Stuck in the System

I've noticed that the forum has gone very quiet recently, mainly I think because nothing is really happening at the moment, and the lack of information is making me, for one, deflated about my prospects of starting the new career that I want so badly.
Like alot of other people who post on here, it is now one year since I applied to join AGS. Other people have applied before I did, and it must be particularly heartbreaking to be seemingly wasting your life waiting for something that is still nowhere in sight.
Granted, this situation could change at any stage. Maybe they will open the doors again in August. Maybe they wont.

Special mention for those who are waiting to apply. Who knows when they will get a chance. Not a nice situation to be in either.
But now, I'm starting to wonder if I am ever going to get there. If I have wasted the last year of my life on a dream that is never going to be a reality. The waiting would not be so bad if I had some concrete information.

*cue blaming the government for all that is wrong with this process.

But not so, because before the recruitment moratorium we never got much concrete information from HR either.

I know that if I do finally get in that undoubtedly the waiting will have been completely worthwhile and I will forget about the almost torturous process to get there. And of course there is the school of thought that the process is part of the training, to teach (or perhaps test) your patience.

So in honour of it being one year on since the last round of applications, this thread is for those of us who are stuck in the system.

Vent, rant, shout, cry whatever. But at least we are in it together. :o

    Sorry for the long post.

    Nice thread to start.

Still I wouldn't say it was a waste, you're going to get in regardless, it's just going to take that bit longer.

Wouldn't be at all surprised if people get called for:
    August
    :D

    Hey Paudie,

    What stage are you at?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 134 ✭✭Paudie223

Yo. Hows the form? I am from May Batch 1, I had my interview August 11th. Got a letter the following week saying i was successful. Hadnt heard anything for a few months so I rang HR in Jan and again in Feb. They said my checks were complete and my form was waiting to be approved, nothing since :( Very annoying not knowing where u stand, I cant plan to go travelling or anything! The whole system needs to be made more transparent. What about you I'm listening?

From May batch 1 also, finished everything back in October. It's been a long wait!!
I know! Everything is put on hold, you can't plan anything. Finished college in 2 weeks, not sure what to do then, just hoping I hear something in June.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 134 ✭✭Paudie223

I applied in May 2008 and I was in the middle of sitting my final exams, i thought that after i passed the interview it would only be a couple of months. Im lucky i got a good job only a couple of months after finishing college but its not what i want to do. I wouldnt ind doing a spot or travelling before i go into the Gardai (thats if i pass everything else) but can't because i could be called while im away! Bummer!!

From what i heard there is a batch ready to be signed off on by the minister. The college have been notified for an intake in august providing the minister signs off on it. recruitment are hoping All will be medicaled and will do physicals. The go ahead for this might not happen till mid july but its expected to go through. Its a matter of when not if. As for the other board set up by some moron saying that this group will be scrapped on june 1st is utter nonsense to get people worried.

    Finally another optimist ;)

Agreed that thread is very weird, especially because the person who set it up was on their first post, obviously a boards regular who decided to create a new account.

I can only tell you what i heard. But i an not talking crap like some. Chins up people. It will happen. For the first time in a long time i'm optimistic and excited about this news. Ps don't believe what you read in papers. Its all speculation and not fact. Recruitment where told last september me the moratorium and have had 3 intakes since.

Hi Andy, do you mind me asking how you know this? Is it a reliable source? thanks ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14 anydaynow

As i said its not definate for august. Has to be signed off first but it is a reliable source. Put it this way. I was going to move to oz with my bro and am staying put now. Most optimistic i've been in a long time.

I have been told much the same by a retired member who still keeps in touch, he told me that there will be at least another 100 going down this year.

As for the rumour that anyone stuck in the system will have to start all over again, this is rubbish, there was a similar rumour just before the may group went down, saying that the may intake was scrapped. I don't know how long we will be waiting, i am waiting on med and physical, but I would think it will be no longer a year, there are estimated to be 1400 retirements this year, roughly 10% of the force, this is massive, they are going to need new recruits, so why would they scrap people that are nearly there and that money has already been spent on, won't happen

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 134 ✭✭Paudie223

your obviously very confident so Andy if you put off Oz. You do hear alot on this website. Wouldnt know what to believe. Has anyone else heard of an august intake?

Was talking a friend of mine, his mum works in the budgeting depatmeny for AGS, he was telling me that with no NEW RECRUITMENT drive till 2011 that they hope yo use all of those in the system to fill any vacncies over the coming years. the moratorium exists for new drives only. Hopefully this means good news for us still waitng. He, hiomself is hoping to apply in 2011 and has to wait but says things are very positive for the rest of us here. Fingers crossed people but its looking positive. :D:D:D

hey guys, anyone been on to HQ lately.
jobless from tomorrow and still praying for august, prob a long shot at this stage although when i was on to HQ last week they said they wont know for def till mid july and sometimes only find out the day before the intake.
He also said they're pushing all the way for an intake at some stage this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 583 ✭✭✭I'm listening

I've set a deadline for myself, Mid July. If there's no word of an intake, time to face the facts and do other things and forget about the process for a year or two!

