I haven't seen the film but I have read the book and the ending is the greatest cop out ever. Typical Jodi Picoult rubbish.

Would you put the ending in spoilers for me please?

If it's anything like the film which I assume it is then...
The younger girl was born to provide bone marrow etc for her sister with leukimia. The younger girl decides to sue her parents because she feels she hasn't got a right to her own body, she was being put through medical treatments to help her sister. She goes to court against her over protective mother. It turns out that the older sister has put the young girl up to the court case so that she can finally die. The older girl does this because she knows her mother would continue to force treatments on her to help her cancer but she knows in her heart (aww! :p) that she is ready to die.

    Hope that's sufficient. :)

    Micky....calling it a cop out isn't ruining it :P

But the ending of the book is very different - in the book,
the younger sister is killed in a car crash and the older sister gets her organs and lives.

Oh my god. Are you joking?! What a freaking cop out!!

The cop out I was referring to was
Anna, the younger girl, dies in a car crash before the verdict of the court case is given and her organs are donated to her sister who recovers from her illness. Total cop out.

Edit: beaten to the punch :) Does that bit not happen in the film?

How would you have ended it? I mean, whatever ending they give that kind of movie is probably going to be a cop out! :p

Nope not joking!! I think the film would probably have been better if I hadn't read the book first. I went to it with my boyfriend, and towards the end of the film,
the older sister was getting sicker and sicker, and saying her goodbyes, and talking about how she was ready to die, and I just kept saying to the boyfriend, "Now I know what you THINK is going to happen, but there's a big twist at the end" ... and then she died and I looked like an eejit

Nope, in the film Kate dies in the hospital with her mother beside her and there's no car crash.

They better not do a cop out ending with Harry Potter!:eek:

Now that would upset me :D

    Interesting. Does
Anna win her court case? Or does Kate die before the verdict?

In both Anna wins the court case. Campell is given power of attorney after her medical emancipation and agrees that she would've wanted Kate to have her organs.

Kate dies before the verdict but the lawyer comes to Anna after the funeral to tell her she won it.

Ah yes, sorry been a while since I've read it. The issue was that she
hadn't decided on donating the kidney yet, wasn't it?

It's actually been a while since I read the book - in the book,
did Kate ask Anna to seek medical emancipation and let her die, or did Anna do it of her own accord?

Kate asked her but in the film you only find that out near the end. Dunno about the book. Wiki says she did ask her to do it.

The last time I saw this many spoilers was in the picture thread in the modified car forums.

Ahhh, so many spoilers! I loved the book and think Jodi P is amazing but I'd say I'm gonna be a bit let down by the film. I'll know later when I see it and then I can actually read the rest of this thread!

Book is soooo good though, I cried!

I was meant to see it with my sister but I'm gonna tell her I know what happens already..this is the type of film she'd spend hours crying about.lol.:pac:

I really liked the book when i read it years ago- specially the ending.

Was really happy when i heard they were making a film, then really sad when i saw how ****e the film looked, and now even sadder that they have copped out on the ending!

    Boo for hollywood.

Read a load of jodi's other books and they were all useless!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,072 ✭✭✭SeekUp

Jodi P. comes and goes for me . . . books like Change of Heart, Plain Truth, and Perfect Match weren't bad at all -- but then again, there are ones like Second Glance, The Tenth Circle and Vanishing Acts (I used to work at a publishing house, so we had them all on hand!).

I haven't seen My Sister's Keeper, but I read the book a while back. I think it's pretty interesting to hear how they changed the ending. I have to say, in the previews, it looks very much as if it's all about the older sister, where in the book, I feel that most of the focus was on the younger sister. (But who really can tell much of anything from previews!) Generally speaking, I think books are often better than the film adaptations, but it sounds as if the movie ending is more "real."

Damn, I am reading this book at the moment, about halfway through. Cried tonnes already!!

I work in a cinema and have been seeing women in their droves coming out of this film puffy eyed and crying was really looking forward to it but couldn't help read all the spoilers!! :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 596 ✭✭✭Bonkers_xOx

Just saw it tonight and the whole cinema was in bits crying!

Tbh, the only thing that would interest me in this film is to see Sofia Vassilieva who plays Kate. She's a wonderful young actress and does a fantastic job as Ariel in Medium. I also love that she shaved her head for the role. She had amazing, really long blond hair before that.

    whats with all the spoilers...

I read the book and it was a good read
Dont know If I fancy the film though
Although I believe Cameron Diaz is great in it

I seriously dont get why people do this. Why would you want to pay to see a movie that upsets you and makes you feel down? I dont particularly want to sit in a room full of popcorn filled strangers snotting all over myself crying into a tissue and ask but wh hh hh hhyyy? Id be mortified if people saw me do that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,844 ✭✭✭shivvyban

I really want to see this and let out the inner cry baby. Went to see 'Looking for Eric' last week and was in bits over it (also realised I quite fancy Eric Cantona...I know...I know... I couldn't believe it either).

So definitely worth seeing? Will I forget my hatred for cameron diaz while watching it?

    +1!

They were talking about this movie on the radio today, saying whole cinemas of women were bawling, why would you watch something so depressing??

And, this is a serious question, why do girls like watching movies like this, crying their eyes out, when it's not real, they're just acting?

Clearly I'm not a proper girl at all.

I think that they find it OK to view a movie that will make them cry if they have not been affected in some way by the issue or general area but if they have it is a different story - so for me I am not watching the movie...it has gotten to the stage where I have to read about movies in advance to make sure that they do not cover certain topics such as cancer etc.

This is a bit off topic but do you know what? I do the same thing.

My grandmother died very suddenly of cancer at 54, the word hangs over my family like a cloud, and for years I refused to buy one particular women's magazine because *every* issue had someone's real life story of cancer, "My best friends struggle with/Cancer at 25/Cancer took my mother/sister/etc". Now, even though many of these stories are positive I just don't even want to hear about it. I like to shield myself from the awful things in the world, the mature approach, so I don't think I'll be watching it :D

Sometimes positive stories make me a bit bitter, as much as I hate to admit it.

God the whole cinema was just full of women sobbing and sniffling!!!
Thought it was a really good movie! Very very sad...:(
I'd read the book and still liked the movie so dont really think it was a cop out! :P

I've only read one Jodi Picoult book, and to be honest it was no great shakes imho.

As for going to see a sad movie and crying, I actually find that pretty theraputic - it releases a lot of built up tension from other things, the little things that you carry with you unintentionally. Ok, my face might be a mess afterwards, but I'm back on track again, so it balances out. Better cry at a sad movie than punch a wall!

Nothing will ever beat "I Am Sam" for heart string tugging though.
