Can you just sit there/ lie there and think of nothing when ur fully awake??
I can't but my OH says he can- I don't believe him. It's impossible, if I try I just think of myself trying to stop thinking!

One way of meditating is by getting into a trance-like state by counting. You count until a thought enters your head, then you reset the count, and this continues until it is just the count that exists. Some people use a 'mantra' which is a personal sound or word instead of a number count.

You can do it. It's very hard at first. I concentrate my breathing and or visualise things that require concentration.

When your mind begins to quieten, you can empty your mind completely. I still have the odd thought creeping in but apparently, there are people that can keep a blank mind for hours. I'd love to be able to do that. It would take a hell of a lot of dedication and effort though.

Technically yes, however if you're beginning you probably need some sort of device to aid you, one of the aims in some disciplines is to become one-pointed in concentration rather than to not think. Besides "not interfere" would be a better term than "not think"

I think the thinking goes that counting becomes an automatic thing so thinking about counting doesn't count as thinking. But if you ever realised that you were thinking about counting, then that would count, and your count would have to reset from the beginning.

Technically you are thinking about breathing in and out, and your brain is even thinking about every heartbeat it makes, so technically the only way you can stop thinking is when you are dead.

I can think of blackness for maybe 5 seconds, but that's the limit. After that The numbers come in, counting, then the mind deviates and starts thinking about.... stuff. Guns, metal, upcoming holidays, spaceships, anything.... but nothing.
