I've done some investigative work and managed to find a few of you boardies to follow on Twitter. If anyone else wants to own up and provide their Twitter addresses, or those that are worth following in the Photography arena - please reply in this thread.

You can get me here: http://twitter.com/markstanley (not all, or even mostly, photography related mind you)

That explains my lack of interest, although George is twittering every afternoon on the radio.

Mostly meh! here too. If your job keeps you at a computer or you work in IT it seems to be very handy. Some people seem to spend their whole day on it. How I don't know. Like Facebook anything that keeps dragging me away from real life is getting short shift these days.

I have a habit of forgetting about these type of sites once a few weeks have passed.

Yep, i don't tend to get on much at weekends when i'm actually out doing stuff but when you're chained to a desk all day it becomes a welcome distraction, bit like boards too ;)

I think a job where your chained to the desk would be distraction enough in this climate ;) I don't see the attraction of Twitter.

Can't get it on my tractor........

    I'll have to upgrade;)

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,392 ✭✭✭AnCatDubh

I'm there - have been for a while but not overly active. Getting into it a little more of recent weeks.

    http://twitter.com/catdubh

Note: Some bugger who thinks he's bono got to the ancatdubh one before me..... grrrrrr.....

    A couple of suggestions to kick yez off - find someone to follow - well find a feed to follow. To get the gist of it, i suggest some news feeds - for example;

    http://twitter.com/RTEnews
    http://twitter.com/bbcnews

** These are high volume feeds (the beeb in particular) so they will flood your stream - whether this is a problem or not is up to you.

another one is the dream assignment twitter http://twitter.com/dreamassignment - this was a thread on boards recently. Out of curiosity I followed and I like what they do. A few tweets a day about photography related items. Yeah, they are pretty cool.

Next get yourself a twitter reader - the web interface is clunky and the reason why people may lose interest. For it to work properly, get an automated solution which will check and pop up your selected tweets. For firefox I recommend twitterfox add on which is downloadable through the firefox add ons. Then when someone tweets (at 3 minute intervals) the twitterfox checks and pops a message at the bottom of your browser. You might hate this or love it. I'm liking it.

Its more than just 'what are you doing now' - tweet about anything. Once you've a few in your follower / following circle, you'll get the conversation going and join in existing conversations.

There are conventions too and extensions like hashtags which are interesting and extend your tweets to a larger community than following/followers. So last night 'hashtags' brought the virtual community into a massive conversation / craic / analysis / slagging about the irish dragons den in live real time - the kind of thing that family or friends normally would do if sitting around watching something on the telly.

Works on mobile phone browsers - windows mobile is pretty good. They used to do SMS tweeting but stopped Ireland due to the cost of it. That can be a bit intense (in SMS format).

Overall, Life would go on if it weren't there but seeing as it is, I using it a bit and I like what i'm seeing.

Oh yeah, I too thought it was Meh technology - its beauty lies in the ultimate interesting streams that you are in control of creating by who you choose to associate with.

Explore others following / followers and if you see something interesting just follow them - there's no specific etiquette to it - i guess just don't be rude or flood the twitter streams or people may no longer follow you.

I think the blog awards are going to be twittered live tonight - probably by many peoples. I think marcus from pix.ie is there and may be twittering about it. Rick-O-Shea probably will be.

Oh yeah, an interesting one for any boxing fans - Kenny Egan twitters http://twitter.com/kennyEgan - he's been (or someone very close to him) twittering in the run up to it. Interesting to be a fly on the wall. He's fighting sometime soon too - On RTE2 if you are near a telly.

Anyway - more than enough for now.

I've been using facebook a week now and quite like it, but everyone I know can't stand it - maybe its like Coronation street , no-one admits to watching, and it still tops the ratings
