No, just that there are companies trying to make a profit.

As for the "cure", it's more interesting that they've found a "virus" that you can catch "... like the common cold" that can cause obesity. I woke up this morning and found I was 18 stone, I blame that little bollix at the KFC counter on Friday night, I bet I caught it from him!

of course they will, mary needs a life time supply, she is hardly going to pay for it herself

I'd love to see a comparison of how many people have this 'virus' and exercise + have a healthy diet against how many have this 'virus' and don't exercise + eat sh1te.

Results would be interesting I'd say. Also, the weight gain only last 3 months before the body builds up a resistance towards it, so I'd like to hear the excuses after that :)

    Damn fatties and their laziness.

Not all fatties are lazy and not all lazies are fat. It's just a happy coincidence that I am both.

That sounds like a load of hooey to me. A virus that whisks around your body making all the fat cells multiply?

Fat doesn't have cells so it can't multiply on it's own.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,158 ✭✭✭✭Berty

The author of the report could be both a fatty and a hypocondriac so the fat on his body could only be the fault of a fantastic disease and not all those burgers.

Apparently the drug is going to be as cheap as €1 per tab or so, i don't see the need for VHI to cover. And in the long run it would be cheaper for the economy....

Depression and some kind of avoidant/social anxiety disorder mean i rarely ever leave the house, and when i do, i dread the thoughts of it, so you don't have to look at me in particular. Although otherwise, your point, whilst ineffective and rather irrelevant, is comical at best.

Ah we all know how this will end. The drug will have unforeseen side effects which will cause all the fatties to initially lose weight but then to develop a horrible craving for human flesh and the weight will pile back on. So we'll have a fat zombie apocalypse.

At least Romero fans will be happy cause there ain't no way fat zombies will run after you - it'll be back to the slow slow stumbling zombies that we all know and love!

Has to be a load of twaddle. And it further compounds the issue of a lot of overweight people not taking responsibility for themselves.
I've still never understood why being overweight/obese/etc. is some kind of issue or problem for OTHER people?
Because some people bully others to make them feel better about themselves. Anyone who's happy in themselves would view the lifestyle of a very overweight person as terribly unhealthy and possibly disgusting, but they wouldn't hate the person.

Now i am not a scientist, nor a dietician nor a doctor, but something about this smells like total bull****.

I have some very simple facts about how the human body works that should call into question the findings of this study and the aims of the people behind it.

    1) You can't get fat without calories. Sounds harsh, but it's true. To store fat, you need to ingest more calories than you actually use. To store a lot of fat you need to do this over a long period of time, everyday. Your body will store excess energy in the form of adipose ( fat ). This will then be stored in fat cells. I understand that people put on weight due to medication, illness etc etc but by and large this will be down to other reactions within the body, not down to the storing of actual fat in the early stages.

    2) A fat cell, does not always mean fat. The study indicates that the number of "fat cells" will multiply, what the study or the article fails to tell us is that fat cells are always present in the body. Fat cell means a cell that has the purpose of storing fat if fat is present. It does not mean the currently used fat cells will multiply and be full of fat. The article implies that if someone who is 25 pounds of fat over weight caught this "virus" then they risk adding even more weight through no action of their own. This is bull****. I can think of no medical reason why a virus would be able to replicate a highly calorie dense material like adipose from thin air within the human body.

All in all, i am calling this bollix, or at the very most a complete mismash of actual study results designed to once again remove the responsibility that people have for themselves and offer then yet another quick fix option that will do very little to actually help with their health.

Good point, I suppose you could say it's the same with anti-smokers. **** thinking they know what's best for you (and I'm too cool to even take on board that they're right )

Maybe part of the reason this medication has appeared in the first place is the diet trend that appreared a few years ago. People on magazine covers weiging about as much as the apple quarter they ate for breakfast. Means that people who are deemed overweight are forced to believe that they'll need to cut 90% of food out of their lives when all they need to do is eat better things. Look at France and Italy etc... Their food is brilliant, really healthy and it shows on the people. And they hardly starve themselves. This "medication" is a fecking waste of money and time and is just seen as an easy solution. Yet another way of pharmecutical companies to rob the public.

