How did rental boys get ahead of Hardy Bucks? It's not even funny. The characters are annoying.

Is that in order of votes?

None of these shows really deserve it. Jenny Was A Friend of Mine and This is not a Conspiracy should have been voted out.

    Running Low shouldn't have gone.

While odd Chez Spuds could have become something more.

Anyway the way the votes are going its, the next 2 out are Psych ward and Pubworld. Granted pubworld is ****, but Psych Ward deserves to win IMO.

i seen during the week that rental boys had adds on facebook... could of helped them....

pubworld and rental boys to go out the next round... then its down to the main two...

rent boy is rubbish. I wonder if some of their budget is used to advertise on facebook. Psych ward is great. Dunno if it belongs on storyland though. and why is it rte drama.. When the winner is going to be comedy??
Hardy Bucks are going to run away with it but Rental Boy's topping the poll has a lot to do with the two main actors in it being involved in "diet of worms" comedy group which perform at fringe every year (dont know what their like) but they did have a show titled "dublin stories" on project haha on rte two in JAN. also on youtube. and believe me it is the worst of the worst of the worst.. just bad!! but as a result rental boys has a large dublin following.
Hardy Bucks is special though and even if it fails storyland I'm pretty sure any production company would wanna make it for tv. channel four yeah???

RTE Drama are behind the project. The commissions should have been for Drama's only will a different one for Comedy. But Comedy is a genre of Drama. They have several different Genre's which doesn't help the voting process.

    Hey Raymiiii,

I know you want to promote the Hardy Bucks, which you're involved with, and everyone's entitled to their own opinion. However it is in REALLY bad form to go around to every forum and post incredibly negative comments about our production (rental boys). Any it's even nastier again to leave us bitchy little comments on our you-tube videos. Please stop. I met two of the Hardy Bucks myself, they are really nice lads, I'm sure they have nothing to do with it.

    Gemma Creagh,

    Hey Gemma,
Okay your point is taken. To offend you is not what I wanna do obviously.
I have just taken a great disliking to "Rental Boys" because I think it's pretty poor. (Over the top maybe?) However I'm more a fan off "Hardy Bucks" rather than "involved" with it. I feel a comedy like that can use all the help they need because it's boarder line Genius. But yeah I totally understand it was bad form on my part for "dissing" your "Rental Boys" and for that I sincerely Apologise!

Hardy bucks is very clever, Granted. But it does not appeal to a younger audience. Thats why Rental Boys will win the competition and rightly so, it has the right people behind it and scope to go a lot further. That Ray sap is a ****stirrer...

Unlike the newbie who just posted :)

I will now exit as these posts become a scrap between the writers and the producers.

    Psych Ward FTW.

It doesn't appeal to younger people? Like 12 year olds? It appeals perfectly to 20-30 year olds.

were you watching the same rental boys?

the only way it has scope is if the writers strop trying to copy spaced and clerks.....or at least put a fresh spin on it. it doesnt have to be original (what is nowadays?) but at lease make it decent....i said it before its very uninspired....i didnt laugh once.....bucks on the other hand after inititially thinking it was only allright, repeated views made it comedy gold. rental boys doesnt have that.

Hardy Bucks is the only one that would stand a chance of being a success on TV, simple as that really.

Just finally got around to watching Hardy Bucks this morning. First time in a long time I have laughed out loud at an irish produced comedy. Maybe it is because I grew up in the Wesht myself that I can relate a lot to it, there are lads like them in every town and village around here.

As for Rental Boys, meh, a very poor mans Clerks.

Just watched episode one of Rental Boys. I think it's clear that they "borrowed" quite heavily from the guys at Spaced/View Askew. Not very good stuff I thought, especially when compared to the far superior Hardy Bucks.

    Hi everybody.

I've been following the storyland competition for a while now. To be honest I think the whole thing is very poorly organised. There should be a forum on the site or even a message board, I was ultimately disappointed with the website itself and the handling of video's. I don't understand why they haven't tried to bring the competition to the public eye, Ie RTE 2. considering the amount of money thats being spent on the project. It all seems a little drawn out to me. There is no interactivity with the site what so ever. And it loses it's appeal shrtly after the video is up.

My sentiments on the entrants are as follows.

Chez Spuds - The production value in this video was excellent, the acting was good, though I thought over egged by the son. I feel it was weired for the sake of being weired and, had the feeling that Mcabe didn't really have his heart set on the project. To him this competition was "Chez small potatoes". Excuse the pun.

The guy kevin shields who played Chez Guervarra was very good.

Running low - The first episode was good had a 28 days later vibe to it, with some nice cultchie humor thrown into the mix. Then For episode two Delainey had a face transplant and had turned into Mayo funny man Darrren Spain. Obviously Delainey had grwon weary of the project. It was very short too, and the lady who acted in this was over doing it a bit.

Pub World - I liked pub world, and Would have liked it to progress a little further. Its good to see such good special effects coming from such a short budget. I think that Ray Sullivan is a talented individual that deserves more credit for his work. There was a good deal of dodgey acting from the lead actor. The polish actress was a nice addition, and the Boxer was more than likely a lad from Back rock with a personal trainer than a yank. Hopefully they can continue to make more episodes in the future.

