What in your opinion is considered the best poker achievement to date? Reason why I ask is because I overheard two ass donks last night talking about Chan's back to back main event wins in 87 and 88, followed by a 2nd place finish in 89.

Thought it would be an interesting topic.

Stu ungar winning main event 1980 1981 and then to come back and win it in 1997, i wasn't around the early 80s but have read and watched alot on him and i think this was some achievement even if the fields wer'nt as big back then, also claims 1980 was the first time he played texas hold em:eek:

    Raymer 04/05 for WSOP ME

Yeah I thought of this before I even read your your reply Richie.

Phenominal back to back performance imo, and if his kings hadn't been raped by a tard catching a back door flush it could have been better.

Harrington final tabling 2 years in a row is a pretty mean feat imo...
Raymer has to be the winner though cos he took it down and then got raped by the tardo that hasnt bee heard of since.

Anyone who can start and the micros and grind their way up to the point where they earn a more than comfortable living at midstakes+, especially today, takes alot more work and is a bigger achievementn than winning some tournament imo

Raymer's run was fantastic but to say if only he hadn't gotten dogged on the last hand etc seems a bit short sighted.
In Theory, he could have dogged people left, right and center to make as deep as he did that year, or the year before, only a small sample was televised.

It would have to be Doyle Brunson, he's been winning at the highest level forever and he is now in his seventies and holding his own. He also has a few of them bracelets.

Marty Smyth after signing with that poker firm within 9 months winning
    The World Poker Open
    The WSOP PLO Championship event
Then winning the Poker Million from having 1 & 1/2 big blinds (the 3rd consecutive poker million final he had made)

For me its a flip between Raymer's 04/05 run in the main event and Helmuth's constant stream of Hold'em bracelets.

I also like Harrington's back to back FT appearances in 03/04

I think Dan Harrington making back to back final tables, and Greg Raymer making a deepl run the year after winning the main event was pretty impressive.

Scotty Nguyen winning the HORSE event was pretty good given he was completely out off his face bolloxed drunk! Main Event and HORSE bracelet is pretty impressive in fairness thou.

Ivan Demidov's run in the WSOP Main Event and WSOPE Main Event are very good. Andy Black blowing his chip lead in the Main Event 06 was pretty impressive aswell :p

Sure there is others but just cant think of them at the moment.

is this raymer nonsense one giant level. i think that can be attributed directly to variance and isn't impressive really at all. all the big name tourny pros who have multiple wsop and wpt, ept titles and final tables crush raymer. durrr, jman, antonius and others owning dizzying stakes at young ages and turning the old timers inside out is also considerably more impressive. and then to answer the question even more simply, phil ivey.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 657 ✭✭✭BuChan

in fairness it's possible that tj cookier pips all those guys.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,156 ✭✭✭cuterob

    lol donkaments

all the cash pro's who put hundreds of hours and are now making more than tourney players will ever is a lot more of an achievement than getting lucky a couple of times in a bingo

Carlos Mortensen, WSOP main event winner, WPT World championship winner, back to back Sunday Millions on stars. The last achievement mentioned is pretty sick.

as a tournie player and cash donk I have to confess that lads making huge amounts in cash over a long period is far more impressive than running well in eight consecutive tournaments or whatever. but you can't really single out any clear 'achievement' in cash, as its more of a gradual thing. I did think watching Durr only lose 600 odd K in the cash game against Antonius, given their respective holdings, was pretty fcking impressive. But then again bluescouse...
