If we were to look inside your handbag, what would we usually find?

    my handbag contains:
    wallet
    Blackberry
    iPod
    pack of baby wipes
aluminium bottle for refilling with water

    cosmetics case with
    lipstick
    lipgloss
Colgate Wisps (brilliant things which are individually packaged disposable mini toobrushes with paste already in them)
    powder compact
    eyeliner
    Essie cuticle pen

small Swiss Army knife (includes tweezers, scissors, etc)

    small hairbrush

    pen and notepad
    think that's it.

In every bag I own I have a few things ready so that if I need to switch bags in a hurry, all I have to do is toss in my wallet and bberry:

    Chapstick
    Hand lotion
    Nail file/emery board
    Pen
    Gum

I also tend to always have old receipts that I never clean out . . .

    Pen
Powder for the visage if I think I might need it
    Lip balm
A book or newspaper (again, depending on the size of the bag)

    Oh jesus. My handbag is my life;

    -passport
    -wallet
-2 tubes of lip balm in different shades
    -3 or 4 eyeliner pencils
    -1 or 2 pens
    -mascara
    -foundation
    -concealer
    -toner
    -full-sized round hair brush
-two or three little eyeshadow pots
    -camera
    -lipstick
-2 bottles of different perfumes (I mix)
    -pencil sharpener
-tiny little box with safety pins, a needle, a bit of thread and buttons
    -small pair of scissors
    -nail clippers
    -thumb pick (guitar)
    -rolling papers
-miniature padlock and key (no idea why)
    -a german mark
    -a small mirror
    -antiperspirant can
    -a lollipop
    -occasionally an umbrella
-occasionally a notebook, if I remember

My phone and mp3 player and keys live in the pockets of my leather jacket which I never really remove.

This comes from being a little transient (I get stuck in a lot of crappy situations); I keep everything on me at all times.

My handbag isn't very big, either, when I start pulling things out it's like a bloody clown car, nobody can ever figure out how I can fit so much in there, but I do. It fits quite nicely under my arm, only about six inches deep or so. If that.

Apologies in advance for the bloke intrusion....

Wow! That's all I can say. Right I'm now taking names of those out there I want with me on a desert island for survival purposes. liah is in the lead so far with GirlInterrupted coming a close second. With that lot they could start a fire, make a signal, write help letters and make a sail for the raft and take pictures for the inevitable book that would follow. :)

Handbags have fascinated me. Damn near every woman I've known for any length of time has helped me out with something out of her handbag. One ex of mine had a first aid kit in hers. I laughed when I brought her fishing one time and she brought it with her. Oh how I laughed at her. Right up to the moment when I hooked myself in the ear. Her laughter ended up being louder....The design aspect too. One of my women mates reckons I'm a dab hand at spotting a good un. Must be right beside the love for gooey choccy gene on my Y chromosome. :)

BTW Great idea for a thread I have to say.

LOL at the image of liah with her "clown car."

I forgot something very important for my list. I always have Hollywood Fashion Tape in my bag. Some people call it "tit tape" but that's not what I use it for. Basically it's a little tin with strips of double-sided tape. It's brilliant for all sorts of emergencies like rips, clothes that won't stay where they are suposed to etc..

    Highy recommend!

    18-55mm lens
    Wallet (made of duct tape!)
    iPhone
    Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour cream
    1 x Foundation
    1 x Lipstick

    1.2kg spare change

Miss Army knife (pink swiss army knife)

This is the reduced version, I used to have one hell of a list, then I realised that the emergency / zombie invasion / nuclear holocaust I was preparing for was unlikely to happen while I was out for a stroll.

I have been known to leave the house with just the mp3 player, keys wallet and gum, but if I am going a distance or have kids with me, it's just easier.

Your surprise is down to you not understanding the principles of handbag-temporal dynamics sir. It is a theory I have been working on that is understood implicitly by all women but cannot be grasped by men for some reason.

Essentially, handbags do not correspond to the same spatial-temporal dimensions as the rest of physical matter in the universe. This is because they are not in fact comprised of temporal matter. Rather, each handbag is a portal or wormhole (think along the lines of stargate here) to an enormous central hub which is infinite in capacity and contains all of the convenient and useful items that a lady might need and can be retrieved in a moment of crisis.

I call it the Mary Poppins theory

My handbag is new, I bought it at the weekend, and I was in a rush so I don't have much in it, everything is at home in my other handbag.

    I currently have:

    Filofax
    Umbrella
Keys (incl. trolley key, house keys for home and apartment, new house keys, mini maglite, nail clippers) on a lanyard so I can find them when I need them
    Two phones
    MP3 player
    Current book
    Selection of pens
    Sunglasses
    Bottle of water
    8 nuts, bolts and washers
Ryvita (in case I get peckish)
    Phones
    Brownie recipe
    Mini sewing kit
    Pain killers
    Vitamin C tablets
    Calcium tablets
    Hugo Deep Red
    Green hoops
    Hand mirror
    Tweezers
    Small hairbrush
    Marshmallow flavour lipgloss
    Clear, hardening nailpolish

That's about it off the top of my head, but there's plenty of space for more.

    Lanyard on keys ftw.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 645 ✭✭✭TriceMarie

I find the bigger the bag (although very handy for the amount of stuff you can fit in there) it's harder to find things..."my sack" it's been called once lol,u can always see me endlessly rumiging through it,finally finding what I what...I love big bags BUT hace nearly knocked plates or drinks off tables with them at times when geting up to leave&they are on my shoulder..or nearly knocked PEOPLE out with them when fiting through tight spaces like bus or plane :o:o lol :p

There was a time when I was younger when I would never bring a bag...phone in one pocket, purse in the other...but now I couldn't go without it...even WITH my bag one night in taxi on way home my phone slipt out...thank god the driver came up to me with it the next night!!:D

I genuinely don't know how I survived before I had my keys on the lanyard I use now. If I'm in a hurry in the morning I can just throw them around my neck and keep moving, rather than having to root around for space in my bag.

It might be big, but that doesn't mean it isn't organised.

As a matter of interest, who keeps a card or whatever with their phone number on it in their bag in case it gets misplaced or something?

I only ask because my Dad had his Coat stolen in Dublin a few days ago and got it and all his stuff (Everything basically) back because he had his Business Card in there.

If I lost my handbag (highly unlikely unless it got robbed off me since it's enormous) it would have my wallet in it, which has my business cards in it anyway. They'd also get my phone and could call my Mammy if they needed to :D This has happened to me before when I lost my phone - I left it in a changing room unknowingly and left the shop. 20 minutes later, my boyfriend at the time gets a phone call... looks at me confusedly and says "eh, do you have your phone? Your mother says you left it in a shop"

Cue a moment of severe confusion until I realised that the shop assistant called my mum, who then called the bf.

    Anyway! List:

    Wallet
    Phone
Keys (on a lanyard! Work keys, usb keys, Dublin keys, Donegal keys, and trolley tokens)
    iPod
    Book
    Notepad and pen
    Bus timetable
    deodorant
    perfume
    Nurofen
    tampons
    umbrella
    Sun cream (just this week!)
    various business cards
    a million bus refund tickets
a belt (not sure why that's in there actually)
    hairbrush
    hair ties
    sunglasses in a case

    Make up bag, containing:
    Foundation
    Powder
    Blusher
    powder brush
    2 different types of concealer
    mascara
    2 eyeliner pencils
    eyebrow pencil
    pencil sharpener
    lip gloss
    eyeshadow
    2 eyeshadow brushes

... and now, lots of liquid concealer all over my makeup bag. Opened the makeup bag to look and the top had come off. Balls.
