The Seventh annual Irish Classic Poker Festival returns to Cork this August

News of one of the first big, post Vegas, summer festivals now as the very popular Irish Poker Classic is back. Last year Rob Taylor walked away with the spoils and this year it looks like it is going to be a credit crunch busting affair. The deep stack (20,000 stack with 75 minute blinds) main event has a reduced buy-in of €1000+€100 this year but is still guaranteeing €100,000 in the prize pool.

The venue is once again the Macau Sporting Club in Cork which is currently holding €50+€5 and €100+€10 rebuy satellites to the main event every Thursday. Online satellites to the main event will be announced soon on a number of poker networks.

Last year 169 players including Annette Obrestad made it to the festival and this year they are expecting even more.

Ken Corkery, tournament coordinator, said, "Last year saw record numbers at the festival, including overseas players, and with the reduced buy in this year designed to combat recessionary woes we're confident we can make the festival even bigger and better."

The full schedule looks like this:

    Aug. 10 Mega super satellite no-limit hold'em freezeout €100 +€10
    Aug. 11 PLO €200 + €20 with 2 re-buys/1 re-buy or 1 Add-on
    Aug. 11 Ladies event no-limit hold'em freezeout €100 + €10
    Aug. 12 Mega super satellite 1 re-buy or 1 add-on at €50 - €100 + €10
    Aug. 13 Day 1A €100,000 guaranteed main event freezeout €1,000 + €100
    Aug. 15 €250 + €25 charity event no-limit Texas hold'em freezeout €250 + €25
    Aug. 16 €200 + €20 pub challenge no-limit Texas hold'em freezeout €200 + €20

Hows does a tournament that has the same reg for a 50% reduced buyin claim to be "credit crunching" ?

So in effect you have raised your profit margin by 50%

Any chance of an answer outlining your justifications for doing this. ( And even though you didn't make the original post it was copied from your website )

Played this last year and will this year too by far the nicest poker room in ireland.
the food was free and excellent too and accomadation got through the macou was good
also a free lift in a mini bus everynight was a nice
touch even if the driver was as mad as a bag of cats
hopefully can last longer than 3 levels this time.

So in effect you have raised your profit margin by 50%

the costs of running a 3 or 4 day tournament stay the same (ie fixed), no matter how big/small the buy-in is - it has not changed the profit margin at all

€100 reg fee for a tournament with a structure as good as this is more than fair

imo the macau were very generous last year at only charging €100 reg when most clubs would have obviously charged 1500 +150

I'd like the Organ Grinders view......

    Not the monkeys.

Poker tournament profits are based on a % of the prize funds generated. If you change this by 50% your profit margin goes up.. FACT

By your logic the IPO should be €200 + €100 reg

I know outside catering, venue hire can be quite dear for other operators but these costs don't apply in this case.

The only extra over for this tournament from the normal day to day overheads are the cost of supplying 10 to 15 more dealers.

It's still disingenuous to be claiming you are cutting a people a recession busting deal while in fact raising your margins by 50%

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,656 ✭✭✭dannydiamond

Lol here we go again, leave it out you tw@ts, the festivals in the Macau are highlights on the poker calender in this country and it's the same crap from the same people every time.
I'm looking forward to this, best of luck with the weekend Ken, I'm sure it'll be a huge success as always.

To be fair Kevin there is no comparison in the value you get for the reg fee when you take into account the spread that is put on daily in the buffets. The quality of the food is good and free wine, beer and dessert also. There is no other festival that provides this quality of food and drink throughout the week.Btw the buffets are available to every one in the club so they are providing food and drink for up to 250 plyers daily at a conservative estimate.

When did 10% reg fees become an issue

    They haven't

Except when they get "reduced" from 6.67% in a cost cutting exercise for the benefit of the players
When people who dont like the Macau, have nothing better to say!:D

As usual I hear the sound of an idea whistling through your rapidly receding hairline :rolleyes:
Lol here we go again, leave it out you tw@ts, the festivals in the Macau are highlights on the poker calender in this country and it's the same crap from the same people every time.
I'm looking forward to this, best of luck with the weekend Ken, I'm sure it'll be a huge success as always.

