Ok so if this has already been done loads feel free to just delete it!

I noticed a few threads popping up about veet etc so I thought why not just have a thread where we can discuss all fuzz issues!!

Trying to stay smooth is the bain of my life!! I should never have shaved to begin with as judging by my arms (almost totally hairless) I would have been grand. But I was young and thought it was grown-up to shave your legs!!

I find Veet useless...and usually have to shave after using it to get rid of the last bits of stubble.

I'm a wuss so have yet to venture into the world of epilators and waxing...would love to get courage to get waxed!!

I find I have to shave every 2nd day if i want to stay smooth...what about you all? What works? What sucks? And how long do you stay fuzz free inbetween??

Shaving makes absolutely no difference to the thickness of hair over time.
    This is an urban myth.
Regardless of whether you shaved or not, you would still be in the same predicament.

Yeah but it's the stubbly bit that is horrible a day or so after shaving. Those super smooth tv legs are the result of wax yeah? Thinbk it's time I sucked it up and went for a wax!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 737 ✭✭✭Morgase

Waxing is expensive if you get it done in a salon (as opposed to DIY) but I think it's excellent. I'm a bit of a furry bear but I'd get about 4 weeks happiness out of it.

TV smooth legs don't exist I am sure of it; they must be airbrushed.

Myself, I am getting legs AND arms waxed on Monday cause I'm going on holidays and I have a bit of hair paranoia. Everyone tells me I don't need to but it makes me feel better!

veet altho only last a a few days is the only thing , can you believe that doesnt irriate my skin! so i soldier on with that !

I used to shave, then I tried those silkymits - now not the expensive JML ones - the cheapo ones you used to get in boots for about a pound - they're brilliant.

Then I started getting waxed and in between shaving, so then by the time my legs were hairy enough to wax it was really bad and painful. So, now, I wax my own legs, if you keep on top of it its soooo easy.

I thought there would be no way I could do it but then the recession hit and it costs a tenner for a packet of veet strips so I thought - feck that!

I'll still get my bikini done by the pros though!

My armpits: shave every day/every other day
    My arms: don't touch
My legs: In the summer, shave every other day/every second day (in the winter, look out)
My Lady Garden: wax as often as needed; stays hair free for about three weeks (and then it has to grow back enough to re-wax)

    I stay away from:
    -Veet/Nair/any hair removal cream
-any do-it-yourself waxing thingy. Since I only wax my nether regions, I'd definitely rather leave it to the pros!

Waxing is definitely the best. I only need to go about every 4/5 weeks! And seriously the pain isn't that bad....it really isn't!

How long does your leg & bikini hair have to be for waxing?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 27,754 Mod ✭✭✭✭Posy

I've seen arms mentioned a bit on the forum.. is it a common thing for girls to wax/shave their arms?
I epilate my armpits (nearly DIED with pain the first time, now it's easy as pie) I epilate my legs (same as arms!) and use a trimmer and electric shaver to keep my 'down below' under control.
But, despite having quite hairy arms, I'd never shave them- it'd just add more feckin' grooming to have to do!! Do a lot of loungers shave their arms?

You would want it to be a good 5mm long for the wax to get a grip on the hair I'd say.

I do but any woman I've ever spoken to in non-internetty life doesn't. I was talking about it today with some women and they couldn't understand why I was doing it. So don't bother with waxing them unless you're a big paranoid weirdo like me!

Im a shaver at the mo, contemplating venturing into the world of waxing  Do ye all shave/wax over the knee? I have fair hair but noticeable all the same.. And like you OP, I get about a day out of shaving :( And iv a permanent rash under my arms from shaving.. grrr  Would waxing not make this worse??

I have dark hair, and it's (obviously) dark on my arms as well. I've never shaved, but when I was younger I used to use a cream to bleach the color of the hair on my arms. One time I left it on too long and my arm hair ended up blonde. I looked absolutely ridiculous and have never touched my arm hair since.

    True story!

