Dublin City Marathon 2009: Definitely Maybe

Right have decided to start a new log. As the thread title suggests I want to run Dublin this year. I am just back from a minor shin injury picked up in my last training block and want to have something to motivate me.

My aim is to get into decent shape and stay injury free so I can have a crack at my marathon PB.

The only thing possibly hindering my marathon goal is the fact I'm off to the most violent city in South America for 2 weeks with work in August. Obviously outdoor training may be a problem with drug dealers, FARC guerillas etc. If this period is not conducive to training I will reassess my aim in early September.

A couple of friends have asked me to pace them so that will be plan B for me. I love the buzz of marathon running and if I'm not aiming for a PB personally the idea of cajolling friends around the course could come a close second if everything went well.

I have realised I need a coach. I have a fair idea about running and know how to get into reasonable shape myself. I know I have over cooked training in the past to my detriment so I'm hoping a steadying hand can tell me to kop on and guide me. I'm a bit stubborn but having talked to a coach in the club he has agreed to prescribe and monitor my progress.

In the short term I'm going to target the Adidas 5 mile in the park. If that goes well, the ten miler followed by the half are next on the cards. Sure we'll see how the body responds. If I feel training is going to result in an injury I will knock the marathon on the head. I missed 6-7 weeks due to an inability to walk without serious pain in my lower leg. I'd rather get some easy mileage in then run the risk of crocking myself again.

I'm back running regularly for the last 2 weeks. I'll post what I've done to date later.

    Let the fun begin :)

Best of luck roadrunner, really enjoyed your last log and no doubt will enjoy this one also. Can't wait to read how you get on with running in South America.

I've had more comebacks than comebacks than Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and my most recent one started the 2nd of June. This is what I've done to date

    June 2 3.88 miles @7.45 min/mile
    June 3 4.1 miles @8.35 min/mile
    June 5 4.2 miles @7.16 min/mile
    June 6 5.04 miles @8.37 min/mile
    June 8 45 minutes on grass ?
    June 9 6.28 miles @8.13 min/mile
    June 11 5.68 miles @7.04 min/mile
    June 12 4 miles @7.32 min/mile
    June 14 ~9miles @8.15 min/mile

Plan for this week is 5 days running. If this week goes well I may increase to six days next week. I still have a little inflammation in my shin. It's very minor but will rest it on Wednesday and Saturday (and others if need be). Hope to get a 10 mile run in the weekend. Will also do a time trial over 5k to see what sort of shape I'm in. Remaining 3 days will be easy running not to exceed 50 minutes.

Hi RoadRunner, how will you do the time trial? In a race situation, or just 'go for it' style? What will you do with the info? Compare it to your previous 5k time trials? Hope the recovery is complete. Best of luck with the new goal.

Great to see you back The Road Runner. Also really enjoyed your last log and London been such a success.
Me also hoping for good PB in Dublin. My end Aug - 3 weeks Sept look challenging also as will have to maintain running schedule during family holiday and work commitments in rather hot places. Thankfully don't intend to bump into any FARC chaps.

    Hey KC

I was going to jump into a race but I was afraid if I felt dodgy I would keep on hammering and do myself more damage than good. My fitness is also desperate at the moment and a race could be demoralising. Therefore I'm going to do it free style :)

We'll use the time to help me calculate pace of my sessions for the next couple of weeks.

    Cheers

Best of luck with that. I love running in the heat but finding the time on holidays can be tricky.

Good to see you back RR and will be watching this log! Best of luck on the new conquest. Once Tri season is over I'll be chasing a pb in Dublin myself so may pick your brains from time to time closer to the time to achieve the time :D

5.75 miles @8.01 pace on grass. Handy enough, felt fine. Happy after longish run yesterday. Will keep all runs logged in the table below. May be more hassle than it's worse so will decide if it's a permanent feature or not.

Good luck RR. Are you following a particular plan or one you put together yourself?
Are you aiming for a particular target?
Where abouts do you do most of your training runs, your LSRs in particular?
Have you a training partner? I found it a great boon to my training...

Are you following a particular plan or one you put together yourself?

The next couple of weeks I'm on my own schedule wise. After that I will have a rough schedule drawn up for me by a coach in my club.
Are you aiming for a particular target?

If all goes well I really want to take a chunk off my PB.
Where abouts do you do most of your training runs, your LSRs in particular?
Most runs in Maynooth or around Corkagh park in Clondalkin. LSR usually either in Corkagh or Phoenix park.
    Have you a training partner?
At work I run regularly with a couple of guys who are a great help. For LSRs at weekend if I have nobody to run with I usually text a couple of friends and meet up with them or head down to my club (haven't done this in a while though). Having talked to a few Boardsies there are plenty of people running Autumn marathons as well and I'm sure I can hook up with these also.

