Took my summer clothes down from attic last night and was horrified to find the shorts I wore last year that were loose are now "snug"

Went down to the supermarket yesterday and stocked up on fruit and veg - i've nobody but myself to blame in all fairness - haven't been going to gym as often as I should and have been still eating same amount of rubbish.

    Roll on the "rabbit food"

Ah, sweet last-minute panic. Where would my diet be without it :o

Everyone packs on a little winter weight, to be fair. Soon you'll be sweating it all off as the weather gets warmer!

Though there's a problem.. it's also the season for ice cream, which is my current downfall. Damn tasty cold treats on hot summer days, it's like heaven, why does it have to have such dire consequences!?

Icepops probably have less consequences, and are more refreshing anyhow

Hey before ya leave on your fruit and veg fairytale just know that carbohydrates raise insulin which causes fat gain, fruits have lots of sugar. A diet of chicken, fish, broccoli and flax seed will do ya better

Forget the rabbit food. Try a high protein, moderate fat and low carb diet.

Lots of fish, lean meat, eggs, nuts, pulses and seeds. Minimum bread, pasta, rice and potatoes.

Throw in plenty of fruit and veg and you're away. Don't forget the exercise as well, no excuse in this weather!

I have the gym bag with me today - will do a post work workout.
    Bring on the burn!!

Thanks for all the ideas - love rice/pasta & spuds so i'm sorted.

OH is away during the week with work so there's no excuse for me not eating healthily.

    piscean wrote: »

Rice, pasta and spuds are some of the worst things you can have on a diet! You should cut them all completely if at all possible or have them in very small portions.

Brown rice is far better for you than white rice. With any food there is always a better alternative. Switch white rice for brown rice, fried rice with boiled rice etc.... rice , pasta and spuds are all full of carbs. Watch the supermarket ready made sauces, full of preservatives and so forth. Make them yourself and you can get rid of most of the rubbish that is put into the ready made ones.

Good luck with the diet! Oh and remember some fruit is far better for you than others...Oranges are full of vitamin C however have a very high sugar content. Apples are meant to be one of the better fruits for you however fruits have a certain amount of naturally occuring sugar in them. Always go for the best of the worst :)

Oh and +1 to the fish, lean meat (skinless chicken cooked on a george foreman is yummy, it is amazing how much sh*t comes out of chicken, and this is what you consume when you fry it or use other similar cooking methods) and eggs.

    Sangre's advice is spot on.

No craziness diets. It's not sustainable. Maybe head on over to the fitness forum and read the stickies. It's possible to eat nice things and still lose weight. :)

edit: As was said: You should moderate your pasta, spuds and rice intake. Go for the brown pastas and brown basmati if you're eating rice.
Hey before ya leave on your fruit and veg fairytale just know that carbohydrates raise insulin which causes fat gain, fruits have lots of sugar. A diet of chicken, fish, broccoli and flax seed will do ya better

Fructose (the sugar in fruit) needs to be broken down by the liver before your can use it as an energy source and as such it's a slow release carb. In short, fruit is good.

twisters all the way! think theyre 1 weight watchers point, maybe 1.5. i love them :D

unfortunately i also love 99s & i seem to have eaten a lot of those lately!

salads can be handy, but you need to be careful of some dressings, some can loaded with calories you wouldnt even think of!butr youve gotta include some protein in your diet too, eg. a chicken breast mixed in with the salad or something.

& with weather like this we have no excuse for sitting inside, get out & go for some walks & enjoy the sunshine :)

Have you a fridge in work?

I just bring in what I had for dinner the night before a lot of the time. We have a fridge, microwave and toaster in the oifig. If I'm not brining stuff in I'll get a (nice) salad from the canteen.

for lunch i find bagels good, theyre not too bad for you (if you choose the correct ones) and theyre quite filling.

toasted bagel & extra light philadelphia = yum :)

Ugh, I'm feeling particularly flabby after the bank holiday weekend (too much bbq food!) so I'm trying to be good for the next while. Will be buying a load of fruit and veg this evening! And I love fish so eating that is no problem to me :)

-Chicken breast and rocket on whole grain bread

-Boiled eggs (these are easy to make ahead for the week and easy to pack)

    -mini carrots

-almonds (a handful is a good quantity) great for the skin!

