First look at the photo - christ it looks like a brick!

Further thoughts as I read the article ...
    - Ok, so the photo is only a mock one .. that's fine .. let's hope the actual one has a bit of style to it.
    - 5 meg camera always a plus, as is GPS
    - Don't know much about Maemo 5 really so can't comment ..

MEh . ... no more thoughts really until I read more details.

The main objection I had to Nokia's previous Internet devices, i.e. the N700, N800 etc, was the fact that the devices relied on Wi-Fi for their access to the Internet. Thankfully this new model resolves that issue by allowing a sim card to be used, so Internet availability is greatly enhanced.

I don't know whether the N97 will eat into the N900's sales, but it will be interesting to see how the two devices co-exist and which will be the more popular amongst users.

i'd say the N900 will still be more of a specialist device while the N97 will remain the flagship. the N97 is very integrated with their own services and stuff. the N900 is a more open system. hopefully it won't be too expensive. not more than the N97 anyway

Given the supposed specs, I can't see how the N900 won't cost more than the N97.

I saw that image yesterday. A 3 line keyboard doesn't sound too appealing and what is with the design? I know the form factor doesn't allow for drastic design changes, but it looks just like the previous Nokia Internet devices and a lot of HTC devices from over the years.

Seems like Nokia is moving in the right direction.

Faster processor, more RAM, modern OS, graphics support. It'll be interesting to see this in the flesh.

Pity their design department can't make a decent looking phone for the N900 tho.

It STILL uses a resistive screen with no multitouch = no buy.

And from the demonstration videos, it was not smooth at all, it was very jerky and lagging, typical of Nokia.

Give them a chance mate, it's still a prototype afaik.

But knowing nokia these days they'll release it will tones of bugs and take months to fix them. It's a shame really. Although i still want one!

Considering the similarities between this and their current flagship, they'll seriously have to drop the price of the N97 to a more reasonable level. The N97 is still more expensive than this N900!

OK, I'll give them a chance on the software side, but the physical side won't be changed, unfortunately.

i have to say from first impressions that this looks like it will replace my n97.

currently the n97 was a let down from launch but i'd say after a few months from now it might begin to pick up as do other phones.

from the look at the specs of the n900, i can't see anything to complain about.

i know some people hate resistive touch screens but the fact remains capcitive touch screens do have there limits aswell. also using resistive touch screens aswell for the use of a stylus.

the processor and ram in this are extremely high in my books considering the limits of the n97(128mb what were they thinking!!!)

also pretty much everything from the n97 is making its way over except its down points and high price tag(which is a thumbs up in my eyes)

obviously its too early to comment on just how good maemo will be on this as its a first for a nokia phone(tablet phone aswell)

i will however say that the os looks amzing from the screenshots, to say the least it will look better the symbian.

all my points can be considered moot if you take into the fact that n97 software was a heep of crap when it came out, but lets remember that this isnt going to be a simple s60 phone and all they did with the n97 was just the 5800 firmware as a base plate for the n97

here they have no before and are working hard from the begining and i admire them from that.

i will however be selling my n97 for this(anyone interested).

But the Maemo OS was used on their previous internet tablets, so i would presume they are building on that. But either way, the spec of this thing seems fantastic, i want a "do everything" device, or at least one that will get me online and view full web pages with flash, music player. And thus far, although it's a decent phone, my 5800 just doesn't cut it. The web browser simply crashes too often.

yeah but its the first time it will be used for a phone and thta means it will be a much bigger range of people getting this(speculation)

although i agree it does look amazing and it better preform well or i will hunt nokia down!!!!

As much as I despise the phrase, could this finally be the ultimate iPhone killer?

It seems to be everything the N97 should have been.

From what I have seen on those videos, I am impressed. Plus, crazy thing, it has Flash 9.4.That opens up a lot of avenues closed to the iPhone.

I for one will be watching this device quite carefully.

As far as I'm concerned this is the holy grail of phones and moves the playing field to an entirely new level - it blows everything else into the weeds with it's combination of great hardware and, most of all, that operating system. I've considered the Hero and came oh so close to buying the I8910, but managed to hold out for this, and I want one NOW :D

Capacitive is no good on high-res screens, nor when wearing gloves etc, and this looks very fluid and responsive. But most importantly, the fact that this is Maemo, a linux distribution, means that almost any Debian app can be ported over, OpenOffice or whatever you want.

It's also completely open, doesn't have to be jailbroken or any of that crap. Nokia have released some serious letdowns in the recent past, but this just about redeems them in my eyes. Viva le N900 !! I have cash burning a hole in my pocket for this baby and I absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on one..

I'd be expecting a 4-5" tablet a la the n810, and other devices scaling up to 10" such as rumoured here..

10" phone would be nice :) if it was all you'd need to stay in touch & use as a computer it would be great. have removable modules for any type of network imaginable like satellite, gsm, lte. and a fuel cell to keep it going for about a month

    That could be true,

According to Eldar Murtazin(who is in the "know" with Nokia) N97 could be the last flagship S60 mobile phone.

Here's a review with tons of pictures of N900.
    http://mobile-review.com/review/nokia-rx51-n900-en.shtml

Looks like they made Maemo UI resemble S60 FP2 very closely, even the icons are the same.

the N97 is no king - doesn't even have the built in VoiP app. N97 is nothing more than nokia's answer to the social networking craze. the N900 is a different beast altogether