Wax eyebrows and underarms and shave legs and trim the bikini area... I am blessed to be blonde and pretty hairless except on my head

I do, wouldn't be as fussey about it as legs/bikini though. Arms are on show a lot of the time in the summer, not all the time due to Irish climate:)

I don't know what other peoples experiences have been with epilators but I would stay well clear! Bought one 5 years ago, used on bikini line and have have ingrown hairs there ever since. :(

I've never waxed or shaved them, but I do epilate them the odd time - maybe every couple of months. I get about a month out of it each time, and the regrowth is really unnoticable - I actually think it grows back lighter too. Any time I've waxed my legs, I never noticed it growing back any lighter even though it's supposed to.

A glass of wine beforehand really helps with the pain ;)

Yeah, as I said it's good on my arms - maybe because I never tried any other form of hair removal there? But it's absolutely rubbish on my legs (takes forever and doesn't even get half the hairs) and when I tried my underarms and bikini area the pain was actually excruciating! That could be because I've fairly thick hair growth though.

I got my legs waxed a few months ago and found that a few days later the usual stubble grew again, then I just had a slight horrible feeling stubble over my legs for the next month and put off shaving it - not wanting to waste the money from the wax!

Is that normal for stubble to grow so soon after a wax?
    Was it a botch job?
I thought after a wax I'd have perfect smoothness for at least 2 weeks anyway... naive?

I'm no expert, but I think it has to do with 2 cycles of hair growth, so the 1st cycle was waxed off and you shouldn't see it until a few weeks later, the 2nd cycle started growing through - that's your stubble! ?

I don't know how you get around that problem, I sometimes have a shadow of hairs under the skin a few days after waxing, so its probably the same thing.

I go through phases of getting legs waxed, usually for summer, or if I have a wedding / party to go to. But get bored of it and the hairiness in between, so just start shaving again.
Got my underarms waxed a few times but the pain is too much to do on a regular basis  I'm sure it would ease out if I kept going back, but I couldn't face having hairy underarms all the time.
I shave my underarms every 2nd day, any sooner and I'm killed with razor burn. I shave my legs at the same time. Pluck my own eyebrows, and alternate between bikini waxing and shaving it, because its smoother for longer if you wax, but sometimes there are special occasions you just have to be clean shaven ;)

I would love to know how to have TV perfect legs & underarms, but judging from this thread it seems it doesn't exist. Must be airbrushing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 867 ✭✭✭giddybootz

Weird...2 cycles of growth you say??

Doomed to a land of stubble!! The only place blokes have to shave is thier face and even then it is acceptable to have stubble or full growth...sigh moan sigh!!

I get my eyebrows and bikini line waxed. Really not as painful as you would imagine. i always take a painkiller about 45 mins before my appointment, so I hardly feel it.

Otherwise, I shave my underarms every day all year, and my legs every day or other day during the summer and less regularly during the winter.

I would never ever touch my arms. Yes they are hairy but the hair is soft; and fairer than my other hair from being in the sun. Anyway, I knew someone at school who shaved her arms and the feeling if I brushed off her stubbly arm was a lot more disgusting than that of a hairy arm. it's rididulous!

Maybe that could be from the hair breaking at the skin level rather than being pulled out from the root (like it should be)? I think it's bad waxing technique anyway.

what is the name of that cream you can get and put on before you wax that will numb the area?

I had my bikini line waxed about three years ago. Lets just say it was the first and last time I done it. It hurt like hell first of all, secondly I had red spots all over the place when she was done; as in evry hair follicle was inflamed and red and that didn't die down for nearly two weeks (and I had the allergy test done a few days prior) and thirdly it re-grew in under a week.

I don't know if it was just a bad experience but i went to fairly big salon where i thought they would know what they were at.

Anyway now I am thinking of retrying it to see if it was just a bad exprience and I am interested in finding out what the name of that cream is? Anyone know it?

What i do now is shave my underarms and legs and use a trimmers on my bikini line. I shave both every two days or so and the legs can go undone if in a hurry and not wearing a skirt! :)

Also I used to get rash in my underarms but i just started exfoliating before i shave like I do with my legs and its fine now!I dont know if that will work for everyone but it works for me.

