I'm borrowing money to get my hair done today, even though there's feck all food in the fridge :o

Without harping on about the "r" word (zzzzz) what have you given up/cut back on and what will be the last thing to go?

Take away coffees are long gone for me, as are regular lunches out with the ladies (tea and biccies @ home instead anyone?) and shopping just cos its payday :(

My hair and bikini wax are staying, no contest!

What about you guys? (or gals even :pac:)

Well, the waxing went out the window the minute I lost my job. Back to shaving the legs & underarms and trimming the other.

I got my hair cut at a hairdressing college for 15 euro. It took for bloody ever (about 2 hours!!) but the cut turned out fine.

I shall be ordering hair dye online (can't get the colour I want in the shops here anyway) and possibly getting some highlights done at the hairdressing college as well, but not until May, probably.

I've always done my own eyebrows and would get manicures and pedicures quite rarely altogether so nothing much has changed there I suppose.

However, I am running out of my benefit "honey.... snap out of it!" scrub and I'm REALLY upset. I love that stuff - it's sooo good at exfoliating and yet it somehow softens as well. My skin is very difficult to deal with. And yet I just can't justify the price tag, which runs about what our weekly food budget is.

Hmm, not necessarily girly but, going out was the first one to go for me! Also buying clothes and makeup for the sake of it, that's out the window.

I don't colour my hair anyway, so no cost there... it REALLY needs cut though! All my de-fuzzing is done at home... I guess I don't really have too many "girly" expenses!

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 17,231 Mod ✭✭✭✭Das Kitty

Nope, no girly expenses here really. I'm usually more likely to spend my dosh on a few books or DVD box sets.

Get my hair cut on average twice a year, I use chemist moisturisers, exfoliators etc. I have a few nice makeup bits, but on average I only need new foundation once a year so the €25 isn't going to bankrupt me.

I suppose my main luxuries are my hobbies, I could easily spend €100 on fabric and patterns.

I suppose I don't really feel a pinch mostly as if I'm low on cash my brain kicks into preservation mode and I'm just not interested in shopping anymore. Quite handy!

Take Away Coffees, Buying Dvds & Books, Trashy Magazine or well any magazines atall.
Have tried plucking my own eyebrows (thankfully im fair) but it hurts too damn much so looks like that will have to stay, waxing is staying too, although the salon i go to closed down becasue of the "r" word so on the hunt for new salon atm.
Gym membership is also definitely staying! *(dont want to part with the compliments on looking good :D )*
Biggest expenditure is eating out with the girls but all that stops today because i need to save my money for a course i want to do.
Thankfully im all set for makeup so I shouldnt have to sacrafice anything there.

gave up goin out, cant even afford the cinema! :( impulse buying, no more arty/tattoo magazines, no more tattoos, random road trips, cant afford to go back home to meath, oil heating, nice food and yummy treats, getting my hair cut, and my boyfriend has even given up using his car and his insurance

    how depressing...

I think I might get my hair cut less often and learn how to trim my fringe myself. It can't be that difficult surely (I hope!).

I was going to get my legs waxed at the salon soon, but I think I'll instead buy a pot of sticky goo and some Nurofen and do it myself.

I won't be able to give up on buying nice food. Not a particularly girly thing, but I have to have nice bread instead of sliced pan, that sort of thing.

    +1
No more girly cocktails in the Westin for me! (Well, maybe once every blue moon or so...)
Can't believe I ever indulged in girly magazines. All those euros to make yourself feel empty, lightheaded with the non information overload and fat...
Random blowdrys out the window too, eating out a lot less, facials are a thing of the past and clothes/makeup splurges are pretty rare. This the the most depressing message I may ever post

I used to buy Vogue every month, but I found out the college library gets it in so I read it in there! I love to eat out for lunch or go for tea with my girlfriends, never get to see them anymore, but that's totally gone now!
Unfortunately, I cannot curb my gig spending! As soon as I get paid I'm buying tickets, but my excuse it that it relates to my college course ;)

I don't know how much the Benefit one is but I can suggest a really really good body scrub from Boots that somehow seems to soften as well as exfoliate. Its called Melon Mint & Sugar and is their own brand and comes in a massive jar!. They also have a wheatgerm and something else one but the Melon Mint and Sugar is much nicer. Hope its not too expensive now. :)

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 17,231 Mod ✭✭✭✭Das Kitty

Honey one is for your face, I've tried the boots one and I don't find it great. Smells gorgeous, but doesn't exfoliate my extremities very well ;)

I actually have the melon & mint sugar scrub from boots. I find it ok - but I feel a little slimey after I suppose would be the best description. I will definitely try to get something different next time but I'm going to use this one up.

