    Sunday 2nd August

This morning was painful...legs tired from lsr yesterday and hadn't realised that the blister on my foot was going to be quite so sore and there was a very very very strong wind blowing in my face for the first half - but anyway, not the best run ever but it served its purpose of getting the blood flowing.

    Did a mere 3.16km in 20mins 22sec, avg pace 6:26.

No idea what is wrong with me this week....motivation has plumeted to sub-zero levels and energy levels not a whole lot better!! :( Haven't been running all week, getting a bunch of vaccines might have been part of the problem monday/tuesday but really!!!

Goin to try and go for a wee run tomorrow....

    Friday 21st August

Okay haven't run in about 3 weeks and seem to have had some sort of virus or something, no energy, dodgy tummy etc. Seem to be on the mend now - fingers crossed it stays that way. Did manage to make progress with thesis though, but I think I need to reevaluate my running aims for the rest of the year. DCM is out, I'll be doing field research and travelling from 1st September until 8th Oct and can't be guarentteed I'll get in any runs let alone the long ones I'd need. So I am bringing the runners with me and will see what I can do in an unstructrued kinda fashion. When I return I'll have 9 weeks to prepare for the half marathon in Waterford which I think is much more realistic. Might do a 10k along the way, think there is one near Castledermot but its on a new motorway so sounds pretty boring!

Anywho to get back into the swing of things I went for a short run this morning, more to pass my old apartment as much as anything else so there was a walking section passed the place but even without that I can feel the 3 weeks of no running and the virus have taken their toll on my fitness levels! 2.21km avg pace 6:44min/k

    Today 2.21km
    This Week 2.21km

    Hay Spacey,

Don't let it get you down, it was never going to be easy, there where always going to be set backs.
So if you dig deep and keep going the success will be all the sweeter :).

Thanks Mr A, leaving oz tomorrow for Timor so not sure really if I'll be able to get any runs in, so looking at it as if any I do manage are a bonus....and the fittness levels are bound to return. (fingers crossed).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,451 ✭✭✭spaceylou

And I'm back.....did some running in Timor, but not as much as I should have. The heat was bit much for running at times (c 40 degrees in middle of day) and running after sunset wasn't really an option for safety reasons. But I did run some and I'd like to think (in a deluded kind of way) that running in that heat was good for my stamina.

Unfortunately in the last week there I twisted my knee - thought it was okay cause it didn't hurt to walk and then I didn't have the oppertunity to run while I made my way back to europe but its now been over two weeks since i did it and running hurts ALOT....in search of a physio in waterford to give me an expert opinon cause if rest alone was going to fix it then almost three weeks should have at least seen an improvement.

Strangly walking is fine on my knee and 20 mins on the stepper this morning didn't hurt it either, although I could feel it was weaker than the other knee. Need to exercise while I write up thesis or I will go crazy!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,451 ✭✭✭spaceylou

Okay this is crazy - knee is getting worse not better...walking now hurts!! Well on hills anyway, but they are somewhat difficult to avoid. But the fact that the pain got worse is making me apprenhensive about other possible cross-training options, and I really need to do some exercise. Physio appointment tomorrow, hopefully he can shed some light on the problem and let me know what is okay to do and what is not.

Physio reckons I have a small tare in my petell......(spelling) tendon. Recommendation lots and lots of rest and ice, no running :(; another physio session next week....can cycle which I guess is something, so tomorrow i unbury my bike from the shed. Swiming is in theory also possible, unfortunately I swim like a stone although I was thinking of finding some lessons so might be an option.....but really, no running while trying to write my thesis - bye bye sanity!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,451 ✭✭✭spaceylou

Had a thesis deadline for friday and the weekend was largely spent out with friends so training only recommenced this morning.....SOOOOoooooo long since I cycled - and I think my bike may need a service, am sure the gears usen't be that jumpy!!

Anywho cycled 5.13km in 21:39mins @ avg pace 4:14min/km - no idea if that is good, bad or awful but reckon I can improve, build up the distance and the time I manage over the next few weeks while my knee gets better for running. Another physio session tomorrow.

Hang in there Louise and you'll soon be on the road again.

45 mins self-guided pilates this morning - would love to join a class, but they kinda pricey on my non-existent budget so will have to stick with the stuff I know for now....

Physio session this afternoon and might be going to the swimming pool tonight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,451 ✭✭✭spaceylou

Knee tender after yesterday's physio, but hey no pain, no gain - eh?!

So more cycling today - set out to cycle for 25mins and see how far I got. Which was further than I thought given that the wind was making even cycling down hill difficult.

    6.60km in 25mins 10secs @ avg pace 3:49min/km.

Forgot to stick these in the last post.

Pilates again this morning - think I will keep up this pattern for now of cycle one day, pilates the next and repeat until knee better.

Hope to go for maybe a 10k cycle tomorrow, there is a nice loop I can do close to home.

Contemplating doing either the Jingle Bells 5km or the Aware 10k......the distance in the 5k would suit me better in early december but looking at last year's results it seems like a much faster race than the 10k and my plan wasn't to race it flat out and not sure my ego could cope with being last home - second last, no problem but last - hell no! :p Will decide in a few weeks i guess.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,451 ✭✭✭spaceylou

Set out for a 10km cycle this morning, but forgot that loop was actually less than 10km and really didn't fancy the boredom of cycling further out the road and then back in again at the end. So all in all did 7.35km in 28:10min @ avg pace 3:50min/km. So still cycled further than any other session this week. Might continue to do some cycling when knee is good enough to run on again.

