NTL very slow to navigate and change channel

A few days ago my ntl just got really really slow. When you press ok and go left or right to see what is on the other channels, it takes 1-2 (sometimes more) seconds to change. Sometimes it stalls and you press buttons but they try to catch up and it goes nuts. Also when it does go to the new channel, the picture shows but it takes a few seconds for the sound to come on.

Has this happened to anyone else? I will call ntl when I have 3 hours free to wait on hold, but until then, any suggestions?

yeah mines the same and sometimes the sound is way behind the action on the recordings, the other half rang them yesterday about the bill and it took maybe 5 minutes to get through to an operator, the operator was Irish which helped.

I've the same problem. It only started a few days ago and it's quite annoying. At first, I thought it was the remote so I replaced the batteries but it didn't make any difference. It will still try to execute a few commands all at once and then, in its confuzzled and confusted state, it switches itself off.

The picture is also... skipping? I can't describe it any other way. It's just like watching a dud DVD. Everything is fine and then, all of a sudden, there's a skip. It might pause for a split second or it will advance about two seconds. I've almost become used to rewinding live TV at this point. Strange that when I do this, the picture is fine and there is no skip.

I can't help thinking that this is somehow connected with the new UPC card and "upgraded" system. If I feel like wasting an hour or two tomorrow, I'll give them a buzz. I'll do a hard rest now too.

Same here also. Started happening right after the series link was launched. Let me know if the hard reset works.

It did some weird things last night, just as I was beginning to watch a program, it did some updating thing and turned off for 15 mins grrrrr. When it came back on the menu did not work. It did it all again 20 mins later. Seemed ok after that, hope it lasts!

Nah - the hard reset didn't do anything. I rang them (only waited about 5 mins to get through) and they said there is upgrading going on in the area (D14). Once that finishes, the issues should resolve. Apparently they're due to finish up around here over the next few days.

I"ll give a few days and see what happens. The skipping picture / audio is quite bad today - driving me mad.

I am also getting this "skipping" issue. Sometimes the picture skips only and the sound stays normal. Rebooting the box makes no difference. Glad to hear other plp have same problem. I thought it might have just been my dvr..

I've been having the slow menu response for a good few days now and it's wrecking my head!! The whole skipping thing has only happened on recordings and not live tv thankfully. I'm D7 btw. How did you guys get on? Any better?

Mine fixed itself a few days after and has been grand since. But Having played with Sky+ the other day, it beats the pants off NTL. I hate the wway when you press menu it takes a fwe seconds and the sound goes on and off. Getting into and using the DVR is more complicated than necessary really

Mine was very bad last night so I restart the box and things improved dramatically. Not sure how long that will last though. I do get the skipping on live programs but that too clear after the restart.

I think there is a big problem with the box since the series link went active. Its either performance problems (the hardware just can't handle the load) or the changes introduced a lot of instability.

Either way if it continues I will have NTL replace it and keep replacing it until they fix the problem - I know replacing the box won't fix it but changing out the box every week is going to hurt NTL just a little bit.

On 3.7.8.3 on my new mini DVR box, If I type a channel in or press any number the picture and sound freezes, but that seems to be because it is loading "Info TV" which comes on autoamatically.

It's ok when browsing through channels though, and scrolling through, only like this when typing the channel number in manually.

This seems to be a common issue! The OH has digital with UPC and the "skipping" seems to be becoming more and more frequent.. in dublin 9 btw.

I *think* the skipping issue has resolved itself. It certainly is not as pronounced as it was. Instead, I get a nano-second of pixellation and then it's fine. I've been watching a lot of recorded stuff (series linking QI was a great idea in theory until it filled the box up with 2 hours every day) and I didn't notice any skipping this week at all.

On live TV, I still get a teeny tiny skip but it looks like bad reception more than anything else. I think it was Wednesday, the reception went completely for about an hour.

I also think the box & remote issue has been resolved. Still slow to open the Guide or Menu and it really hates a slow rewind (will switch itself off) but otherwise... an improvement.

im in galway with the upc media box.

constantly skipping a very slow to move channels. as mentioned sometimes it totally stops responding the then catches up with all the channels at once.

restarting the box helps the speed issue a bit.

My advice too all of ye is get Sky+HD it's in a different league to the + boxes from UPC.

They switched to Nagra3 recently, and it is possible that on the old boxes, it takes somewhat longer to decode an encrypted stream because Nagra3 is a much more complicated algorithm than Nagra2.

I've had problems for months now (ever since I got their Digital+ box)
The channels can be slow to navagate and the mini EPG slow to clear. I need to plug out the box and plug it back in again to fix the problems... then they come back a few day later.
I just haven't got the energy to talk to them over the phone (UPC customer service really grinds you down!), so i'm living with it for the moment.

Having a few problems with UPC too over the past week or 2.
Big mute symbol appearing on screen and the channel changing by itself yesterday!

Had some problems with DVR recording timing/schedule and series link.

Rang customer service, said they'd call me back asap. got return call 2 days later. I was away but said Im be available 1st thing next morning ... that was last Friday

Oh I love the random changing of channels. Mine does that all the time. I've my PVR 2 years now. It's in bits. The LED doesn't even work on the front. UPC said they would replace, but I've some 80% of the hard drive full of shows I want to keep. They really need to figure out a way to transfer the hard drive contents.

Burn it off to DVD if you really want to keep it. Hard drives fail, so you could lose it all in a second anyway...

My problem is back worse than ever. Takes 10-15 seconds to even navigate between channels on the menu.

Anyone solve this? Can ntl do anything?

Guys how do you reset the ntl box? Is it "Restore Favtory Settings"? It says you need an activation code, what is this?

    Do you loose your recordings?

You could ring them and demand they send out new equipment and do a full connection check.
Think you may need to threaten to cancel your subscription to give them a push!

Restore factory settings....activation code is 131 for Dublin cable....follow on screen instructions, pressing the OK button will move you though each step...no you won't lose any recordings.

edit:After this process you'll notice subtitles on certain channels coming on screen. To turn these off go to preference settings, change subtitle option to off and press OK to store and exit.

    Hi

How do you burn it off to DVD?
    Trying to figure it out.
It seems the usb connection at the back is future proofing - doesn't actually work for anything at the moment.

    Thanks!

We got NTL installed just over a week ago and this start happening straight away, we thought it was just the remote control so got them to send another one, channels still randomly changing and mute symbol appearing.

Anyone any ideas what this issue is? It's so annoying
