-Men: Mutant Academy.

Has anyone played X-Men: Mutant Academy btw?

The character select screen music makes my ears bleed alright. I think they were just following the music trend at the time, the electronic stuff was getting a lot harsher.

The game itself is quite good though. Especially if you play Bare Knuckle 3 and not the neutered version we got here.

Streets of Rage 1 has by far the best music, but the sprite animation isn't the best. There just aren't enough frames of animation to each character. They really fixed that with SOR 2 though. The game looks beautiful. Would love to see SOR 1 remade with the SOR engine.

I've never actually played through Resident Evil completely. My first game in that series was RE2. Must pick it up and give it a proper play through.

Never played Mutant Academy. Any good?

Wasn't Mutant Academy not brilliant but decent and far better than a license had any right to be?

I was always wondering why the music in the SoR games seemed like it should be running at a higher tempo until I found out about the horrors of PAL gaming in an issue of Superplay.

You really should play Resident Evil 1, it's completely different to the rest of the series. From Resi 2 onwards the series has been very action orientated while Resi 1 really was about choosing the safest route through the mansion and saving on ammo. Resi Remake on the Gamecube is also well worth playing and different enough from the original that it's worht playing both games.

SOR 2 was by far the best, yeah agreed it was too easy. That can be fixed by using the cheat code to up to difficulty to very hard. (hold a +b on control 2 while going into options.) The music, and characters were the best of the game. max is cool.

SOR 3 was good but the music was not as good and it just seemed overall very alike SOR2. Not the vast improvement that was SOR2 over SOR1

You know, the one thing I hated about the SOR series of games was there simply wasn't enough of them, I mean how about SOR4 or even 5 on all the formats, they're so great, even my dog loves them!

Only kidding, Streets of Rage games suck!

Sucked in your personal opinion of course. Everybody has at least one well liked game that they just don't like.

Me? I hate mario brothers games. thought they were boring compared to other platformers. Doesn't mean I think they are bad games, they are not. Just means I find them boring.

Actually that gives me a thought. Peple like bad films sometimes, as in so bad it's good, but almost never bad games.

Does anybody like bad retro games, in a so bad it's good way?

Me I love to play rise of the robot. Yeah its S**** but still fun.

Yeah, Streets of Rage, just love it, because it's really sh1te!

And Justbrian, Mario Bros games are "boring"?

You're going to find it hard to get along in these parts, I mean slagging off Streets of Rage and GoldenAxe aside, it's hard to pick any faults at all with the likes of Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World, beautifully made, constantly inventive, I mean boring compared to what exactly?
Or do you mean Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy/2 are boring?
A few particular 2D fiends may agree with you, but each of those games represents the zenith of 3D platforming in their respective generations (not SMG/SMG2 as they were in the same gen, of course, d'oh!).
To paraphrase Douglas Adams, when you're bored with Mario games, you're bored with life.

Perhaps you should subject yourself to Shadow the Hedgehog and Bubsy the Bobcat to remind yourself how awful the world is when Mario isn't the star of the game!

And name one stinker that I liked that no one else did, and Halo doesn't count, because the rest if the planet loves them too!

    Woohoo!

Mario games are boring in that I don't enjoy them. Not in any way, shape or form bad games.

Then again I always was a sega (read sonic) man.

Hmm, games I love because they are crap? Not sure there's anything that I like that way. I heard a lot of people love Night Trap for this reason.

The only game that comes close is Global Defence Force and Earth Defence Force 2017. However both of those games despite having awful production values and crappy visuals are both amazing fun and the cheapness only adds to the charm.