Maybe, although I got it done at quite a nice hotel spa.
I'll give it another try some other time when I have the money to spare!

At the moment trying to book myself a bikini for my holiday but can't get through to Waxperts which I hear is the best :( Any other places people would suggest? (Southside/Central Dublin)

I have been going to brazillia for a couple of years now for bikini wax but the last time i went i was left with really bad ingrown hairs that lasted for ages. was speaking to a friend of mine and she told me that they double dip the spatula/ wax which is really gross and dangerous and they are not supposed to do it- meant to use a new spatula stick thingy for every application of the wax to your skin. Also they don't wear gloves and i've never seen a waxer wash her hands before so definately won't be going back!

PEOPLE SHAVE THEIR ARMS????!!!!! WHY?!!!! I have never shaved my arms, or thought about it! Now I am very paranoid!

Shave my legs every few days, they're not really hairy so yay for me! Pretty much the same with my underarms, like every third day or something! Had my bikini line waxed once before, hurt like hell I thought, definitely worth it and gonna go for it again this week! Generally use an epilator though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,345 ✭✭✭SarcasticFairy

Never shaved/waxed my arms, always thought it would be really strange. My friend did it a couple of weeks ago, and her arms were hair-free (well, duh!) and reallllly soft and smooth. Kinda made me tempted to do it, but the effort that would be involved in the up-keep is just too much, so I don't think I'll bother.

I get away with murder with hair-growth in general. I've really fine fair hair, which seems to grow back extremely slowly, and even when it does start you grow back, you can't really see/notice it at all. A couple of my friends have said they could shave in the morning and have stubble by the evening time, which is just insane to me! I'd go insane putting up with that. With my legs, I'd probably get away with three/four days if I shaved them, before the lovely smooth feeling would go away, and far longer before you'd actually notice anything. I'd do under my arms maybe every other day though, because I just hate hair there.

I've yet to try an epilator though... Sounds extremely painful!

Yeah, but like... if I waxed off my eyebrows my forehead would be really soft and smooth... I still wouldn't do it though.

Hairless arms sound really creepy. Like one of those horrible hairless cats.

I've been to both but the last time was up in Sandyford. I'm now going to go to my friends (the one who told me about brazillia) waxer i think she is somewhere in Dun Laoghaire. I definitely wouldn't go back to them and i'd ask whatever salon you go to if they double dip the wax!

Not really. Legs are sexualised, hence hairlessness... arms are not. Except we shave under our arms.

It's all very confusing. Basically, shaving your arms is just odd.

Fair point, but there's a possibility I'd want hairless, smooth arms! I can't say the same for having no eyebrows! :p

I thought it'd be really weird too, but I actually didn't notice until she shoved her arm at me and said "Feel this!".

Meh, I have blonde hair on my arms anyway, so it doesn't bother me. Her hair was darker, and she was kinda conscious of it. Each to their own and all that jazz!

Hey all, just wondering what the best way to maintain the bikini line is? I shave usually but it doesn't give great results, regrowth within 24 hrs and terrible angry red ingrown hairs. Is an electric shaver any better or is the razor the best way to get that close shave?

I am a bit awkward with things like wax, I never seem to do them properly. Is there any really foolproof home wax? Veet doesn't get clean enough results for me either. I have quite fast growing dark hair. Any advice ladies?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 155 ✭✭willy wonka

God I have done everyhthing when it comes to hair removal - waxing, epilating, Veet, that sandpaper stuff, shaving, laser hair removal, hair retarding creams.

To answer the question about arm hair, I will give you my scenario. Growing up my arms were hairy and I was teased constantly about it. As a result I would rarely wear t-shirts or if I did would turn my arms in so people wouldnt see the hair. Even as a child, it was so traumatic.
So I shaved them, epilated, waxed, etc as I got older. I eventually got laser hair removal on them and now I can wear t-shirts without feeling conscious. It was a complete lease of life for me. Imagine not being able to swim or do sports as a teenager - crazy!

