I can't but my OH says he can- I don't believe him. It's impossible, if I try I just think of myself trying to stop thinking!

    So, can you?

but don't you have to think of stuff like running barefoot through a field made of bare breasts, to reach a higher plane of conscious?

Nope, I've usually a couple of streams of thought going at any one time. It's a hoor when I need to concentrate.

You should practice it, it's a valuable skill

    Edit: http://books.google.ie/books?id=IJzQS7jvom4C&dq=yoga+sutras+of+patanjali&printsec=frontcover&source=bn&hl=en
One of the earliest record of Yoga we have, "Yoga is the intentional stopping of the spontaneous fluctuations of the mind"

Double edit: http://www.patanjali.ch/pys_2.html , here's a few translations, hard to get the message across from the sanskrit

I can completely zone out, looking deep in thought. If anyone asks what I'm thinking about I have absolutely no idea.

I think it's more of a male thing isn't it

No, you're thinking of sexual fantasies.

One way of meditating is by getting into a trance-like state by counting. You count until a thought enters your head, then you reset the count, and this continues until it is just the count that exists. Some people use a 'mantra' which is a personal sound or word instead of a number count.

You can do it. It's very hard at first. I concentrate my breathing and or visualise things that require concentration.

When your mind begins to quieten, you can empty your mind completely. I still have the odd thought creeping in but apparently, there are people that can keep a blank mind for hours. I'd love to be able to do that. It would take a hell of a lot of dedication and effort though.

On that note; welcome to AH Rose Bush...

No, I can never stop thinking. Regardless of what I use to cure it. This should be hauled over to PI tbh. But hes either dying for some, or theres something on his mind he doesnt feel ready to talk to you about, which in turn causes temp insomnia. If its annoying you, I dunno... /chloroform

But don't you have to think about counting, therefore haven't stop thinking?

No. The counting is the pathway to thinking of nothing, which later leads to
    restful sleep. So there! :p

Technically yes, however if you're beginning you probably need some sort of device to aid you, one of the aims in some disciplines is to become one-pointed in concentration rather than to not think. Besides "not interfere" would be a better term than "not think"