Das Kitty is correct... the benefit scrub is for my face. And I love it :(

Lunch is now brought in everyday,
Magazine are bought once in a blue moon now,
Can't justify spending cash on the waxing, going to invest in an epilator (on that note currys in lisburn have one for £48, down here they're charging €130!!)
Gone back to being a brunette instead of the highlights,
Only buy clothes now when I really need to, same for cosmetics, no trying of the new amazing products..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,928 ✭✭✭✭rainbow kirby

I don't have much in the way of girly expenses at all. I don't wear make-up or use fake tan, the only moisturiser I use is a cheap Olay one with SPF 15 for when I run, I don't buy clothes or shoes that often, and I use cheap-ass shampoo and shower gel. I'm working at home on my FYP at the moment so I don't have much in the way of lunch or coffee expenses.

About the only thing I could cut back on is to get my hair cut less often, but I could flip that around and go short enough to be able to use a barber.

I find this SO hard to do. It doesn't matter what I bring in, I invariably don't want to eat it come lunchtime. So I just end up not eating.

The very best exfoliator I've ever tried is a handful of sea salt mixed with either olive or almond oil. Nothing commercially available has done as good a job or left my skin softer, and I've tried them all.

For the face, mix the olive/almond oil with some granulated sugar, and its as good as the Benefit one, which I've tried. The more sugar, the grainier the scrub.

    NOTHING

I wasnt bestowed the looks of Hedi Klum, therefore I have to work hard on looking presentable. I mostly do DIY's
But feck that - if the sh*t does hit the fan I dont want to look like it hit me instead.

Truth is girls (even if you wont admit it openly) you do feel (bit) better if you have make up on and nice (clean) top

i dont really have that many expenses..

    - makeup: i only wear it going out so it lasts me pretty long, i dont mind buying an expensive foundation once a year

    - beauty treatments: ive never waxed cause im too afraid of the pain so i just shave, the only thing i do is get my eyebrows & eyelashes done cause im blonde, but it makes such a huge difference to my face & its not too expensive, i can spare the 20euro every couple of months.

    - lunches: i go to the supermarket monday lunchtime & get the makings of my lunches for the week & leave them in the fridge in work. usually costs 10-15, but that includes my breakfast too. although thats all more for diet rather than cheapness.

    - magazines: i do buy a magazine once or twice a week but i feel no guilt cause i used to spend the best part of 10euro every day on breakfast/lunch/magazine, so i allow myself a magazine every now & then

the only thing im really bad at is impulse clothes buying. going for a wander around the shops at lunch & just using the laser card.

I have changed the morning take away coffee to a homemade one in my flask :p My house move really aided that though as I'm a 10 min walk from the office.

I try to bring in lunch but I'll be better at that when I'm completely settled and organised into the house.

I now always go for the shampoo on offer whenever I need some.

I don't buy that much make up so nothing to really cut down on there.

Last thing I'd cut out, food I suppose, if it's desperate times then food is more important than lippy :p

I'm very very lucky, when the OH cooks dinner he does chicken breasts for the next day, so I have this and a salad that I put together in the morning, add some fruit, nuts and a yogurt and I'm sorted. It's easy enough once you get into a routine.
    Oh there's a few more...
    • Get my moisturer in Duty free in bulk
    • Get my foundation (No.7 brush yoke) when i get a Boots money off voucher
    • Buy the shower gel/ shampoo/conditioner thats on special

That would probably be a bit too greasy for me as I have acne prone skin, but I am considering attempting to make my own scrub out of almonds, oatmeal and honey. I googled a few recipes there over the weekend so I'll try them out.

You know, I find the supermarkets cheaper than pound city for shampoo and conditioner.

Also if you buy your bog roll in bulk on special you can get it for next to nothing, even cheaper if you'll go for the peach coloured stuff.

Bought Lidl sensitive shower cream the other day and it's grand, no scent either. And like 1.50E :p

Have cut down a lot on coffees out, magazines, books etc. I go to the library once a week to get books as they get a lot of new ones in, and magazines too. Oh, and DVDs!

Don't wax so that's not relevant. Was up north on Saturday so bought a fair few toiletries and own-brand medicines in Superdrug. Big bag of stuff for 20 pounds sterling.