Just under the 5 miles today. Had a triple helping of good news in work yesterday so was out for dinner and a few beers. Was feeling a little dehydrated today even though I drank plenty of water last night and this morning. Heart rate was quite high early probably due to beer and warm weather. Rest tomorrow. Going to do a 5k time trial either Thursday or Friday depending on when I can fit it in best. Leg feels good

Missed training yesterday. Had to head to Belfast and I got delayed. Got home after 9 and I could have gone for a run but I was jaded so I backed out. That's the first time I've missed a planned training day in a while and it will be the last.

Today was 5 very easy miles with a couple of friends.

Still have to do a 5k time trial for myself and was thinking about the 5k in Raheny on Sunday. In hindsight a longish Sunday run will probably be more beneficial. Time trial will definitely take place on Tuesday.

Ran on grass again today. First 3 miles handy enough followed by 2 miles at a faster pace. Wanted to see how the leg reacted to a faster pace and also prime myself slightly for Tuesdays time trial.

Targeted 2 X 6 minute miles so was happy that I went slightly quicker, could really feel it though. Hopefully this this 4 months 26 * 6 minute miles will be a piece of pi$$ !

Hoping to get 10 miles in tomorrow wilth my club. I'm expecting the gits to try and hammer me as they like to kick a man when he is down so I'll be letting them off if the pace gets too crazy

10 miles with some of my club mates in the Phoenix park this morning. Preparations were less than ideal as I had a few unplanned beers last night after dinner with the old man.

Still managed to make it to the park for 9.30 so I was happy with myself. Made sure to drink plenty of water last night and this morning before the run so I wasn't too dehydrated. I have found recently that if I'm a little dehydrated the muscles/tendons that have led to injury in the past 12 months (hip and shin) feel very tight. The obvious solution is to not drink the night before training. I need to decrease my alcohol intake anyway so this won't be a hard thing to cut out.

The run itself went well, started out around 8.15 pace and got progressively quicker as the run went on. I was worried that some of my club mates would try to hammer me today and I was right. After 5 miles one of them asked how I was feeling and I told him I was grand, not a bother, which was the truth. For the craic a mile later I remarked I wasn't feeling great. Q a sudden increase in speed and the fastest mile of this mornings run  They are very predictable. I was feeling good at the end so I pushed on and dropped them just to make a childish point.

Haven't decided on my training days for next week. I have a dental appointment I need to rearrange and attend, so my schedule will be tailored to accommodate this.

Didn't get out 'til late but it's easy to motivate yourself out the door when it is so balmy.

Aim was to keep heart rate below 140 and forget about pace. Average was 141, would have been spot on if I didn't turn on the style passing a group of cracking looking women who were out running themselves. Heart rate was up in the 160s :P I looked great going by them (in my mind anyway) half a mile down the road I looked like a right unfit git. I was waiting for them to catch me. Thankfully they didn't !

Had hoped to do something fast today. Leg is feeling a little tight after running on the concrete but nothing to complain about. I've turned into a bit of a hypochondriac the last couple of months. However I have now decided to take today off as a precaution and do some stretching instead. I've ran 4 days in a row with increased intensity relative to previous days so want to ensure I don't overload my shin too soon. I'll do something fast tomorrow instead. Tomorrow is tight workwise but I'll make sure to get out. Hope to do run 5 times this week and will hopefully move up to 6 days next week all going well.

I decided a couple of weeks back I needed to do some sort of a time trial to gauge my current level of fitness. Thankfully I put this off for a couple of weeks but yesterday was D-day so I warmed up, toed the line, set my Garmin to spit out Km splits and off I went.

On my warm up I decided 3.30 km splits would be my target. I was hoping to hit 3 of these and then if I had anything in the tank speed up over the last couple of km. That was the plan anyway......... the plan didn't go too well.

I hit the first km in 3.30 on the nose. However I felt as if I was running at 3 minute pace  It was a total shock to the system. I progressively got slower and my last km was in 3.38. I finished the 5km in 18.01 and I was absolutely wrecked. I can usually catch my breath reasonably quickly after finishing a 5km but yesterday was a whole new experience. I had to lie down on the footpath I was so disorientated. My heart rate was through the roof. I have a minor case of sports induced asthma which has been dormant for years but it raised it's ugly head yesterday and I was coughing and spluttering for the rest of the day as I had no inhaler with me. When I seen the time I was absolutely disgusted considering I was running 10ks at a faster pace then yesterdays pace in training a couple of months ago.

10 minutes later a bit of realism struck. I was running at 5.48 mile pace for over 3 miles. I've only been back running for 4 weeks and 30 miles has been my max mileage per week. I've done no tempo/threshold runs and very few runs over 40 minutes. All things considered 18.01 isn't too bad. Yesterdays time trial was a success. I now know where I stand.

