I have it on DVD - kids love it. What did you make of it?
I recognised Johnny Speight in the street smoking a pipe. He was the greatest writer in British television.

Tucker & Dale Vs Evil - noticed that it was on Netflix and put it on as a bit of fluff, but it's a lot better than I thought. Very much a horror-comedy in the vein of Cabin In The Woods or Cabin Fever, and a lot of fun.

Saw The Raid last night. Thought it was enjoyable but wasn't quite the frenetic and tense fight fest I had expected it to be. The film involved a depleted swat team as they try to get out of a slum tower block controlled by the local drug lord after things go awry. They must battle their way past hordes of criminal residents, who have been promised free and board for life in exchange for helping kill the SWATers, in order to do so.

Good premise, but I didn't find the action particularly interesting which was supposedly the film's main selling point. Very well choreographed action but I went into the film under the mistaken impression that it would be a more realistic knock down drag out fighting style or maybe everyone in Indonesia, including slum urchins really do fight in a *chop chop, kick, block-block-block, knife to throat, repeat x10* type way, I don't know.

Saw Killer joe last night. Very dark, sinister piece of work with touches of absurdity thrown in.Friedkin's direction is spot on as usual. Quodos all around for the acting performances and the final scene is mesmerizing.

Just back from seeing Seeking a friend for the end of the world.
I thought it was fantastic. Kiera knightley doesnt do anything for me but Steve Carell is on top form. A better performance than he put into Dan in real life or even crazy stupid love ( and I consider that to be praise).
Interesting story anyway. Stomper soundtrack. It is getting very mixed reviews at the minute but I would strongly recommend it.

    4****

p.s. only 8 people watching it in swords this afternoon so I doubt it will be around for long :(

    Better than "Kes"???

Friends With Kids - cracking little "romantic-dramedy" with a truly superb ensemble cast (Adam Scott, Jennifer Westfeldt, Jon Hamm, Kristin Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Chris O'Dowd...oh, and Edward Burns and Megan Fox pop up too).

The chemistry between Scott and Westfeldt is absolutely electric... and everyone puts in a solid performance - but Scott really deserves more starring roles - he's truly excellent in it!

Although O'Dowd's accent was ropey enough.

Something about O'Dowd and feature films that doesn't really seem to gel in my opinion. Always thought of him more as a television actor. Can't blame him for doing films if they come his way though.

    1. Weekend

    Wow.

    2. A Separation

    Also wow.

2 films that are the best that I've seen in while. Amazing scripts that leave you thinking for a long time afterwards.

See them 2 films before you seen anything else. You won't be disappointed.

Can't vouch for Weekend (might get the Criterion version) but A Separation is indeed amazing!

Weekend's a cool little film alright. Honest, simple and engaging. Very well acted, written and directed.

Saw a few new films down in Galway this week.

Citadel - decent if familiar Irish / Scottish horror. Over reliant on soundtrack scares, and the evil children angle is overdone at this point (think Ils / Them). Absurd, but the aesthetic is endearingly grim and grimy, and there are some nicely unpleasant sequences. The director addressing his agoraphobia through the film lends it some welcome identity too.

Unfair World - Greek film that plays like less humorous Aki Kurismaki. It's sort of a comedy, but so understated it plays more like a grim drama. Visually it's nice with long takes and unusual angles and set geometry. Its challenging viewing, but enough interesting ideas to make it just about worthwhile.

Portrait of a Zombie: They say if you can't say anything nice about a film, then don't, especially when the entire cast and crew is within earshot. It at least has enthusiasm behind it, even if the script and direction are less than amateurish. Sound recording was OK though ;)

Saw **** loads of shorts too. Worth checking out All the Way For Love, an extremely well made Africa-set drama with an Irish lead.

"Lockout" good no brainer sci-fi actioner with the new nutter from misfits in it.

Watched the first two Matrix movies, that Watch Channel is showing them at the moment, Revolutions is on Friday. Not seen them in years, forgotten how cheesy they are in parts. I know an artificial world is in essence contrived but after a while the sunglasses on everyone and the crap dance music for the fight scenes gets pretty comical. Hugo Weaving is excellent though.

Watched Pulp Fiction again over the weekend, love it, must have seen it 20 times now.

Decided to give Paranormal Activity 3 a watch. I'd seen the first one and found it entertaining (By which I mean funny, I've a weird sense of humor)
It was ok, fun film to watch.

    The Human Centipede.

I presume y'all heard about this one. This actually a pretty good (if f'd up) idea for a horror movie, I mean can you imagine much more of a horriffic situation to end up in!

That being said it ends up being in no way scary, the preposterousness of it all actually makes it kinda funny.

Yes I also saw it last week.
Not bad but I think the whole idea has gotten predictable now.
At this stage, I find myself more interested in the very ordinary yet attractive ladies that are staring in them.

Watched Aliens last night. Still an astounding film and probably the best sequel of the 80s. Cameron had such a hard act to follow but by, did he do the franchise justice. Excellent performances from all the cast.
It was the first time my wife saw it and she thought is was excellent.

I love that movie, I'm a sucker for small town/monster B movies so stuff like this and Slither I'll always give a chance.
