Now ...which of the current crop of cars, one that you can buy off the peg and for ordinary Joe Soap money (say under 40 k) can actually be considered cool?

Other than the Fiat 500 (Abarth) I can't think of one ...

Octavia VRS or Leon Cupra? thinking a little outside the box from the usual suspects in that type of car (GTi, ST)

Here's the thing. I'm not british. Therefore I don't see a need to constantly whinge on about how glorious the E-Type looks. Therefore it's not cool. It's trying too hard.

Quite a broad definition of cool here, from a girlie Defender to a BL rustbucket.
Any car that has been produced for the purpose of a TV show or movie is uncool by definition. That includes the De Lorean...
This, on the other hand, is cool in an "If you have to ask, you wouldn't understand" way.

I'm sorry, but I was speaking before to a good looking girl with big knockers about Mr. T and the A-Team van. She says they're cool. I'd prefer a girl with big knockers definition of cool rather than some internet dude who thinks a Bristol that kind of looks like the over-weight lovechild of a Mk2 Escort and Opel Manta is cool.

Nope, sorry. The Octavia more so is very far from cool. Audi's aren't cool either. At least any produced after 1992.

Maybe its just a thing for big black guys and nothing to do with the cars at all...In all fairness I'd fancy my chances of pulling with the Bristol thanks :D

Really? You'd only pull a pompus old geezer who worked on the production line. Fair enough if you like that kind of thing. I prefer girls myself. No girl I ever met uttered the words "you know what's cool? A bristol!".

OK... lets test it! Open a thread in the Ladies lounge with a picture of the Bristol and the A-Team van and a poll for which they think is cool. One option for the bristol, one for the van and one for neither.
(better put only women may vote on it!)

Like I said, there's a broad definition of "cool" here. If I'd known this was about impressing Sharon and Britney down the estate with a car "offa de telly", obviously the black GM van would trump the Bristol.

    That 507 is beautiful, BTW!

I think you will find that a Jag XJ or a S-Class Merc is an old geezers car.

The fact that most women and most men (even so called car enthusiasts) wouldn't know a Bristol if it ran them over makes them somewhat cool. Also the attention to detail that goes into the design and layout of the cars, also makes them interesting and cool. They do not court the limelight either unlike virtually all other (vain and pretentious) motor manufacturers, that also makes them cool.

A car doesn't have to be a babe magnet to be cool. In reality the person themselves has to be cool and the car merely complements same (and good taste), not tries to compensate for the lack of it. And anyway a classy lady would be far more impressed with a car that is wonderfully understated and reeks of old-money, than any of todays generic supercars driven by the nouveau-riche. Most modern Ferraris, Lambos et al would only impress chavs, ladettes, hairdressers and beauticians.

    Dodge Charger is NOT cool.
    Ford Fiesta is NOT cool.
    NO SKODA is cool.
    Dodge Viper is kinda cool...
    Jag E Type is cool.
    A-Team van is cool.
    Seat Cupra not cool.
Old Auto Union car is cool.
Smart car (in that example) NOT cool.
A-Team VW van is cool. Because it's a VW van of that generation moreso than anything.
**** Lancia posted by SaabEd NOT cool.
Mercedes GL not cool, just obscene.
Ferrari (that an F50?) - eh ya got me, don't like ferrari but it's cool.
Jag XK8 - ~98-02 generation, don't know why but I guess it's cool. Last of the true british jaguar before Ford dug out the Vaseline...
    BMW 507 cool.

    Stratos10.jpg
Lancia Stratus, group B rally car. Fookin hardcore, seriously cool.

You see there's the thing. I agree with the principal on why there's appeal to the Bristol. But cool is shallow. Thats why we have to throw away our petrol-headedness when we quantify what's "cool".
The Bristol is interesting, and cool to a group of people who know what it is. But unfortunately those people are in a subset of a bigger group called "uncool". That's why the Bristol is uncool.

So by your rationale been well informed or having discernment makes you uncool. Cool only applies to a small section who are somewhat unknowing and superficial.

Let me put it another way. Neil Armstrong is cool. He walked on the moon. Mr. Joseph A. Bloggs who re-engineered some weird part of the Saturn rocket in order to make it actually work better so that Neil could go to the moon unfortunately isn't cool. He might be a genious, but cool he isn't.
James Webb isn't cool. He has a telescope in the making that'll be put into orbit that'll show us new and fantastic things, but that doesn't matter to poor old James's coolness. For some reason Bruce Willis is cool. I don't like Die Hard, I'm not much of a fan of his, but that doesn't make him any less cool.
