Hope i post this in the correct forum.
My car was broken into last night outside a pub i went to.I drove to the pub thinking i was going to have a coke but ended up having a few beers so obvisiously left the car there.
When i went to get my car today it was burned out.Basicly destroyed.I cant believe this has happened.I rang the guards and my insurance company and am waiting to hear back.
Can anyone help me in explaining what will happen now?

insurance company will investigate it to ensure it wasnt an "inside" job :D

they will check for cctv etc etc which may delay the claim process but they are checking everything now because of the amount of car "thefts" and cars disappearing.

    hope you get sorted ASAP.

With most insurance co's, that won't effect your No Claims and you won't have to pay an "excess".
You'll have to ask the insurers what you're entitled to (car hire etc.)

And what will happen about replacing or getting a new car??

    Hope this goes quick

They probabaly will investigate as kceire says.

But if everything gets smoothed over with them, they'll offer you what they think the car would have been worth before it was burned out

Not to sure if this is correct but I believe every car has what's called the book price. It a guide garages and insurance companies use to value cars. Say your car is worth "book value" 10 grand and you insure it for 40 grand. If you are getting paid by the insurance company they will only give you the book value 10 grand.
    Think this is true.

    Yeah, this is right.
Although, sometimes they will offer to try source a similar car for you.
If your car is '09, '08 and sometimes '07 reg, they might get you a brand spanking new one

Did the Gardai take the car?
It's criminal damage by fire (Arson) so the Guards will have a technical examination done on the car to try to get some evidence. The insurance co will prob be looking for a copy of the exam report too.
A lot a fraudulant claims happening at the moment so they're looking at everything very carefully

sorry to hear about that op. I had my car broken into and around the corner is a golf (98/00 model) burnt out. I hope you get the claim sorted. I just got a settled cheque today for mine but it doesn't cover all the damages!

    Sorry to hear OP.

TBH, I'd say with the amount of repossed cars the banks have, you could end up having something similar dropped of to your door rather than cash to buy a new one. Here's hoping everything works out.

Have insurance companies started offering replacement cars? Usually you just get the Glass's guide book value. You can sometimes argue a slightly higher figure as their first offers are usually low

The insurance company will probably pay the finance company and not you, as they are the owners of the car.

They'll only pay out what the market value is. You should get the 8k to buy an equivalent.

What about if i go to a main dealer and ask him to give me the value of the exact model etc ??Obviously a main dealer will be more..

was your car parked beside any vans or anything ?

my dad had his van broken into a few years ago and torched, but their was several butane tanks in the back so both cars either side got burned also...

they couldn't get the van itself driving so they burned it out ! - Took his trade when they done it... the tool in the back where actually worth more then the van, but thats how life goes i guess.

Ring your insurance company - Now
They will tell you what you are entitled to
If the car is less than one year old you may have a clause in which you get a replacement.
If not then you may be entitled to car hire for a period of time.

Your insurance company are the only peple who will be able to tell you.
It should be on your policy too - give it a read.

Oh and sorry to hear what happened - was it just torced where u left it?

Its 2005 and i can geta hire car for 2 weeks but the gardai told me it will take more than that to sort out.Wouldnt normally leave it were i left it ,but the brother was staying over so he parked in my space

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 9,982 ✭✭✭mik_da_man

Well I would take the car hire anyway for as long as you can.
Have a look on carzone for similar cars so you know what to expect when the Ins Company ring.
And remember you can reject their offer and hold out for a higher one. I've heard of this working.
Apart from that you may have to get the bus for a while - or try to buy something cheap to get you around.

Hope it works out for ya