Over the coming weeks I will increase my mileage and get into a routine of doing sessions (starting this weekend). As an intermediate goal I'm targeting the 5 mile adidas race in the Phoenix park. I may have to readjust my initial target time based on yesterdays run. The Mcmillinan calculator estimates I can run 29.51. I hope to knock a minute off that estimate by the time the race rolls around. In the greater scheme of things the 5 mile race is going to be another time trial but between now and then I'll be doing everything I can to run a decent time

Hi rr, I'm doing the 5 miler in the park aswell, do u know the route, is it relatively flat? I would absolutely love to go sub 40 there, but if it's hot, that could b another story

Hi rr, I'm doing the 5 miler in the park aswell, do u know the route, is it relatively flat?

No, hilly for a road course, ie goes from the Chapelizod gate up past the hospital to the main road, so a fairly substantial climb.

Welcome back RR, best of luck with the new target.

Hey, you wouldn't call it a hill route but it does have a couple of drags on it that can slow you down. If you have ever ran a road race in the park you will have ran a good proportion of the 5 mile route.

In my opinion the course is a little tough and in general I find I run about 20-30 seconds slower on this route compared to others. I actually find this the case for most races run in the Phoenix park.

Headed down to the club again for an 8 mile run. Traffic was light so got heir 30 minutes early. Was thinking of heading out myself but decided to hang on for a couple of others as we already have a problem of poorly attended club nights due to people doing their own thing.

I needn't have bothered though. The lads were pushing quite hard from the start so I let them off and ran the lap on my own trying to keep the heart rate down.

The average was 145 which was ok considering it was quite high for the first 2 miles. I was still sluggish from the time trial the day before and wanted to recover. I'm feeling quite tired today and have a few little niggles so it is as well I decided to take today off in advance. Have to work tomorrow but will get out to do something nippy hopefully.

It quite amazing how inefficient the body can become so quickly.

RR you were banging out 6:22 min miles x 26.2 which only seemed like a few week ago now in London (end April).
You heart rate now goes sky high when you over take a few looking looking female specimens (we are all guilty of speeding up on those occasions);)

BTW what's your max and resting heart rate?

I don't know just yet. To be honest I've been afraid to check as it could be a bit disheartening :(

However I had planned on monitoring my heart rate first thing in the morning for a few days to get the resting rate. Will approximate the max during a session in the coming days also. These will be used as a guide to determining my heart rate on rest days in particular.

Forget the 6.22 * 26, what was frightening was the 13 * 5.45 I did in march. I couldn't even manage 3 miles at that pace the other day  It will come back though quite quickly if I get a few weeks uninterupted training

Best of luck with the log. Where are you off to in South America? I´m based in Bogotá so if it´s here let me know and i´ll show you a few non-farc spots for running.

Had hoped to get out at lunch today but was stuck in work all day so had to wait until after 5. I wasn't in the mood but the good weather definitely helped me get get my ass down to the local park.

I was unsure whether I should do 1k or 2k reps today. The 2k reps would probably have been more beneficial but I didn't want to push too hard so I wussed out and decided on the 1k reps. I start my proper marathon program in a couple of weeks and have signed my training over to a coach in my club so thankfully I won't have to think about sessions like this in the near future.

Wednesdays time trial was a bit of a wake up call so I decided to hit the first one in 3.30 and try to get progressively quicker. The loop I run on is a relatively flat grass loop. Recovery between reps was 90 seconds. I hit he first in 3.26 and the last one in 3.18 so everything went to plan. I'm a little tired now obviously but hope to get a very easy longish run in tomorrow morning.

Todays run felt a lot easier than last weeks 2 mile hardish run so I think it's safe to assume my fitness levels have come on a little since last weekend. Although in all honesty that wouldn't be hard :)

Hi RR, Do you mind if I ask what the dynamic is between you & the coach. How much input do you have to the plan and then how often will you meet / talk / text? Have you used one before, other than a general club coach?

I'll have a little input at first. The guy who is drawing up my schedule knows me and my running history to date very well. We are actually good friends and normally talk a couple of times a week so that will continue. He is insisting on taking a couple of my sessions per month as he doesn't think I push myself hard enough at times so that will be welcomed and very interesting. The last time he took a session (about 3 years ago) we had the mother of all arguments. I don't agree with all his ideas but he has trained a good few guys to times a lot quicker than what I have ran so it's time to start listening to someone else !

We have discussed things in the past but I've treated his advice carte blanche picking and choosing what I wanted to do. I explained to him what days suit me best for training etc on based on that he has put a schedule together. More importantly my racing choices are going to be curtailed. For anybody who has a coach this is probably the norm, but I've looked after my own training for the past 5 years and if I'm honest I've made some awful cock ups

Ran in phoenix park with Stupid Private. I was glad of the company as I wasn't feeling great this morning. I felt a little tight at first but loosened up as the run went on.

