One climb on the route has over 3000m of climbing? Surely this can't be right.

It's 3.2km in length, no? Not elevation.

    Correct

So what is the amount of the climb (as distinct from the elevation, which I take it is measured from sea level)?

I don't know off hand, but you can work it out easy enough on toporoute.com

I reckon about 250m from the base of the climb to the top. That's an estimate though.

I was trying to use mapmyride to plot the Wicklow 200 route using the course description on the Wicklow200 site but got lost in the Donard / Rathangan "triangle. That area is not well described on Wicklow 200.

Anyway, I noticed an interesting feature on the mapmyride site. You can download elevation data for a route you plot. It gave 2509 distance and elevation points for the W200 route, so I used the info to calculate the gradient for each section (each of the 2509 sections averages 75 metres).

    Below are the climbs.

Would you be able to upload the route here so i can upload it to garmin after? Thanks!

    Roughly, from my Garmin:

Sally Gap - +386m over 9.59km (taking the start roughly at Crone Wood, end at Kippure entrance)

Slieve Maan - +249m over 3.35km (but note there is a +127m over 4.39km bump immediately before it, you then descend for the real thing)

Shay Elliot (Slieve Maan side) - +245m over 3.35km

Apart from this there are plenty of smaller bumps.

    Not on this year's course:

Wicklow Gap (Laragh side) - +334m over 6.93km

Some people got caught out by that bump last year. I remember one or two saying they thought it was Slieve Maan itself.

120 km before you get to it. Yeesh, that will be tough. 120 km is the furthest I've done so far. WIll have to start building up more distance

To be honest, I don't think distance is the main factor. Once you can get 150km under your belt, you'll be fine for the W200. What takes it out of you is the climbing. If you can do shorter riders with a similar or greater amount of climbing, you'll do fine.

Cheers, I can work on that easy enough alright.

Not at all. It's only February and I guarantee you a fair few people doing the 200 wouldn't have done that amount at this time of year.

Not in the slightest. Start training now, and I think just about anyone would be up for the 200... just takes getting out there and putting the miles in (I know I've not been you lot, so quiet!)

So when are you coming out of hibernation?

Anyone fancy getting together for a training run at Slieve Maan/Shay Elliot.

I'd be up for it - not this weekend though...
That route is about 180 for me ... at that time of year you will need to start super early and bring your lights ... maybe that's a bit much? Considering you will need a couple of breaks.

Depending on state of tickets/times I'll be out this Sat or next :)

Just got back in and see that there are a few questions.

Blorg answered the change in elevation question, but I did not take 100% of the climbs. I took the interesting parts, the parts you love to cycle.
We are close on the Slieve Maan figures, I probably missed a little at the start of Shay Elliott, and from Crone to Lough Bray on the Sally gap is only a warm up. :)

Height Start Finish Incr meters Incr feet
    Sally Gap 366.7 513.0 146.3 480
    Slieve Maan 199.0 441.5 242.5 796
    Shay Elliott 145.2 364.1 218.9 718

Fwiw I started training for the W200 around 23rd April last year, and had not cycled since the 100 in 2006. I'll probably start later this year. :D

The problem is I am not sure where the route goes between Donard and Rathangan. The description on the Wicklow 200 website is "continue on winding road to Rathangan". Is anyone tell me junction by junction the exact route from Donard to Rathangan I'll try to do it.

I think someone posted last years route on boards.ie a while back. But the route from the Sally Gap junction to Hollywood is different this year.

Many cyclists have GPS and I'm surprised that the Wicklow 200 organisers haven't put a file of the route on the site.

We need the WW 200 people to input the route to Mapmyride or google ... it's not that hard ...

Bicycles with gears, cyclists wearing lycra, navigating with GPS, recording times!!!

We want more of this -

    Hint: Look at the feet!