Wow! Overweight people all over the country must be ecstatic at this astounding discovery!

People have neuroses, weaknesses, unhealthy compulsions and so on. Alcoholism, compulsive gambling, OCD etc., are all invisible pathologies that sufferers can conceal from the general public.

The fat are just unfortunate in that their particular weakness is on display so vividly. It is part of our genetic hardwiring to be turned off by weakness and obvious bad health, so a lot of people find fatness disgusting.

A bit like junkies. People are pretty revolted by them when they see them shambling around, even though they are too messed up to do anyone any harm.

The guy standing beside you at the bus stop might be a murderer or a rapist for all you know, but it is the obvious signs of sickness and weakness that turn your stomach.

I don't think anyone hates fat people, and is trying to victimise them.

Oh believe you me, they are around here! :)

But yes, excess lard is disgusting to most - and I'm sure nobody knows that better than those who are overweight. Once the person's ok as an individual though, I really don't get why they deserve to be bullied.

Of course they don't deserve to be bullied; nobody does.

You must be referring to something outside this thread which I haven't seen. I didn't think the comments so far were bullying, they were just people expressing their true feelings.

It is true that fat people would probably feel bad if they saw what people thought about them, but, like you say yourself, they already know that this is what people think.

If these pills come in burger form from McDonald's it's win all round. The only problem as I see it is fatties going hell for leather eating burgers non stop and ending up with bulimia.

The 'obesity virus' has been reported as far back as 1997, why is it hitting the news now? http://www.accessexcellence.org/WN/SUA09/obesity497.php

Also, I didn't see anything in any of the linked articles about pills, where are people getting that from? The articles all say pretty much the same thing, that up to 30% of obese people could be infected with the obesity virus. However, that still leaves 70% who aren't

I don't see why anyone would want to go about it the hard way if given a choice. It's against the natural order of things to not take the easy way out.

...because medically and more important genetically, its proving to be bad for us.

Got a problem? Reach for a pill.
Got a worry? Reach for a pill.
Feeling down? Reach for a pill.
Lose some weight? Reach for a pill.
Not eating the right foods? Reach for a pill.
Want to stop smoking? Reach for a pill.
Want to have more sex? Reach for a pill.
All blocked up? Reach for a pill.
    ...and on and on...

There are many, many genuine cases where pills are a godsend - but they should not always be the first port of call for an answer.
You know sometimes in the long run, it is better to put in the hard work too.

I mentioned they are bad for us genetically. Its been shown that we are are progressing as a breed called "human", our bodies are with further generations growing resistant to more important life saving drugs. Our bodies are so used to drugs now that a barrier at genetic base code level is strengthening.
Stronger and stronger drugs are now finding it hard to do their work because our bodies are rejecting them. We have built up a resistance or saturation point to them, not enabling them to let them do their vital work.

What pisses me off about this pill story is that drug companies will invest millions in this, when more exercise and less food would have the same effect, because they can earn millions on it. All the while diseases like malaria and sleeping sickness are being ignored because poor people are the ones that get those diseases.

Aaa yep, we can. Its called will-power (not pill-power). Some should at least try it sometime - some will fail but some WILL also be better off for succeeding.

Ah, but that's a bit TOO obvious. Like eating less is too obvious, much better to buy pills off the internet! Seriously though, I think people have been convinced that they need to help to lose weight/get fit. Maybe the rise in bus fares will force people to walk a bit more?

The overweight and cronically obese pay the price in the long term for their situation's with their health , image and self esteem issues .The pill might help but it wont stop the weight if the person taking it isint prepared to exercise and cut down on the overeating ,which is the cause of the ' problem ' in the first place .We are ment to and should eat to live , not live to eat .
