Yes you will need two licenses. and to be granted a license you will need to either have permission of a few landowners or be a member of a target shooting/gun club/range.
afaik you would need to get something in writing from the family friend to say that he is giving/selling his guns to you.
there are probably more threads here regarding licensing and applications so have a look!

    Hey lenomark,

Was wondering if you could clarify something. Are you shooting, or intending to shoot, with an air rifle or smallbore (.22) or full bore (centrefires). Depending on what you're going to shoot will depend on where you can shoot.

You need a licence for every firearm you hold or intend to buy from air rifle to fullbore to shotgun to pistol. For certain firearms land owners permission will not suffice. Membership of a gun is a requirement. That along with gun safes, house alarms etc. This is not meant to scare you or put you off. The more people shooting the better. Just intended to inform you of what you will need so you can proceed with all the facts.

If you are getting the firearms from a family or friend or dealer the process is basically the same. A note/letter from them to state that they are transferring/selling the firearms to you. The note/letter should contain the serial numbers of the firearms being transferred/sold along with the sellers name, pulse number and contact details. When you go through the entire process and get your own licences the seller should be given a copy of your licence (photocopy) so he/she can show her local FO. The seller must then surrender their licences otherwise you will be classified as a second licence holder on the same firearms.

If you intend to take up target shooting membership of a gun club will suffice to allow you to get your licence. Check with the intended gun club as to their position on new members joining and then asking for letters to get licences. Some clubs do not like new members asking for this as some people use the club to get the licences and then do not rejoin the following year.

Membership fees for gun clubs vary from club to club. Some or most clubs have a large once off joining fee to deter people only interested in using the club for the above reasons. This fee will drop by nearly half the next year. (eg. year 1 - €550, year 2 - €270, year 3- €270 etc)

There are a number of clubs in Dublin. For a partial list try http://homepage.eircom.net/~joecon/irishclubs.html . Its not a full list but a good starting point.

Hope some of this helps Sorry for being so long winded.

If you want to take up clays seriously, then you should consider joining the ICPSA

They run competitions every weekend up and down the country and there is a wide variety of disciplines to shoot from trap to skeet to sporting.

This list http://wiki.boards.ie/wiki/Shooting_Clubs_and_Ranges is more up-to-date as regards contact info and range facilities and can be used in conjunction with ezridax's link