Not disputing this but are they now exempt from answering questions.

A simple answer from the organiser would suffice and I'm sure he's well able to answer it himself

Just a thought. Ive noticed ken got banned lately for some things that were said in the heat of the moment. However each and every time he posts, the same names are on here stirring sh#t and provoking a reaction without ever being repremanded, i think the mods should be looking at these same names over and over and maybe checking ip add???.....

eh, you might notice I gave a ban earlier on this thread. I did of course check the IP of that user.

The other questions asked (mostly by deep throat) were phrased in a reasonable manner, so I have no problem with them.

The norm on boards is to report a post and/or PM the mods if something concerns you. Questioning it on the thread can just cause the thread to go off topic. Anyway I hope I have answered your query above so lets not try and drag this thread any more off topic. If you have any further concerns feel free to PM me.

With the increased time clock to 75 minutes and increase in stack size (?) this tournament will take a much longer period of time to run out. The labour costs increase for this compared to last year, on top of the previously mentioned very good lay-out of food, make the 100 reg fee very understandable.
Also, the guarantee remaining the same even though the buy in has been reduced by 33% is ballsy by the organizers, and is something that should also be taken into consideration.

DeepThroat, you talk of the Macau getting a higher profit through this amount of reg fee . . . Its a well known fact that tournaments are a break even venture at best, and that they actually only make any sort of decent money off the cash games which follow.

Good luck with the event Ken,

    Donal

Thanks Ken. Staying out of it is best. There is one question to answer though that was put reasonably.
Hows does a tournament that has the same reg for a 50% reduced buyin claim to be "credit crunching" ?

I'm sure its pretty easy for you to answer, and in fact in my view has already been answered by others on this thread, but needs to come from the organiser.

I'd like to say to all posters on this thread, that this will mark the end of the matter and after Ken has given his reasons, this thread is to remain on topic and for discussion of the event only, its onlyl fair to the club and the interested players. This is NOT going to turn into yet another petty arguement filled Cork thread. I will be fairly liberal with el banhammer if it does.

Jesus Ken, what kind of a concencration camp are you running down there in Cork !! I hope you are paying Bops PRSI!! Good luck with the game will be down myself, Super sattelite in the Atlantis casino in Carlow on Friday Aug 7th, €100 freeze-out two main event tix guaranteed. Cheers Mike

The 'credit crunching' quote is clearly mis interpreted.

The original post from Ken said that the entry was 'credit crunch busting', and I take this to mean that the overall cost to the punter is reduced by €500. To focus on the reg fee remaining the same when the entry is reduced is, to me, rather strange. Either the €1,100 is good, or it's bad. One or the other.

And before anyone starts, I'm not playing unless I win big in the Omaha at the festival so I have no stake in this one way or the other.

if it been answered why does ken need to answer it again and if 10% reg was high then every tourie in ireland are charging the wrong reg . i think u gone over your mod job here . the guy who asking this question should know the answer well .he wont be here to play anyway

Its the price of having free advertising on Boards for tournament promoters as the forum rules state
In addition to the information contained above, anyone availing of this board to promote their tournaments are expected to answer all questions that are relevant, civil and politely put to them regarding their tournaments and the club policies in general.

Now as I mentioned earlier, I believe some posters have already given a pretty decent answer, but it needs to come from the organiser. I have banned 2 people on this thread for not being civil, so its not a case of me taking sides with any of the Cork 'factions'.

If you have any issues with the rules (which are set up to benefit players btw) or how this forum is run, I suggest starting a thread in the feedback forum and not to drag threads on here further off topic. Thanks

    Hi Kev,

For every year we have offered the cheapest reg in the country.

So as the event is now 4 days long having to provide extra staff give a good buffet for all the players daily and of course make a few bob.

Thats why the reg is €100.

    Regards,
    Ken.
