Electro gone to ****

What do people think of this?

Used to love it, but the more i hear of it now, the more predictable its becoming. Artists like Tiga, Soulwax, Boys Noize, Justice have a complete strangelhold on the genre. It seems a new artist can only thrive in this genre if they're given the "erol alkan seal of approval". With the exception of Fake Blood, i haven't heard anything I'd consider in any way unique in months; i just don't feel new artists are supported here in comparison to techno or house, where new names are constantly producing big tunes, be it sebo k or the Martinez Brothers.

I seriously see it going the same way as trance, ie.downwards and more and more predictable and generic sounding......

Would like to know what people think about this.....

Thesre are the obvious exception of a few, say Alter Ego etc....electrohouse/electro - people know what i mean. Don't think the latter two are cheesy electrohouse at all!

Sorry i cant view the vids in work tho, who are they?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 220 ✭✭Entec

never heard of the last two , just presumed they were in the same style. shame alter ego when down the cheesy route

vids are from drexcyia, elecktroids, arpanet, dopplereffeckt, anthony rother

Yeah it is, but their back catelogue alone makes them stand out about the rest in the electro mould. Rother tune - is it father? That's very different to electrohouse........which is mainly what I'm talking about

Yeah I agree with you partially. What do you think of the new MSTRKRFT album? A lot of people don't like it and I think the reason for this is because it isn't a very "fresh" sounding album. But if it was released a year ago it would have sounded great. Its annoying also that Daft Punk haven't released any new material (excluding remixes) since 2005! Also Justice are going to find it exceptionally challenging to top the cross album. They are creaming that album so much. Sure last Monday they did a digital release of "Tthhee Ppaarrttyy EP".

Electro House is bad alright but id sooner listen to it anyday over that dreadful minimal or tech house:eek:

I admit i did like some electro house from 2006/2007 but then it just went crap and much of it like minimal sounds the same (although i suppose at least in a way it could be deemed as being somewhat uplifting)

    Soulful/Latin/Funky House all the way:cool:

Don't get me wrong, I love electro house. I like some minimal as well though. I wonder what will the next craze will be...

Apart from the first and last track (I particularly like the first one) those tracks are awful. I've always hated that really random sounding souless electronic stuff.

I think its an aquired taste then.

I really like all those artists ya mentioned like soulwax boys noize tiga and justice but are they really what you would call electro ? Sure beatport has them listed in there genres section as being Indie Dance/Nu Disco.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,945 ✭✭✭Anima

Thats electro house. Its normal house music with an electro spin on it. I like it enough, its can be catchy and works well on a dance floor.

Electro is completely different, its much slower and darker. Its supposed to be cold, sterile, electronic and machine like but theres a lot of upbeat stuff as well. A lot of old electro stuff has 808s and old analog out of tune sort of synths.

Sound quality is a bit ****.

i guarantee you listen to tech house and you dont even know it.

Heh. The soulless and repetitive minimal wouldn't be my own cup of Barry's either Wubba wubba wubba click click click click squelsh squelsh click click wubba wubba etc etc. I don't care if you think that it's intelligent, refined, subtle and discrete music, and that I should understand the structure to appreciate it... I like my dance to have a melody to it.

I personally think that electrohouse hasn't 'gone to ****e' per se, the sound has just become stale. And as well as that, there are some truly awful pop songs which utilise an electrohouse sound so that when you hear them on the wireless you want to switch over... this makes you not like the better stuff. AND there is an awful lot of **** out there.

I loved it when it first came out though. I would hate thought that the tunes posted here as 'electro' would be more 'electronica'. What's electronica then??

Nitzer Ebb, Aphex Twin etc - fairly far away from electrohouse anyway. Seriously though, if anyone knows any new electrhouse artists which they think are good i'd like to know.....

MSTRKRFT aren't the worst-i agree with ya there......Justice have had their moment, they won't ever be near DP's level....

I just associate electrohouse with all that Yeah Yeah and Perfect/Exceeder stuff that mtv dance shows all the time. Gotta admit I liked them for a while when I first heard them (maybe that's another admission for the 'cheese u like' thread), but as someone said above that whole thing has gone a bit stale.

Agreed....and will doubtessly contain tunes by boys noize, justice and the likes.....predictable ****e...........decent dj though

That's because Beatport was founded by John Acquiviva and Richie Hawtib - their type are hardly going to be labelling that stuff as "electro"

Im lovin POPOF at the mo, i feel he has kinda taken the best elements from that now somewhat stale and heavily over used and commercialised sound (from which i loved a lot earlier of angello/ingrosso/prydz/spoon productions in dat style) and fused it with a lot of newer techno type elements/style with fantastic results. i hav a load of his productions its a really solid and fresh sound i think, and its catchin on aswell ive already heard a few tracks in the typical copycatesque style (as in takin heavy influences from what he is at)

new MSTRKRFT album is pants. they put MCs rapping so ppl wont notice that nothing changes throughout the track. might be fun to jump around to if your hammered drunk, but... i hoped it would be good coz theres some moments of greatness on their first album. maybe the reason ppl say it doesnt sound "current" is coz a lot of tracks are over a year old, and have been doing the rounds on musicblogs. its sorta dance music for people who are not into dance music. thats why youl find a lot of electro remixes of indie songs- bloc party, etc.

i listened to some of shadow dancers new lp "golden traxes" today and it was the first time in ages electro house didnt annoy me. i want to like electro house coz its what got me into a lot of other electronic music, but maybe i should just move on. some justice stuff's okay but i hate their singles. i like the heavier side of edbanger like sebastiAn and the kavinski ep is cool. would recommend the shadow dancer lp though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,285 ✭✭✭eoinf

cheesy or not they all have some remixes/tunes/whatever. granted Justice & Soulwaxes name are muck at the moment but if anyone trys to deny they dont have tunes they can "dance" to, you can **** off. Tiga has a new album due out and some of the tracks leaked are pretty sweet.

