Cult Films

I have only just finished watching Dark City today and I really enjoyed it. Just wondering if anyone could recommend some films that have a cultfollowing of a similiar level e.g. Cube, Blade Runner, Donnie Darko... I need more fixes of cult classics. I still cannot get over that it took this long for me to become aware of Dark City and to finally view it.

    Cheers,

    Owlwink.

I'm more interested in weird sci-fi stuff like Brazil andthe likes. Some films from that time are so underestimated it is ridiculous.

Hmm.. You liked Dark City, how about Brazil.

Be careful which version you get your hands on, like Dark City, it's a film that was fiddled with a lot, against the wishes of the director..

I have seen multiple versions of Brazil. The Director's cut is by far the best.

Deliverance( 1972) with Burt Reynolds .

He went on to star in comedy films but this was him in a rare but serious film role

Was controversial for it's time and has since become a film classic

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,333 ✭✭✭jonnyfingers

"2001: A Space Odyssey" if you haven't seen it. "Equilibrium" is also worth a watch.

I love the old Arnie Sci Fi films like "Total Recall" and "The Running Man".

For true cult movies, but not sci fi, have a look at "The Blues Brothers" and "The Rocky Horror Picture" show. Both have a huge following and numerous screenings full of crazed fans in America every year!

Whenever I think of Deliverance I almost immediately start thinking of Straw Dogs and The Wicker Man (original) afterwards. I suppose they do all have the strange country folk vibe going on. All of them definitely worth a watch though. The remake of The Wicker Man is a abomination though.

Dark Star, not to everyone's taste, but it is a cult classic.

I would have to agree with you on that. Japanese cult cinema is something I know alot about as I did my thesis on it.

Casshern and Tetsuo Body Hammer are also absolutely amazing.
    Anything by Takashi Miike...

Also the South Korean film Save the Green Planet is unbelievable.

    Straw Dogs.

Again, careful which version you view first. Bodged, fiddled with and banned for ages over here.

The rape and violence scenes in Straw Dogs was pretty heavy and the film was banned from tv showing because of them . Clockwork Orange , another Stanley Kubick cult film was also off tv screens for many years for same reasons .

+1 for "Scanners". Great movie. One with a similar name I saw years ago still sticks in my mind today. It's called "Screamers". Would love to see it. It's not great but is typical 90's sci fi.

I always get Scanners and Videodrome mixed up.

Anyway, give Videodrome a go, the effects have aged, but the mood of the film is as potent as ever, if a tad cheddary.

Not sure if it's technically cult, well maybe, the experiment, german film, it's excellent, see it now coz apparently they're gonna destroy it by doin an American remake
ditto for let the right one in, best film I've seen this year

Will check it out. Let the Right One In is an excellent piece of film making a gave me a much needed alternative to the vampire genre, aesthetic and feel wise anyway.

Dark Star mentioned by Amalgam earlier on in the thread is apparently John Carpenters first film. That might be worth a look if you havent already seen it.

This one was banned for years, the people involved tried to get their names taken from the credits etc etc, there are about 6 different versions of it and it still shocks no matter which one you watch....CALIGUA.
You'll never look at Peter O'Toole in the same light again.

    Repo man.

    Sortof a small cult following.

Cult.. not sure if it is gold plated cult. An odd beast, probably dated now, made by Ken Russell of all people.

Battle Royale is a good pick. Also Boondock Saints.

hmm... I'd recommend "Naked Lunch" from 91. Screamers is good also.

Also check out Lifepod from 93, Village of the damned from 95 and The Arrival from 96.

Also watch "the forgotten" from 2004. I watched it knowing nothing about it and thought it was excellent. Although it you read any reviews of it or watch any trailers for it it will be ruined.

I suppose Crash could go alongside Naked Lunch.

Unsure of it's cult status but my god what a movie, brutal, stunning, tearful and violent.

    A tale of two sisters
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0430659/
Please god don't subject yourself to the american version 'the uninvited'

    Chopper

    One word, FANTASTIC!

The DVD extra audio track is great for Chopper. Dialogue by the producers of the film. There's also a little documentary\footage of the man the film is based on.

    Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker.

    http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1043378-stalker/

Quite a slow set visual film, much in feel to Let The Right One In. Unsettling and slow. It reaches for some pretty high brow ideas without alienating or patronising the viewer.