Bring breakfast and lunch into work most days but we tend to go out for lunch on Fridays so not completely deprived. Also got duty free cigs lately and it saved me a fortune so will be doing that from now on, although i have already cut down.

body lotions, skin care ect i'm addicted. if i see a new product that has a nice smell i have to have it. i'm also quite bad for hair products. i feel no shame in spending alot of money on my hair every few months. i will go on alittle shopping trip once a month quite happliy and be left crippled for the next week. urban outfitters is my one true weakness.

Whether it's girly or not, I don't know, but I love cooking, and I can spend a bit of budget on ingredients for new dishes, etc. Guess that will have to be cut back a bit. And maybe eating out. But not too much, I love food :) And vino.

Have given up buying as much clothes and shoes as I used to, same as alot of other people I suppose. Every couple of weeks for a night out I'd get my hair professionally blow dryed - not anymore. Don't buy magazines anymore. Rent less DVD's - relying on films on TV now. However there are a couple of things I would not sacrafice or try do on the cheap and they are:

    - Highlights. They can only be done in a salon and I don't care what anyone else says! So expensive though and required so regularly.

    - Good toothpaste. How can you compromise the cleanliness/hygiene of your teeth by using a cheap toothpaste?

    - Good hair conditioner. Esp. with highlights a compromise can't be considered.

I don't really go without things, having been a student for so long I'm good at finding what I want cheaper. I watch for the clothes I want in sales or 20% off promotions. For example I bought 3 bras in M+S at the weekend in the final reductions for €1:) each and a Limited collection top for €9 (original price €55). Actually there's never been a better time for clothes bargains.

Magazines, I buy around one a week.

Hair, I've been having dry cuts for €15 and I get my colour done in classes if I can instead of paying full salon price. My hair is long so it just needs a trim, the dry cut is fine.

Waxing, found a cheaper salon and I sometimes shave but when I do it has to be Gilette Fusion blades (not cheap)

I think the one thing I have cut back on is buying random expensive beauty products, eyeshadows, etc. I only buy what I need or replacements for things that have run out instead of everything I see advertised.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 952 ✭✭✭bills

Still on the takeaway lattes at the moment but i am going to cut back & make my own & just drink it while stuck in traffic. Not working near that many shops at moment so have cut back on clothes, cosmetics etc. If you dont look you cant buy!! I think one of the last things to go would be my hairdressing bills- cut & colour every 2 months. Get it done in my hairdressers home as opposed to salon so do save some money.

given up going out every weekend, altho went out last weekend and it was soooo much fun cause i wasnt out in ages , and actually enjoyed myself more than when i was going out the whole time so there is a plus side

i only get my hair cut once a year as it is, i dont colour it or anything.. so wont be cutting that out :pac:!

the only thing that i really really hated giving up was buying vans :( but i have about 15 pairs that i never wore before, so ill get a start on wearing them

benefit website is wayyy cheaper than shops here even with shipping, check it out if you havent already ;)

I have vowed to not buy any more makeup till I use up the DRAWER full I have already  I'm a wagon for sparkly eyeshadows/liners that I never bother using, must start using them again :o

in college so am a broke student anyway but am still making some changes...yet i still seem to have no money!!

buying more own-brand stuff..to a certain extent but still wont buy the real cheap ass cosmetics.

eating less in college and more at home although this means im asting more time around the house watching crappy daytime tv

buying WAY less clothes..ie almost nothing. this is my biggest change and i dont like it one bit:( cant even seem to afford penneys these days

getting my highlights done in the student places for 40e as opposed to over 120!

    generally buying less crap

bringing a sneaky naggin in my bag when heading out!:o

For me it was restaurant lunches/dinners with the girls. Now when we meet up we usually end up going to one another's houses, works out way cheaper. Another thing I gave up was getting my hair coloured professionally. As luck would have it, as soon as I did this, I started getting my first greys. FFS.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,016 ✭✭✭Blush_01

I don't really do girlie stuff much - I'm very much DIY.

I have more unopened make-up accumulated over the past few years, so no more of that until I've used some of it. I end up wearing the same few items all the time anyway.

The "big R" isn't really doing much to my standard of living. You don't really miss what you never had. I'm looking at some of the things other people are cutting out - takeaway coffee, buying lunch, expensive haircuts and colour - and I feel a bit sorry for them, because it's hard to give those things up when you're used to having them.

cut out the take away coffees and fruit danishes...eat some food at work at lunch time which costs €1 per day...nice thing is though with all the gyming and no more eating of chocolate, lost about a stone in the last 6 months...

closed down my overdraft, switched my laser card over to regular card and cancelled my credit cards.. Lidl is now a great place to shop..