Boys noise record label has some great artists.

anyone who can define what electro si is just thinking about ti too much , if you like it who gives a **** what anyone else thinks.

i used to think that music snobbery ony existed in other "genres" guess that aint the case.

if anyone makes anything anyway commercial they are automatically rubbished.

that Kid Cudi song is everywhere at the moment never once is it mentioned that its a Crookers remix.

Must say I'm into a lot of electrohouse stuff. Really like Justice, Soulwax, MSTRKRFT etc. Agreed the new MSTRKRFT album doesn't live up to expectations, but it does have its moments, Fist of God is an amazing song.

Some of the less commercial electrohousey stuff I'd listen to:

IMO, they're all amazing tracks, so I certainly don't think it's gone to ****.

amazing tracks? there all a pile of s**t in fairness. its just annoying noise

i dont think even electro or house should be mentioned in describing this music. just "crappy distorted noise"

    just my opinion

It may have went on to become massive but i remember hearing this in Ibiza when it was underground and was massive and was a great track at the time, electro house thesedays is mostly rubbish.

Yeah I have to agree with Entec to a degree. A lot of those tracks seem to follow a formula of just having vastly different sounding loud noises playing against each other. Its not nice to listen to and it actually pisses me off a good bit, its very irritating.

So if thats the cream of the crop then yes electro is shot to sh*t.

Not the cream of the crop at all, it's just whenever people hear electro house they seem to just associate it with the likes of Justice, Soulwax, etc and dismiss it because it's somewhat commercial. I was just trying to show that there's a lot more out there other than the well known stuff.

Don't get me wrong though, I'm not only into electrohouse, the above is just what I like within the genre.

Some of Paul Kalkbrenner's stuff is sort of like some kinda minimal electro house or techno type thing. I think. If this is important.

I don't know Paul Kalkbrenner very well. I like "bingo bongo" and "Mundgucci" is a class song. "Since 77" is a bit dark for me. Never heard of Munk before, I'll check him out now.

Does anyone else find the categorizing of electronic music genres really ****ing annoying ? Any thread about electro/techno/house will be filled with people arguing "thats techhouse" "no its electrohouse" blah blah blah. Gets on my nerves.

I love Justice, Soulwax, MSTRKRFT etc but can understand people getting sick of them at this stage. Out of curiosity, what genre would yea label Vitalic as ?

On that note, saw him in UCD a while back - perhaps the worst gig ever........full of first timers and the usual benders. He's completely sold out playing those gigs.......and I'd say the same for Digitalism - none of those guy have any new stuff which is another thing that pisses me off

Now Dusty Kid.....he has some great tunes under the "Duoteque" alias

Does my head in when people are really Anal about saying "Electro House". No one I know listens to 'Real Electro' and I have yet to encounter a situation where an actual confusion arises.

Anyway, I remember when "Electrohouse" came on to the scene with a bang... Before that I did not like it but I soon warmed to it. There was some really good stuff coming out for a good while but it soon became far too commercial and then came the onslaught of really badly produced stuff which just ruined it. I've never really been into the Krafwerk, Dr Lekrtoluv, Justice etc etc

It's like fashion, these things come and go, some stay longer and some are just fads.

Thought of another good electrohouse one I really liked about 3 years back, the more I think about it now the more I realise that there was some good tracks there, just got sick of it really.

It's just Electrohouse, you could give it a silly sub genre tag if you like but it'd just add to the usual confusing nonsense that goes with putting labels on music.

I second that motion...nothing worse than listening to people bitch and whine about what category, sub-category or super-snob-sub-category a tune falls under.

On another note, lets not all turn our backs on electro house, its done its justice (no pun intended) over the years. Yes, the large majority of electro house releases of late are utter turd, however there are a few gems out there that keep it interesting, you just have to look harder nowadays.

To summarise, I believe that your generic electro house sound has been milked to the last drop, even your "bling bling" rnb track are using electro house samples! Finding innovative electro house is a rare occasion these days but when it does happen, its exciting :-D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 668 ✭✭✭FLYNN-DOG

I'm not completely slating it either. I was completely thrown off dance music as a whole from abou 2001-2004 - dj's like erol alkan definitely reignited my love/obsession for the music.

With all due respect though, i presume you're not talking about Crookers when you say @finding innovative EH is rare but when it happens they're exciting". I wouldn't say their tunes are hard to stumble across for any electro house fan. If you know any good, recent, electrohouse tunes by any of the artists not already mentioned in this thread feel free to post them. I'd be keen to give them a listen.......

    but please no deadmau5!