I was quite tired and thought maybe I was pushing too hard but my average heart rate was around 145 so that tells me it was my legs that were still feeling the effects of yesterdays session. It was also quite warm especially the second half of the run and this didn't help (although I'm not complaining about the good weather).

I managed to run over 40 miles this week which is a steady improvement on previous weeks. I'm hoping to get out 6 days next week so I'll probably get close to 50 miles all going to plan. Tomorrow is going to very very slow , I definitely need a nice recovery day.

Last night I ran a nice 6 miles on grass and managed to keep the average heart rate below 140 which was what I wanted.

Today I was supposed to do a session. Had planned on doing 2k reps but after 1 I was spent. I ended up doing 2k-1k-1k-1k with a jog recovery in between. I was going to attempt another 1k rep at the end but decided against it. Glad I did now as well, found it very hard to get my heart rate down on the cool down lap. Times weren't great either. Another rep would have done me no favors. A little disappointed but I could still feel Saturday and Sunday in my legs so it was to be expected. Just glad I got out now.

I'll be in Bogota briefly before heading to Medellin. All joking aside how safe is it running wise. I know every city has dodgy areas but I was just wondering if foreign runners would stick out like a sore thumb ?

There´s nothing to worry about really other than the drivers (they drive like lunatics over here, seriously). In Bogotá stick to the north of the city (in the parks preferably) and avoid the centre (for running at least). In Medellin the best area is around Parque Lleras but I don´t really know too much about the city from a runners point of view (avoid the centre as well).

As a foreigner you don´t get too many looks at all really. Most people that get in trouble over here either live in bad areas or have done something to someone, so a random foreigner out running is unlikely to have any problems. The main danger areas are in the countryside, the cities are pretty much like any other big cities, be a bit street wise and you´ll be grand, oh, and avoid the cars!

Ran on the canal bank again today. The grass is overgrown in places and the camber of the bank itself isn't great so I may avoid it in the future as I'm sure it is doing the legs no favors.

It was unbelievably warm, felt very uncomfortable at times although we were clipping along nicely once we got a couple of slow miles under our belt initially.

Didn't wear the heart rate monitor as I'm blaming it on contributing to some nipple chaffing I've experienced lately. I have absolutely nothing to back that up with. If I'm honest I don't like wearing the HRM but will persist with it in the future in the hope I'll grow used to it.

No I wear it well below them. The chafing is probably more to do with the sticky weather and additional weight I'm now carrying

Had to do presentations all day in work today so I was on my feet from 10-4 talking non stop. Didn't sleep well last night and work really wore me down. Wasn't in the mood for training at all, felt knackered.

Hit the Phoenix park with a club mate for a run at 5pm. Got the 8 miles in (just about :o). The park was quite wet from all the rain so I developed a few blisters on my feet early on. After 5 miles my nipples started to chafe due to the heat. To top it all a couple of minutes later my stomach eventually gave in and I had to make a dash for the bushes, this has since led to nappy rash like complications .

Blisters, chafing and nappy rash on an 8 mile run somebody must have it in for me.
Rest day and some physio tomorrow.

Got physio on Friday and felt a bit tender so took Friday and Saturday off. Nice 12 miles on Sunday, could have gone on but my head wasn't right. Similar story today and yesterday. Just wasn't in the mood to run at all so although distances aren't great I'm satisfied with the fact I got my arse out the door. Hopefully the week will pick up intensity wise.

Motivation is fine thanks. Overall I am enjoying the fact I'm back running regularly. I just need a couple of weeks quality training to get me going again. I'm racing the adidas series so that will help me get some focus for my training.

Was in foul mood yesterday and things came to a head in 5 minutes of madness.

Over the last month while on my regular run during lunch time a Jack Russell called Milly has tried to nip me on the calf on at least 4 separate occasions. Milly is walked along a public walk way on the Royal canal and should, by right, be on a lead. I have pointed this out to the auld bitch who owns milly.

Well Milly went for me again and this time managed to nip me on the calf. Totally lost the plot and threw the sneaky/vicious little bastard into the canal. I was actually trying to fling him onto the train track the other side of the canal. Anyway he got walloped off the canal bank and made a nice splash. Need to avoid the canal for a few months. Feel in better form today though.

LOL some retribution for the runner against the canine chaser :D I was bitten myself last sunday but luckily the only thing torn was the tongue of my shoe. I would have been doing well to throw an english sheepdog very far but did inform the owner that the dog will be punted back into the garden if he goes for me again. About 6 hyper dogs along my route, its like running the gauntlet especially late night runs.
