Just received a letter from wit saying thats its gonna cost me 150 euro to repeat the two exams that i failed.
Is it just me or does anyone find that outrageous?? In fairness it shouldn't cost that much for someone to sit 2 exams.

Id appreciate you kept smart comments outside of the forum and just answered the question. For some people, no matter how hard they work, they dont do well for many reasons. Most people dont set out to "fail".

If you fail to prepare....... prepare to fail

It is a ridiculous amount of money - I'd love to know where this money is spent really. It takes probably 20cent to print out the paper and a few bob to get em corrected, and another few euro's to supervise the exam. Maybe the rest of the money goes to new flower beds as usual

I do agree with what you have just said there, €150 is a bit extortionate. I understand that external examiners, correctors and lecturers supervising the exam need to be paid etc. (even though that might be from the government:confused:)
But in saying that I believe €50 is more than enough looking at the amount of students that do repeats, and its not helping the students reputation towards the college with fees like that in getting the college Uni status (Just my opinion, however the Uni part is another discussion for another day)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17 The Steelman

The price is a bit high, but then the college is almost bankrupt, with little money coming down from the government, so, IMO at least, its better that price than no degree at all.

And like if ya think about it, its a kinda engenious idea to raise money... for a few reasons.

Alot of people, a few here, wouldn't have any pity on students having to pay that sort of price. The inevitable "you shouldnt have failed it so" being bandied about. So a college would generally get away with a high price for repeats without a major public outrage.

Not only that, but from an academic point of few, a high price to repeat any exam would "encourage" students to study harder to pass the first time round.

I think your last point was the reason for such fees. Its understandable but a complete bitch if you actually put in the work but fail on the day (it can happen).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,472 ✭✭✭AdMMM

Well, €150 isn't all that expensive all things considered. A paper must be made out which is of a similar standard to the previous one i.e. it can't just be slapped together in a few minutes. External examiners must be brought in. Supervising staff must be hired. Administrative work behind the scenes must be carried out. The costs of all these add up and I don't think the onus should be on the Government to subsidise them.

In my case, I have so many repeats, I think I'm getting great value for money!

Repeat papers are made at the same time the main paper is made and usually (not always, but usualy) very similar to the first paper. If you consider it 150 times the amount of students probably repeating, must be a nice bit of money left over.

But ya, great value for more then one but not so much if its just one :p

listen if ya fail an exam or two no big deal....i think we are getting off light enough having to pay €150 to repeat regardless of the number of exams...if we were up in dublin we'd be dishing out €200 per exam!!!

What college/university, UCD? Its €190 in DCU to repeat any exam in August (not per exam). UCD charge €220 per exam (from what I can gather from the jungle that is their website).

The other colleges/university's don't state their exam fees.

Ok I'm confused now. Surely thats next years academic calender?!?!?
Could they not have left this years one up until the academic year is over?

I assume its a misprint as it has Semester 1 2009 and Semester 2 2010. The dates for our exams gone by (Semester 2) are correct if the year is 2009 but not if 2010 (which it suggests)

That is the academic calender for next year. it would be right for semester 2 to be in 2010.

So it is. I'm nearly sure the date I checked matched with 2009. :S

Anyway, ill ask on Monday when I am in what the story is. I assume its still a mistake having part of 2009 (the wrong part) and part of 2010 online.

Edit: According to this PDF I found on a quick google its the 17th ending the 24th. Which makes sense as I know repeat essays must be due in on the 25th which is usually after the exams.

To any one that did fail n exam and are repeating,

Can anyone get into the exam entry confirmation page to select the repeats, as i cant?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 529 ✭✭✭passingthrough

as bad as €150 is to sit a repeat exam i have to pay that to do a project, i will not be getting any new exam paper, i will not be supervised, i will not be using any college resources other than a letter to say that i need to pay 150 and my project will be looked at for 5 mins and then decided if i pass or fail.

i am going to see about getting some of this money back at least. if you dont ask you wont get, im sick of being f*cked around by the college and this is just another point to add to the list.

Well supposedly the deadline for paying was the 30th June. I got a "hurry up" phone call from them on the 3rd July. I'd just ring them or email them to see what the story is

I was told by a few (nobody offical) that it does not count and the highest you can get in a repeat is 40%. Ill try get a more offical word on it.

Btw - double check your timetable, one of my exams is now later then originally indicated on the website.

hmmm, if thats true, then thats new on me.

from what i heard, it was that you were going to be marked entirley on the repeat exam, and that the exam was worth however much it would be overall

like if the exam was worth 50% and you made up the rest by CA, then you could only get 50%.

    ...

actually i think i know what you mean now. If you repeat any exam, then its marked on your transcript as Pass. You cant get recognition as Merit or Destinction even if your grade goes up to that level.

Which is what I said :p In the first attempt, you can pull your grade up using CA.

    I actually spoke with the School of Science and I was told that;
    1) If your CA helps you, they will use it to pass you.
    2) Unsure about compensation and repeats.