Go out about once a month at this stage - save a fortune and enjoy the night a lot better now as well I have to admit...:)

Drink water from the water cooler at work and no longer running out buying evian every five minutes.

will also be signing up at Toni and Guy colouring classes from now on and not getting my hair done at Peter Marks for €160 anymore...got the last batch of nice things from benefit in the states because there will be no more shopping....

    im the same.
i havent got my hair cut in about a year or so,dye it every 3/4 months and it only cost 8 euro because i sometimes only do the roots 16 for the whole head.

havent bought clothes much,1 dress this year and when i do shop its generally in pennys

dont eat out or get takeaways often, dont go to clubs so a night out would be to the pictures or going to a party only cost 15 euro max.

Didn't have to give up anything because we're not in R yet, but when we were moving to Australia and saving for a house I had to give up lots of things.

The hardest part was just not buying stuff generally because when you work, you feel like making a purchase helps you 'treat' yourself. That's the hardest bit, just not buying anything!

NOt really a giver upper, more of a cut backer! Still get waxing done, but for me its more of a necessity then anything else, just get it done less often and try diy at home. Still have a take away once a week, but im not a make-up person or mags or anything. I think movies where more my weakness, xtra vision do great deals on dvd inc blue-ray! Been having an bought myself the matrix trilogy on blue ray the other day.. my god its special.

I think its important to not take all the nice things out of life, cuz if you do that, what is there left, but you do have to make cuts!

Xiney - I reckon your Benefit scrub should be your one thing you just don't give up! Maybe just save up for it so it's not a big lump out of your paycheck. I reckon you should at least have one thing..so if it really goes to sh!t then at least your skin will look AMAZING lol.

As for me, I'm not in Ireland but being a student I've generally given up most things! If I was there, earning what I was and working where I was I would probably cut ouuut...God, I don't know...oh, that's right. My hideously expensive, but amazing cuts and colours for my hair. That was my one thing that I got done. Have never been one for lots of makeup etc and have always used fairly cheap skin care products.

Hope you're all going ok over there!

My hairdresser comes to my house and its half the salon price... anyone in cork can pm me for her details! She is amzing.

That boots scrub is lovely and a good price too.

I have stopped waxing my legs but still get ,y underarms and bikini done. I buy all my beauty products online if i can or in duty free.

I have switched my shampoo to yes to carrots and find it excellent!!! the treatment is excellent!

I treat myself by actually having a pampewr night one night a week. Another tip is to get samples from make up counters!!!

well the recession hit me nearly 4 years ago when i started college. i had to give up my sessions in peter mark. i soo miss that place. now i colour my hair myself and get a student discount when get the hair cut. never get waxed any bit of me so there was no loss there.. spoiling my godson to bits had to be careful on that one. living in crappy places but now moving into a penthouse apt with my OH when i get a job. :p driving a crappy 97 fiesta. was gong to get a newer car this year but decided against it.

that's it really for me folks

I used to go to the beautician every 5 weeks to get eyebrows tinted and waxed and eyelashes tinted - they are very very blonde!

I have a home eyelash/eyebrow dye kit now so I do them myself at home and I was surprised at how well it works out!

Bikini waxing is staying for the moment...I just can't bring myself to DIY!!

If it makes you feel any better I'm spending more.
Having deserted my hippy ways in favor of washing grooming.
I'd rather do things at home though, as has been previously said that bit of time spent with yourself for yourself. It is oil for the soul.
Besides the last time I went for an eyebrow shape at the beauticans I was left with one thick round brow and one thin archy.

I do most beauty things at home anyway so I don't get waxing, eyebrows, tan etc done so that isn't an issue. There's no way I'll ever give up my make up though. I buy less clothes but that's no harm, I have way too much crap that I never wear!

So not a lot really. I've always looked out for 2 for 1 deals etc so not much has changed for me.

I used to go to the beautician every 5 weeks to get eyebrows tinted and waxed and eyelashes tinted - they are very very blonde!

I have a home eyelash/eyebrow dye kit now so I do them myself at home and I was surprised at how well it works out!

i dont think id trust myself not to blind myself or destroy my eyebrows.. whatever about messing up a part you can hide with clothes you cant hide your face!

i trust the person doing it & she always does a good job so for now ill be staying with her.