Haven't been out in a few days.....so set out this morning and did 8k in under half an hour @ avg pace 3:35min/km...knee is definately feeling stronger. Physio this afternoon so shall see if can try a gentle run or if I should leave it for another week.

Got the okay from the physio on wednesday to try running again this week. He suggested start really slow, with an easy 2km....which was my aim this morning. Plan was to run out the road for a 1, turn and come home again, shortly after I turned however knee felt funny. More than stiffness and discomfort (which I had been expecting), bordering towards pain (which would not be good) so I walked the rest of the way home rather than undo the good work that the physio has been doing!

Also have been looking at training plans and things, so have come up with a long term one with my aim being to target some 10ks and 5ks in late spring/early summer and then seeing how that goes, maybe consider training for DCM10.

The next five/six weeks are just about getting a base built up again, and getting my knee back in shape. Todays summary: 1.24km in 8:12mins @ avg pace 6:37min/k

    Running Totals
    Today 1.24km
    This Week 1.24km

Set out to try 2km again this morning, ease my knee back into life. Bit of a hairy start - garmin decided to loose signal and then I had to double back due to presence of large dog, barking threateningly in the middle of the road. I mean he was sitting there like some thing you'd see in a movie as an omen that you really ought not to go that way.....so i didn't!

In the end ran 2.87km faily easy, knee was pretty stiff especially around the 1.2 - 1.5 marks but ran through it and it was feeling better by the time i got back home. Avg pace recorded is a bit off because of the garmin getting confused at the start. It gave avg pace of 7:12/km but any time i looked at it during run was more like 6:30 - 6:50/km.

    Running Totals
    Today 2.87km
    This Week 4.11km

Need a focus so my aim in the next 6 - 8 months to run some races and get my 5km time to sub 25mins and my 10km time down to sub 55mins.

I am thinking of signing up for the Jingle Bells at the start of december, know that I won't be sub 25 for that but given I've never actually run a 5km race before, so long as I finish, it'll be a pb :D

Now I am off to investigate some races next year to have as my target races.

Why not Raheny 5 mile at the end of January nice one which in between the two distances you have mentioned. Two months should give you ample time to get in PB shape

Had Pilates class last night and felt fine after it, but this morning, I definately felt it when I was running, but body will get used to it am sure. Did just over 3km this morning with each split faster than the previous - avg pace 6:09min/km. Physio session later today for knee which is definately still stiff but hopefully this will either be last physio or second last session.

Hardest thing about running at the moment is the cold air - my poor lungs don't know what's hitting them!

    Today's Splits: 1. 6:16 - 2. 6:10 - 3. 6:00

    Running Totals

    Today 3.24km
    This Week 3.24km

I don't mind running in the rain within reason but draw the line at biblical style downpours so stayed indoors this morning and did some pilates. Has cleared up down here in the 'sunny south-east' so set out for an easy 3.5km at lunchtime. Physio said I can work up to 5km this week if I take it slow...So today did 3.5km at avg pace of 6:01min/km - possibly a bit fast, definately ended up doing the first km too fast - joy of running in puddles :D

    Running Totals

    Today 3.54km
    This Week 6.78km

Chilly but nice morning today......heading out about 7.30ish for an easy 4km. Included the route of the winter league which has a nice hill in the first 2km. Finished the 4km in 24:58min at avg pace of 6:13min/km - splits a bit off cause the hill at the start slowed me down and then the immediate downhill bit was much quicker. Might do the winter league once thesis is submitted (14days to D-day!!)

    Running Totals
    Today 4.2km
    This Week 10.8km

Exhaustion forced a rest day yesterday - no idea why so tired - blaming winter weather and lack of sunlight!

Headed out for an easy 3.5km lunch time today. Did 3.51 in 21:42 @ avg pace of 6:11....think I might need to start paying more attention to pacing as I increase the milage (kilometrage) cause today i set out to do really really easy run and at one point was doing 5:40min/km which there is no way I could keep up for a long distance.

    Pilates class later.

    Running Totals
    Today 3.51km
    This Week 3.51km

Pilates last night - was good. The class is really small, last night there was actually only two of us (me and my mum) and on the one hand that is great cause my mum is almost scared of exercise but on the other hand, it is going too slow for me....

This morning set out for a 4.5km run - disaster!!! Had to resort to walking at one stage. Legs felt like lead; knee was the stiffest its ever been since I started running again....cut it short and did just 4 in the end.

    Physio session later.

    Running Totals
    Today 4.02km
    This Week 7.53km (last week - 10.98km)

just back from physio who is advising that for the time being i don't run two days in a row, to give time for my knee to recover...should mean i avoid disasters like this morning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,451 ✭✭✭spaceylou

Haven't updated this in a few weeks.....blame the thesis - I do - and then the week I took off from the world when I finished the thing!! Felt in need of some relaxing and not being serious for a wee while in relation to everything so have been out running a few times but not keeping track to distance or times etc.

This morning quickish (I think) 20min run.....not sure how far it was. Pilates class this evening.

Starting to regain pleasure in running and knee is starting to improve. Left the garmin at home again today and just took a watch - did 20mins easy pace - reckon that it was a little over 3km.

Going to continue for the next week or two just going by length of time at a nice easy pace to A. let me enjoy without getting hung up on distance and pace etc and B. ease my knee back into frequent running.

No running planned for tomorrow, will do some pilates in the morning.
