We got NTL installed just over a week ago and this start happening straight away, we thought it was just the remote control so got them to send another one, channels still randomly changing and mute symbol appearing.

Anyone any ideas what this issue is? It's so annoying

If it is the Thomson silver DVR some lights may interfere with the remote IR sensor on the box.

This has started for me over the past couple of days. I've replaced the batteries in the remote abd restarted the box a couple of times.

Do I have to get ntl or upc for whatever they are calling themselves this week, and get a replacement digibox?

Same for me :( Anyone ever get if fixed by UPC or did it just fix itself eventually? I have two UPC boxes and its only one of them that is having the problem which makes it even weirder. Takes AGES to change channel and menu doesnt work properly.

This seems to be a common issue! The OH has digital with UPC and the "skipping" seems to be becoming more and more frequent.. in dublin 9 btw.

In Dublin 9 as well and had terrible trouble with the responsiveness of the remote and the HD box.
I actually bought a one-for-all remote (16 euro) and programmed it for the UPC box, DVD player and Blu Ray player. Haven't looked back since. I'm assuming the IR signal from the OFA remote is stronger than the UPC remote.

Thats interesting to know. I wonder has anyone else tried this.

So it actually just be the remote that's crap?

No. You can press the remote a few times and you have to wait for the box to catch up.

I really don't know why the OFA remote is working better than the UPC one. It's just working and the box is responding to it in proper time.
TO be honest I just took a punt and thought it would be handy not to have so many remotes knocking about the place and continuously having to search for them.
The major bonus is the way it responds to the UPC HD media box.

Just in case anyone else has this problem. Had UPC tech support out. Apparently there is a really weird issue going on where some tvs (Samsung, LG) are interfering with the signal from the UPC remote. I know it sounds strange but that's definately what was happening as putting the TV on standby causes the remote to start responding again immediately (you can see the channel changing on the box :)

They replaced my new-style box with an old-style one and its working fine again now except I have the crappy old EPG etc. Support guy said they will be trying to fix this in the future using a software upgrade.

The UPC box is crap anyway, not just with the remote control responsiveness. The rewind / forward is crap, it's hard to go back just 10 seconds. Sound goes out of sync. It fails to record some shows (rare enough), but it does not account for +/- 5 mins start end of show. Menus are slow. Compared to the Sky+ box, the UPC box is a piece of @#*%!

That is interesting as I have the same problem and have a Samsung.

Try and browse up and down the channels with the prog + and prog - buttons. Then put the tv to standby and look at the box to see if the channels are moving now....
If you have a fairly new UPC box then thats your problem. They should switch it for you if you give them a ring, explain the issue, they know about it already.

My old silver box takes 2-3 seconds to go from black screen to picture when changing channels.

It slowed down dramatically when I changed to the new card re the improved encryption.

Smaller box is not as bad but is still slow

All combinations of UPC/NTL boxes that I've tried over the years seem slow to me.

    +3..Confirmed !

Definitely something going on with UPC PACE STB and Samsung LCD TV.
Turn off your TV and the STB flys through the channels , switch it on (tv) remote not responsive again .

Another Thread suggested covering the IR receiver on the STB with a piece of masking tape (not insulating tape) .
This allows the remote IR signal in , but blocks out IR interference/flooding from TV.

    Anyone confirm results ?

I called them and they told me to move the box "back away from the tv as the infared from the telly effects the box."
sounds like b*******Y to me but i gave it a go and i think it might of done something but im probably only imagining it.
    :pac:.........:pac:

its not the remote. I have a new box and i reset it to factory settengs using first of all pin 0000 and then pin 131 for dublin and it works perfect now. well faster anyway. somebody else suggested this and it worked for them so before you try anything else give it a go. you dont lose any of your recordings!:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

I have UPC Digital+ Max on mmds for the past month & I must say that I have had no problems at all. My Sky sub runs out this wk/end and I for one have found practically no difference with Sky. Remote is working just as good as the Sky one. Reading these threads, though, have made me wary that there'as something round the corner.:):)

Had a few odd episodes today. Turning the volume up changed the channel to the UPC one, fast fowarding a recording would freeze the box, pausing a recording would fast foward 2x, and pressing the guide button would turn the box off. Also, Euronews is now the default channel that comes up when I power up the box. Last week it was Boomerang. I have never watched either channel.

That exact same thing happens to me.

Sometimes I press any button on the remote, and it'll press a random number which flicks me off my channel. This can be quite annoying if you paused something and come back to it, and you go to turn the volume up and it changes channel on you. Then you've missed a huge chunk of whatever you were looking at and you can't rewind if you flick channels obviously.

Same thing happens with the crashing of the STB. Sometimes when fast forwarding/rewinding, the video just freezes and the box crashes.
Only fix was to restart the box.

    VERY annoying.

Same issue here in D24. Have a black UPC branded PVR box. In the settings it says it THOMSON with hardware version 6221UPC, S/W version 3.8.0692 and bootloader 01.11.01.10

It really is poor. Compared to the old silver NTL box in another room it is slow, so its not the signal etc..

Is there a new S/W ??? or simply a hardware issue?

My remote or box is haywire at the moment. Picture us freezing, press the arrows a couple of times to browse what's on and it can go thru 5 or 6 channels. Hit ok to select the channel you want and chances are it's taken you to the wrong channel. When using the remote it'll suddenly show a 5 and then go to the info channel. Driving me nuts!! Are others still having issues?

Came back from holiday a few weeks ago and navigation was just terrible. I tried the below suggestion and it worked a treat. Thx for the post

Wow! What a mess. Similar problems, the remote, when changing channels, I hear the info channel for a split second, then ok. But sometimes misses the selected channel, when manually selected. E.G BBC 1 is 108, usually get 100.
Also have earlier brought up problem with the sync of sound via a modern hi fi. Sound way ahead of picture. Really maddening.
What is the code/pin for factory re-set for Limerick? Anyone any idea? Have a tech friend coming over later, works in TV's so might be able to help. Box (Media), only put in on Tuesday.

We're having the problems with the two boxes and its driving us nuts in the house and some of the programmes arent doing the Season Link

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44 cairnrua

What's going on? How many other people are having these problems, U wonder! Was down at a Panasonic shop today, and the guy suggested to try by connecting the phono lead directly from back of TV to hi fi. So did just that, and alas still no joy. Has to be something wrong either with the boxes, or the boxes and their poor ability to interact with all TV's. What kind of TV do you have!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 454 ✭✭dublinbusdude

Both TVs arent HD, they are SD TVs. The Boxes seems to freeze or turn off and on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44 cairnrua

So, even with the tv's you have - you get same thing! Was it since you changed boxes from the old grey ones to newer silver Pace ones? Have you tried to get any tech advice from UPC, as am going to see what they saw. But reading other posts - it seems they are not too sure either.
Maybe we all should go nationwide on the radio and see can someone put the situation right. Either these Mediaboxes are up to scratch or not. Any other more technical guys out there able to cast a bit of light on the problem?

This one and all we do is to turn it off by the remote and turn it back on or turn it off by the back of the box