Looking back I dont even think they were that hairy, my leg hair is nowhere near as thick as some women's, but my Mum is hair free so I probably compared myself to her growing up.

Hey ladies, I have been debating buying an Epilator and was just wondering if anyone has any recommendations as to which ones are the best. I usually shave my legs and underarm and get my bikini line done in a beauticians. I'm sick of shaving and find the creams just don't work, are Epilators any good or just not worth the pain?

Reading some of your comments about Brazilia. I normally go there and didn't know about the 'double dipping' of the spatula etc. I normally found them very good and pretty much painless although I have never seen them wear gloves and I do get vary bad ingrown hairs which I never thought may be due to this. Thanks for pointing this out. I have been to Urban Wax before and found them very good as well although it was a long time ago so can't remember if they wear gloves or 'double dip' etc. I'd like to do my own waxing as my hair is very dark and grows back quite quickly which means it is expensive getting waxed professionally... which are the best home waxing kits?

Arm shaving? Eek..It's something I tried when I first started shaving my legs, and I remember being convinced the hair grew back thicker (altho it's blondes so it's okay)..should I be shaving my arms?? Super paranoid after reading this!

Can't bear the Veet stuff, burns burns burns and couldn't handle wax...seriously low pain threshold, me!

That's one thing I'm thankful for, my hair is really blonde and there isn't much of it so I don't have to get rid of it. Except my armpits.

I shave my armpits maybe 3 times a week.
Never shave my legs. Not much hair there, and what is there is practically invisible.
I sometimes wax my bikini line if I'm going on holidays.

Does anyone go the full monty in terms of removing hair 'down below'?

Am asking because a friend told me she shaves the southern region at least 5 times a week to ensure it's hair free and I was a little surprised to say the least!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34 chogxox

I've never shaved my arms even though I am quite dark, I just think it would look weird with no hair on my arms. If the hair really bothered me I'd probably just bleach it instead!!!!

As for down below I do get pretty much all off when I go for my waxing. Either a brazilian or basic brazilian (which leaves a little more than the brazilian). I'd never shave down there though, far too much irritation when growing back and I just think waxing is much cleaner and less chance of ingrown hairs also.

I can't shave downstairs with a razor at all, I end up looking like I have the crotch-specific-plague. Red and spotty and itchy as feck. Got myself one of these a while back

    http://www.amazon.com/Cleancut-ES412-Personal-Shaver/dp/B001IZZX1C

and it's great, you trim the hair down as far as you can with one of those beardshaver-majigs and then this buzzs off the stubble and short hairs left behind, everything feels really smooth afterwards and I don't end up with plague crotch anymore :)

armpits and legs are shaved when needed (pretty much only when they get very gross or someone's gonna see them) I get razor burn under my arms a lot so they aren't the most fun in the world to shave.

I would definitely be all for waxing. I haven't shaved my legs in 5 years and get them waxed every 5 - 6 weeks religiously. I have 5 weeks growth on my legs now and you can barely see a hair. A few around the ankles and that's it. Also, wax my bikini area and go to Urban Wax for a brazilian. Thankfully i don't suffer ingrowns. But i would definitely never go back to shaving as the long term affects of waxing definitely pay off.

    Five times a week?!?! Sheesus.

Does anyone go the full monty in terms of removing hair 'down below'?

yep but not shaved or waxed, lasered permanantly - 100% gone (not for the faint hearted)

    Others:
    - Upper Lip lasered
    - Shave armpits (but they're next on my 'laser list')
    - Shave legs (not really bothered about legs. even though the hair is dark, I'll only shave them if they're being exposed)
    - don't go near my arms and never will! I'd say arms would be pretty painless via the laser route though
    - eyebrows plucked every second day (hair is fine but dark)

It's pretty fantastic, and you can't cut yourself with it so you can get rid of hair in, shall we say, delicate areas. With a razer I was always a bit worried of cutting myself a brand new snatch
can u get them in ireland?!thks