Jenny was afriend of mine - I found Jenny was a friend of mine was highly tedious and the acting in parts over hammed. The story was too vague in the first episode. Credit where its due for making the best out of different types of media, Ie mobile phones and web cams. It just wasn't gripping enough and the charcaters were dull. My favourite part was when jimmy Dee phoned up. "It's Jimmy Dee Babe!"

Happy Slapper - Another Screen works project, again geared toward the younger audience. I found the idea of murder over a school yard romance frankly inconceiveable. The leading lady's acting was like something from an ammature dramatics society. And what's the story with the Inner city howya who has worked his way into two seperate projects including psych Ward. Are they planning to merge later on?

Psych ward - There has been alot of good things written about Psych ward, and for good reason. It's production is smoothly done and the acting from the lead role is professional. I also like the character who is smoking outside. "Been there done that" it's the simple things like that which make the show, though I found it wained slightly in the second Episode. I also ask myself does it look so good in comparison to the other entrants of storyland because they are seasoned film makers and have been in the business for a number of years now? Or is this something that most people would be prepared to sit down and watch if it were on television.

Hardy Bucks - Seemingly growing into something of a cult classic, Hardy Bucks is interesting entry to the competition. Have we had enough of the mockumentary style comedy? Well obviously not. I Tried not to like the show but found there was a rural charm and honesty to it, With genuine lauhgh out loud moments to boot. That the other projects seem to lack. In Parts it can be very crude but seems true to life.
the first episode was a far cry away form there earlier youtube videos but it seemed a little too fast. Still there was alot of laugh out loud moments in there. They've succesfully captured the common subcultures that exist in small rural towns in Ireland. I thought the second episode was brilliant. I found that the more you watch Hardy Bucks the funnier it gets.I'm really looking forward to the next episode.

This is not a conspiricy theory - Well what can I say. A grown man living in a blacked out room somewhere in Rathgar worrying about alien abductions and agencies hunting him a little over the top. I also found it very odd that the lead has the exact same voice as Pat Kenny. Maybe its pat Kennys son. It took me a few goes to try and watch the full episode. It makes you ask, what was the difference between this and the unsuccessful Calum Morgan? Well rehearsed lines, but unfortunatley not much on substance there.

Rental Boys - Last but not least, this sitcom set in Finglas Dublin Seems like it could be popular with a Dublin audience. from a non biased point of view I found it was alot like spaced and clerks and TBH a genre I have grown tired of a long time ago. I tried watching spaced recently and found it was poor enough in retrospect, but not half as bad as scrubs. i can't understand how this S**te has endured our screens for so long this and the painfully dull two and a half gimps. And F**K the paramount channel for dumping this on us 24/ 7.

Excuse the stream of consciousness there, its like the English leaving cert all over again. Yeah Rental boys is good but compared with its stable mate Hardy Bucks it needs to work a little harder on getting the laughs out of the main characters. The lead character is a little weak so far. (no offence). I like Paul lennox he's very natural though. But who am I to comment. I'm interested to see how the story develops. And there not fooling me I often got videos out of that place.

Good on every body who entered the competition and good luck in the future.

I hope my opinions have been some relevance to this thread. and best of luck to everyone involved.

Well, not quite "raised" in England. He moved over here when he was a young enough lad right? I think he was eleven when he came over here.

SHREDDER well done on your first post. And at last a first post about an Irish TV show from someone who isn't involved. Or else you work for storyland and RTÉ :D

I have to agree with most of what you said on the each of the projects.

I couldn't get through the first episode of "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine" and the second episode of "Happy Slapper" was looking very like "Jenny was a Friend of mine", however I did like the first episode, I didn't think it was that amateur, it might have turned into a good psychological horror.

Psych Ward follow on nicely from the first episode and would have worked as the second part to an half hour weekly drama.

I think they should have had 2 storylands one for Drama and one for Comedy.

The only 2 good comedies Running Low (comedy/drama) and Chez Spuds are gone for me. Perhaps I am on the boarder of the Pale because I don't see the attraction of Hardy Bucks or Rental Boys.

I cant understand how rental boys came first this time. for me it is the weakest as it is so obviously a rip off of spaced etc. The acting is terrible too. I equate it to a student film. I like others only find Hardy Bucks to be entertaineing. The extended cuts of their episodes that they post on YouTube show that they are able to get alot from the budget they have. Running low was a terrible piece of work. It was like they knew that they were going to get cancelled so spent as little money as possible on the second episode reducing it to one scene of dialogue.

The point of this project is being missed i feal. Surely it is designed to give unknowns a chance to show what they can do? Then why to we have established production companies making videos. Also they episodes are meant to be, well, episodic. The only two entries achieving this are Hardy Bucks and Rental Boys. They are self contained stories each time. The other entries feel like a half hour pilot just split up into 5 minute scenes and drip fed to us. Just think about how much Hardy Bucks and Rental Boys fit into an episode. Their pacing is great.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

I think it is a small time project that is acting like a big time TV pilot I would not blame any of the teams for that. RTÉ drip feeding them 8,000 euro every month, allot of time and effort go into make 10mins of TV regardless of the quality at the end of it. And then you never know if you are going to get your next episode.

I've a ton of respect for the Hardy Bucks. They've making some absolute quality viewing on a pittance. I've watched the other shows and I honestly don't have a bull's notion how Rental Boys won the last round. It's not bad but the bucks are head and shoulders above any of the other offerings. I'll be following Storyland closely and if things are going the way they are, I'll be voting for the Bucks every time.