No point putting everything on hold. ;)

Never put anything on hold while waiting for your application to be processed. Do whatever you had planned and if a position comes up, take it.

    O I know,

I mean like travel and stuff, just finished college and couldn't plan a long trip away encase a call came for August. Which would mean cutting a holiday short and probably coming back broke!

Ah see what happens I guess

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,128 ✭✭✭Geri Boyle

You kind of have to put your life on hold though. Like, I cant move in with my boyfriend coz if and when I go to Templemore he wont be able to afford rent on his own, so what do we do? Wait for 2 (or more maybe) years to move in together? Then when do we get married and start having babies? Thats gonna be prob 4 years coz i cant go to Templemore pregnant or worse, leave a newborn for the week! I just started a new job and have to sign a contract next wk. I kinda feel like im getting further away from it..

Whatever you do, don't let the boyfriend see this, you'll probably scare him :D

Fingers crossed, we get news soon, anything will do, even saying no more intakes for a year or two will do (will be disappointing tho) but least we know where we stand

With all due respect, did these things not occur to you before you applied? Even if you are accepted and pass out of Templemore, do you think getting married and having children will be easy when working on a Garda's roster?

Blue Belle, you either want it as a career for life or not. Like having children and a husband, being a Garda is something that you will have forever, in a sense because they say Gardai never really retire! So, if it is a job you want for your future, you'll continue waiting or go through it again to get it.. just like having kids.

Don't let the doubt creep in. Keep it shut out of your mind. You've waited this long, wait some more. If you can't see yourself ever in another line of work/career path.. you'll stick with it.

I'm waiting the last 7 years to just apply. Don't take the position your in for granted.

:-D He's complaining about it more than I am! He's very supportive but its fair to say that being in the system definitely has a huge impact on your life from planning holidays to planning your whole life really.. That said I saw 2 female guards pass by in DunLaoghaire earlier and such a pang of envy overcame me so its definitely what I want, I'd just like to know when!

I know what youre saying eroo, and I'm not saying I regret my decision. Far from it. Im just replying to the Nog saying not to let it affect your life. It does end of. And being a Garda does not mean you cant live with the person you love! Or get married and have kids! Its just trying to map out your life after your training ends, when you dont know when it is going to begin is very difficult! Thats all. Its just a little rant, theres nothing coming between me and my application ;)

Yes but surely you thought about the training process and the effects it would have on your personal life?

Well keep your rants in here... next time I read you saying ''your better off not in the process'' over in the 'Applying..' thread.. yer getting a smack across the arse!;):p

No I'll look on until I get my chance to apply. If you can't stand the waiting, then let someone else have a turn. If it is the career you want so very very much.. waiting will not be an issue. You can look at it like this.. or you can look on it as a barrier to going on holidays, personal developments etc.

I don't wish to appear arrogant about something I'm not going through, but you guys and gals don't realise how lucky ye are to have the ball rolling. All through secondary school I just wanted to be a Garda, and I still do. However I will wait as long as it takes as I know it's the career I want.. ye should feel the same way.

    WOW

Ok let me back track a little bit so. If you are making non life changing plans such as taking another job, travelling, going to college then go for it, but if making massive life changing plans such as moving in with Blue Belle, getting married to Blue Belle or having babies with Blue Belle then RUN, FORREST, RUN

I don't care who your comments are directed at. There are quite a few of those who are 'stuck in the system' having little rants in all the threads in this forum. I'm not saying you are one of them.. you may be, you may not. But if they feel it is ok to vent about waiting in the system in the Medical thread, Applying thread, PCT thread or even the Reserve threads then I feel it only right for me to vent in their thread about how it feels to be waiting to simply apply.

Keep your opinions to yourselves rather than post negative comments when someone inquires about joining. I for one am sick of it. I do feel for you all, and I mean that sincerely but don't turn every thread that has something to with the process into a free for all about how the 'system is crap'.

Use this thread to vent, not every thread in the Recruitment forum. It's not fair to those of us waiting or even people simply inquiring about joining. Your not the first to go through the system and you certainly wont be the last(I hope to be in it).

That's my 2c, take it or leave it.

Kid? I'm not a kid. Just because I am 18 years of age, doesn't put you any higher than me.;)

Don't worry, I take very few things to heart, life is too short to do such a thing.

Take a deep breath and exhale. Getting way too carried away now. Your directing your anger at the wrong person GROWN MAN, never once criticized the system.

This is a pointless argument anyway, lets leave it.