    -Plain yoghurt

bagels are filled with empty carbs and don't have enough protein and fiber to keep you feeling full

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 214 ✭✭piscean

I've been bringing in salad with some salmon for lunch with a slice of brown bread.
The only thing is when bad weather comes again i'll crave hot food so I normally put on baked potatoes if I have something in oven the night before and bring in for my lunch next day.

Another option is to make homemade soup.

they have enough to keep me going when i eat them with an apple and maybe some salad, or chicken breast.

they fill me far more than a normal sandwich would.

& while i know weight watchers is not necessarily the best thing to measure food against, i know they have 2.5-3 WW points in them.

Also, don't be constricted by what you think you're supposed to have at certain meals. You don't have to have cereal at breakfast (in fact, if its a brand name its usually the worst option). For example I had tuna and cottage cheese on brown bread this morning. Sometimes I'll have muesli for dinner if I want a carb meal because I will be exercising.

Bring a big bag of mixed seeds with you to work. Great for snacking and adding to any salads you make or buy. Be careful you don't eat them all subconsciously at your desk.

Make these changes to your diet (gradually if you want) and you WILL lose your cravings for processed food and high sugar snacks. If I'm hungry between meals the last thing I'll want to eat will be a chocolate bar. I much prefer some fruit or a natural yoghurt.

Last two weeks I've made an effort to try and eat healthily. Things going well. This great weather we're having lately has made it easy though...i've no excuse not to exercise.
Today I walked to and from work 35min each way...and I walked home to my mums for lunch and back which is a 20 min walk each way.

Breakfast I ate porridge....lunch was salad, slices of roast beef (i was in my mums and she had a lovely cut of beef cooked), beetroot, tomato and a hard boiled egg. Dinner was mushy peas with chicken fillet and cauliflower with some chili sauce on the side.

Then I was feeling a little peckish so I had some fruit in a bowel all chopped up with natural yoghurt. I'm full now (probably a little TOO much fruit) but I'm really in a good mood these days which I would have to attirbute to the walking.

I always see doing exercise as being pro-active about my weight whereas if I focus only on the food, I'm a bloody bitch to live with!!!

I'm determined to keep it up...got a wedding to go to in 4 weeks.

My summer diet? Eat same stuff (possibly slightly less rubbish and slightly more fruit), run lots more. Suits me :)

How are the diets going ladies? :)

I'm week one on mine. I'm a vegetarian so a high protein diet is out for me as I don't eat meat and am allergic to nuts! Eggs is about as good as I get for protein.

One week down, many to go, I hate being a girl! My brother can eat all he wants and stays skinny. Fecker!!

Cottage cheese. Is the bomb for uping your protien intake as a veggie.
I add pineapple to eat it on its own. Or I add chives and mash into potato.

I'm working away at it. Little by little.
I joined a challenge on this other website I use. Have lost a half a stone in the last 3 weeks.
Holidays in two weeks though. So hope I don't go awol then.

Hope bloke advice is permitted. I've always had a sweet tooth and one winter in particular put on loads of weight. The next summer i was chatting to a girl at work who eats like a pig and she never puts on an ounce. I said how do you do it? She said don't snack between meals, drink loads of water, but here is the key...DON'T EAT AFTER SIX O'CLOCK. I swear I did it and lost well over a stone in six weeks. Had a bowl of cereal for brekkie. Ham sandwich (brown bread), bar or crisps and yoghurt for lunch. Big dinner (e.g. spuds, chicken, veg) at 6. Then drank water in the evening. If I felt the urge I had a low calorie hot chocolate. Walking to/from work heps too!

You're a bit limited there alright. As moonbaby said, cottage cheese is great for protein. The protein in cottage cheese is absorbed slowly too so keeps you feeling full for longer. If you're not mad about the taste of it, blend it into some sugar free jelly for a sweet mousse type thing. Nyom!

I use unflavoured whey a lot (little miss muffet, sat on her tuffet....:)). Have a look on the fitness forum for a healthy pancakes recipe which I'd have most mornings for brekkie. Unflavoured whey is something you'd need to order online so not quite as practical as cottage cheese.

