Lashed the GNET back into a cab last night and gave Psyvariar (original version, not the revision) a proper blast for the first time.

Have played many a bullet hell game in my time, but my christ, this has to be up there with some of the most complex patterns/versus hitbox size. The ship doesn't have that 'tiny, I'll dodge through rain' feeling that the likes of Cave shmups have.

That's why I can't get another GNet, many of the games worth playing require a Tated monitor and it's just too bloody awkward to do that on the AWSD and swap it back.
    Bugger!
I'll have to get another cab!

Hmm might just keep my Gnet so and look into modding it. Price of genuine cards is a bit high for me.

I one credited Psyvariar the first time I played it on PS2. Can't ****ing do it anymore. It was totally bizarre that I managed it.

Ebay can be handy enough for them, people don't tend to bid at all as everyone has flashed mobos :D

Are you sure you didn't just have a seizure from all the colours/booming techno and complete it in your mind while on the floor in convulsions?

That's one amazing feat if you did that, fair play.

Never been able to do it again. I think I just had the equivalent of winning the lottery when I played it and got lucky with the level up invincibility :)

Just saw a converted Mushi King for sale over on J+ (unfortunately it's sold!)

Good comparison shot beside a 29incher - I'd say you'd fit one of them up that spiral staircase :)

You'd need small girlie hands and to be about 4 foot tall to play on that thing

No comment on the 'girlie hands' remark but there is a chair to sit on... ;)

What would bother me though is the screen size, looks too small. What is that, 17/19 inches??

Far smaller than that, 14 inches! :D

Definitely not 'main cab' material, but nice for a 2nd/3rd cab option if space is tight.

I might make a project of building a cab for the gamesroom, use a CRT or, maybe just maybe, the SD monitor I have that looks a treat with retro inputs.
Might be more cost effective than the mortgage mini cabs typically cost!

Digging the Xbox 360 mode on DoDonPachi SaiDaiOuJou. It's another brilliant arrange mode for Cave 360 releases, more accessible and inventive than the core game. The interesting factor here is that health, bombs and 'ShotLaser' are all tied to one energy bar, that counts down from 10,000. It becomes a fun balancing act between survival and score-chasing. You can use the 'ShotLaser' (i.e. press the shot and laser buttons at the same time :pac:) to rapidly build up your important hyper attacks levels, but it quickly drains your gauge and means you're at risk of death (you auto-bomb when shot, but you need at least 2,000 energy for it to work - technically you have infinite lives as long as you keep the gauge above 2,000 at all times). However, activate your hyper and you can recharge your gauge by defeating enemies. The risk-reward aspect comes as you can build up your hyper gauge to ten different levels. Higher level ones give you the best recharges and scores, but require copious use of ShotLaser to build them up and hence means you're more and more at risk of death. The dynamic of deciding whether to take a risk for seriously high scores or to focus on surviving is really interesting.

It sounds complicated, but is actually beautifully engineered and a whole lot of fun. It always impresses me how many unusual, obsessively specific score attack modes those folk at Cave manage to come up with. So many creative variations on a core formula.

I was looking at that Dodonpachi game on eBay, seems quite reasonable to me.
Is that the best place to pick it up or is there better value to be had out there for region free Cave goodness?

Speaking of Playasia JU, what's the story with the Resi Re-remake over here in PAL land? Will it definitely be a digital release only over here? I see Playasia have a Japanese version up for pre-order which actually has both English & Japanese languages...

I think it's still up in the air about physical release over here. I haven't been following it that closely though because I don't think the world needs another frickin' version of that game :p

Beat Kenka Bancho at the weekend. Narratively speaking it might just be a masterpiece.

The game starts with a protagonist that thinks he is the toughest bancho in Japan. He is on a school trip to one of the most beautiful places in the world, Kyoto. Instead of taking in the wonderful culture and sights of this city he decide his time is better spent running around, beating the crap out of other banchos around the country to confirm e is indeed the toughest in Japan. He also has three women that are crazy about him and he ignores, dismisses and treats like **** and yet still gets to choose one as his girlfriend at the end of the game (and then acts totally uninterested and nonchalantly). At the end of the game the protagonist confirms he's a bad ass just like he has always known and hasn't developed at all as a character. The fact that he has zero character development is either subversion at its most genius or just Japanese wackiness at work.

The game is a load of silly fun despite not exactly being well made.

It's absolutely tiny and you'd assume (like me) that it's a component on the PCB

See the tiny white square in the top right beside the sd slot?
