At least your starting price is good - £950 , and the VRT is SFA ;)

A newer one in the UK http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C413112

and of course where would we be without the Irish 'Bargain' of the week, 'REDUCED TO CLEAR' -
    http://cars.donedeal.ie/vintagecars-for-sale/porsche-944-reduced-to-clear/5391512

It's still going on - people trying to flip UK cars with high VRT not paid etc .
I'd prefer to go North and take my chances than buy the 944 here for 2k

    €900 for a 240D of dubious heritage?

A lot of those *SI / ZS Mercs were the first wave of UK imports when the market was opened - probably more rotted than a REAL Irish Merc of the same vintage :(

Here's another 'Original Irish Army'

80C reg, FFR, not to mention using Defence Forces logo - off to the Court Martial with him ?? :P

I too have my doubts about its history.

However, having said that, a lot of Irish Defence Force vehicles were exported (as opposed to auctioned in Ireland) - when the Army/Navy/Air Corps were finished with them - and many military vehicles fans subsequently re-imported such vehicles. (I have seen a few genuine ex-Irish DF vehicles with 'year' plates instead of their original plates).

I would have thought that the old Irish reg. would be reused when it was brought back into the ROI.

AFIK all Army stuff was auctioned off here, like the Garda stuff, and they didn't have any 'fancy' ones - they used a standard LR 109 painted Irish Army green. The UK ones had screw-off lens on the small lights. Lets put it this way - if you check the chassis no. on this one you'll 99% find it was a BRIT LR

Only if the guy importing it bothers his arse or can find the documentation at the time, to get this done.

If it goes through the normal process, VRT is applied again and a new number plate is issued.

The VRO will not tell you, that a chassis number already is known in the system. Sure, they'd loose out on a bit extra cash there.

Actually they will, or at least they did when the Revenue themselves were doing the registration process. A duplicate VIN is flagged when they enter it into the system. Happened me a number of years ago when registering two cars on the same day ... they mixed up the VINs so they tried to enter the same VIN for the second vehicle as the first, and it was flagged as previously registered.

Well, happened to me the other way around. It also all depends on how accurate the data is entered in the system.

Was there a mistake in the VIN, or did they try to charge VRT a second time on the same VIN?

Never found out precisely, as I got stonewalled by them. I brought the car in from the north and found out later on from the service history, that it had been registered in the Republic previously. Eventually I sold the car again and it wasn't worth pursuing it further.

Defence Force vehicles were mostly exported, or scrapped, until the peace process kicked in.

Just so there is no doubt, the registration of this (before it was imported in 2005) was V987FHU
Its very easy to check registration details, to check for insurance issues, finance issues,import/export details, write-offs etc. Most car dealers use this when checking potential trade ins...
Many of the so called 'original Irish' registered old cars listed in various threads and on donedeal are imports.

It'd just be a lot easier on the seller to say ' Land Rover 109 FFR, ex-army' - and as for the 'Defence Forces' logos, I'd say it's illegal to have them on a vehicle

I agree, if I wanted to buy a particular make of car, it wouldn't matter a damn where it came from so long as it was what I wanted. This obsession with number plates is mind numbing.
As for the logo, not too sure on that. Is it not just a case of 'dressing' up, rather than trying to pass it off as an actual working army vehicle.

Funny I have never seen a blue Avenger with GARDA on it!

I remember sitting on a beach, I was in my first car so about 9 years ago now and there was one of those being hooned about the place until they eventually blew the engine, I was saddened to see such a beauty get destroyed