Are you allergic to all nuts? What about seeds?

edit: That not eating after 6pm thing isn't a great idea. You're effectively fasting for 12-14 hours a day. You'd be better spreading your calories more evenly throughout the day.

Also, well done moonbaby. Half a stone in 3 weeks is a really healthy weight loss.

ok, this is ridiculously long now. /me stops.

I'm still plodding along, losing around 1/2 - 1lb a week. I'm happy enough with that at the minute, as at least it's consistent (though I am eating a hot buttered scone typing this :p)

try switching all the white carbs you eat to brown so to wholegrain rice pasta and bread. Add sunflower seeds and seasame seeds to salads. Make your dinner as early as you can. I am no slim jim but have losst a few lbss in the last month on unislim

Yeah most of my summer clothes from last year don't fit me. But that's from changing pills and putting on a good bit of weight due to that. Boohoo. Dunno if I'll be able to lose it. Or I just can't really be bothered. Loads of motivation coming from me anyway! I applaud anyone who can stick to diets!

Unfortunately sugar free jelly isn't veggie. Or at least the kind you can mix isnt.

I'm trying a high protien low carb diet atm and have found it very possible. I think most veggies are carb junkies, so I expected it to be harder (Only on day 3 mind...) My weight is definately affected by my carb intake. I could have a lovely healthy salad and bulk it up with garlic bread. I could survive on chips alone if it wasn't for the good influence of my OH.

Currently, I'm eating a lot of egg and quorn (has very few carbs.) If I didn't eat quorn, I wouldn't be able to do it TBH, but I'm finding it easy enough. Missed my toast this morning though.

Have also heard you tend to get an energy slump a few days after cutting down carbs. Nothing yet, feeling pretty ok. Looking forward to my mushroom & cheese omlette at lunchtime. :D

Thanks Helena, I must admit too if I didn't have Quorn vegetarian life in general wouldn't be easy.

I tried cottage cheese lastnight, good Lord it's disgusting! Anyone got any tips on how to make it taste less vile?? Anything I could add to it. I saw online that you could add fruit etc but the thought of that makes me sick. Knew there had to be a catch, it's horrible stuff, who would want to eat it?!

get a twin packet of sugarfree jelly any flavour you like (i prefer raspberry),
get a pack/punnet or two of raspberries
    carton of cottage cheese
make up the jelly with a bit of boiling water and add cold to cool it down. I make this dessert with half the normal amount of water cos i am gonna add the cottage cheese to it....
when jelly has cooled add cottage cheese and blend really really well with a hand blender jobby....
pour in to individual dishes or lunchboxes in which the raspberries line the bottom and let cool in the fridge...... its really yummy AND healthy and easy!

For me I have 2 dark rye Ryvita (about 30 cals a slice) topped with low fat cream cheese, cherry tomatoes and cucumber. Also have a couple of pieces of fruit and about a handful of nuts or seeds. If I feel hungry between meals I'll drink water or have another piece of fruit.
I started doing this "diet" about 5 weeks ago and have lost 7lb so far. I'm a bread fiend but have stopped eating it altogether and have cut back hugely on my pasta/potato intake. I find the Ryvita (just about) satisfies my bread cravings.

Oh dear, just read and deleted my last post, me and him on the booze, sense out the window . Anyway the bit about the fish is true , unfashionable fish like mackerel and sardines (one tin of each per week ) will pack up your proteins etc. You can garnish the fish with anything / try onions, peppers .
Diets can run us down easily if we are not careful so i believe fish is a good idea if you can take the taste ....twice a week , easy. :)

Yeah, when I get sick it's usually when I'm trying to lose weight. An oul' multivitamin goes a long way. Plenty of protein is useful too.

I'm fine except for my tummy, I really wish I had the motivation to get it a bit more flat.
All I do for exercise is horseriding, and havent done that in quite some time due to my pony being injured, so I'm only getting back to it now...
I can't stand doing sit ups...they're no fun at all and I always forget about them... I need to find a hobby!

As regards to food...I've lately realised that I actually LOVE cream...:(
