I have a 2002 Honda Civic Type R - unfortunately one of the cars the insurance companies love to hate most. When I got it the only insurance company that would touch me was XS Direct. I'm 28, I paid €1,000 in year one and two. However it's up and despite the extra no claims bonus my insurance has gone up over 20% with them. Strange cause a friend is also with them has a Jag, he has had a write off claim, yet his insurance went down by 15% - doesn't make any sense!

Last time I 'shopped around' i called 5 companies and none would even quote me. Does anyone know any brokers that specialise in finding quote for cars like mine?

Thanks, just tried them - when I put in my car it just says "Sorry we cannot quote you at this time". I can change it to a BMW M3 or Porsche Boxter and I get quotes cheaper than I am paying now :(

Insurance companies do not hate any particular car. They base their quotes only on hard (actuarial / statistic / insert other fancy term) facts. Fact is that an average Type R driver is a very young boy racer quite likely to cause a massive accident leading to major pay out to victims

Of course the outcome of this (very high insurance cost) is harsh for a very safe driver who owns a car deemed to be high risk.... :(

Thing is they are very rare cars in Ireland - its not very often at all that I see one around... It's not like every little nacker in Ireland has one...

    That can work out worse...

Insurance companies often undercut eachother for the first year or two but once they have you hooked as such they raise your premium.
This is common practice with some companies.
i found Hibernian good when i had a high performance car a few years ago.
just spen an hour ringing round....its easy enough and youll get great satisfaction.

Well, I see what you did there anyway, even if nobody else did!

They don't deal direct with the public. You must use a broker.

I'd forget about online quotes and ring around - the results tend to be much better.

Ring 123 and they'll quote you.

Or as mentioned try Travelers insurance (who also underwrite 123), they specialise in high performace cars, you have to go through a broker though.

Just tried 123 this morning and they said they cannot quote me.
What brokers are good to go through Travellers etc?

I currently use www.Arachas.ie which used to be Wright Group in Wexford. They said XS Direct was the cheapest...

I was in the same position a few years back trying to get cover on an FTO. I gave this crowd a call http://www.brittoninsurance.com/ and they gave me a decent quote over the phone .

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 12,778 Mod ✭✭✭✭Zascar

Thanks, just filled in their online form and get this: Same details, same company - XS Direct, same 4k excess, but their Quote is €1,018. €200 cheaper than the quote I got through my broker I've been using for 3 years.

Unortunately I have already gone ahead with the other one - cause my insuranace was up that day and I was not going to drive without it. Is there a cooling off period where I can cancel? If so I can swap over and save myself over €200. Or maybe they will refund me? What do you think?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,991 ✭✭✭Barr

I think there a 10 or 14 day cooling off period with most policies where u can get a full refund.

Just called XS Direct themselves and they quoted me €933!!!
Dam Arachas ripping me off!!! They are about to get an earfull!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,991 ✭✭✭Barr

Arachas are giving themselves a nice commision , f**king ripoff

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 12,778 Mod ✭✭✭✭Zascar

They claimed ignorance and said that XS Driect themselves raised prices by 10%-15%
I told him I want to cancel and get a refund, he said he'll have to check and call me back.
They better not try to screw me on this...

How long has it been since you took out the policy ?

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 12,778 Mod ✭✭✭✭Zascar

Only a few days... was some time last week..

OK they called me back and they said they would match it - phew.

It pays to shop around people!

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,991 ✭✭✭Barr

You should be fine - theres a timeframe recommended by the Financial Regulator to Insurance companies they have to adhere to .

Its amazing the variation on pricing by just going through a different channel. It was all xs direct after all. Well done.

I would have to add another for travelers insurance. They gave me the best deal by far! :)

I've just called a broker for a quote with Travelers, they'll get back to me tomorrow. I generally find Hibernian cheapest as they give me 30% for my IAM license, but they've gone up by 20% this year. Still the cheapest quote so far though; we'll see what Travelers say.

Sorry if i'm repeating myself as I have made this recommendation before but myself and some mates find First Ireland very good for performance cars.

The car insurance section is not available anymore, does anybody know why? It was a very good service for getting motor quotes, saved a load of time.
