    Hi,

I'm trying to lose weight as it's the New Year and seems a good time to start, thought other people trying to do the same could chat here and tell each other how they're getting on, talk about hard bits, progress, methods, whatever!

Yeah more for moral support sorry if the title is misleading!

Ok I'll try really hard tomorrow too and be honest about what i eat tomorrow which will shame me into being good!

Maybe you all can do the same? And also say any exercise you're doing?

I know this may sound silly but a good tip I heard was at night when you're sitting watching tv, for every break say in an hour, stand up and pace on the spot for the 5 mins, will add up to 20 mins a day! Just to help!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,639 ✭✭✭LightningBolt

Is that 20 mins from watching 4hrs of tv a night or throughout the day? If from tv just go out for a nice stroll for half an hour and enjoy sitting on your bum for the other 3 odd hours.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 164 ✭✭CeilingCat

Best investment ever - mini trampoline/rebounder (26 yoyos from Argos). 5 mins on it whenever you have a free 5 mins, raises heart rate, good for lymph system :)

Calculate (roughly) how many calories you're burning for your weight doing all kinds of activities:
    http://primusweb.com/fitnesspartner/jumpsite/calculat.htm

This site is good for tracking your daily intake etc. etc. etc. - I don't usually bother with these type of sites BUT I like this one because it will tell you your nutrient intakes and highlight what you're not getting enough of, or if you're not taking enough calories.

Ouuh I have a tip. If you a little fat with your breakfast in the morning. I take my omega 3 supplement then.
It takes longer for your stomach to process things. So you stay fuller longer.

I've lost 6 lbs since the start of January, without dieting or exercise. :p

    How?
    Been sick

    Snap, moonbaby. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,308 ✭✭✭Pyjamarama

I've been trying to do exercise dvds and using my exercise bike. I'm great for a few days but then tend to get distracted  eating healthyish but still can't resist chocolate :( As in today, lots of chocolate and no exercise!

I'm finding it good to have something you can do at home so you don't have to brave the horrific weather outside!

The fitness forum is for all levels of 'fitness' and I am sure if you had your own thread the mods there would be very supportive.

This is great Dragan! I lost weight before and then realised how much I missed eating so I need to start all over again but I know I can do it cause I have done it before! Just nice to have other people in the same boat who can help eachother out!:D

That is a brilliant post Dragan.

To put some numbers on it, I'm a size 16 and I'd like to be a size 14. So I'd have more choice with clothes.

Mostly though I want to know what it feels like to enjoy being fit.
We are blessed to have healthy bodies, and I want to stop taking that for granted. Because you never know what is around the corner. The choice to be enjoy your physicality that way, may be taken away from you.

You really have to start eating breakfast linguo!....it makes such a difference to your sense of well being and metabolism.

Yeah need to force myself to eat a banana in the morning to keep me going! There's a Curves in Artane too that I think I am gonna join soon as I get paid, prob by 6th Feb

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,846 ✭✭✭barbiegirl

I'm all on for this, but guys everyone has to eat breakfast, it's must even if it's brown toast and fruit. Me I'm a porridge girl, plus coffee and some fruit or nuts. (4 WW Points)
For me it will be the getting out and exercising thing that is hard. New to my area and have no-one to go walking with, so easy to not go, cause I'm not letting anyone else down :-)
    I'm down from a 16 to a 14 and want to be a 12 :-)

I also recently started a health kick and am doing well so far. I rejoined weightwatchers and also Curves in Phibsboro - I've been a few times and I really love it. Curves has an offer on at the moment for 99 euro for the year joining fee and 39 per month (first month free). I think both are money well spent - just think of the cash you spend of wine, chocolate, junk (whatever your own downfall is).

Week one and I have lost 3.5lbs. I am delighted and hope to see a steady decrease over the next lot of months.

My first goal is also doing the connemarathon half in March - have also started to train for that in earnest.

What is good about the ww and curves is that you get that group support as well as the feeling of taking decisive confident steps to better your health and well being.

Hoping to lose 2lbs this week - fingers crossed.

    BB:)

yay! it's so nice to have a ladies thread on this! ok so i'm joining the ymca today (i was suppose to join yesterday but the car wouldn't work in the morning) and i've joined a mixed martial arts fitness class (that'll be on two mornings a week).

so monday(mmf) tuesday (cardio at gym) wednesday (mmf) thursday(break) friday(weights). thats four days a week. i'm thinking of swimming one of the days at the weekend but thats further down the road.

got a bunch of healthy food in the house last night but still need to pick up a few bits to stock the fridge. i'm a stone and a half away from my ideal weight which isn't so bad but i want to be more toned so i guess it'll be inches i'm looking for change in, not the scales.

i'll update each week so i'll have to face embarrassment if i don't keep it up.

You dont actually have to do 50 pressups before you enter the fitness forum. Even if you dont post there, have a lurk, theres lots of really good info.

    Other than that,

    Support,
    Support,
    Support and more
    Moral support :D

Good luck to all of you who are reading and contributing and having a go. Its always easier when theres a group, and you have to come back and compare notes on how youre doing. Keeps you motivated.

And for anyone considering a marathon, I take my hat off to ya. Fabulous aim to have.

    :)

Some of the Curves on the southside are doing an offer in Feb where they're having a food drive for some charity, and if you show up with a bag of groceries to donate, you don't pay the joining fee. I don't know which ones are doing the offer, keep your eyes peeled tho, or ring your local one and ask.

Free standing items of home excercise equipment will eventually be used as a clothes hanger. Fact. :p

I want to get back into my 12's, and I reckon 2lbs per week for about 10 weeks will do it. I really need to start going for walks again, for the fresh air if nothing else.

I was able to drop a good bit of weight before, and I find the following really helped:

Buy all your healthy stuff ahead of time, and make sure you have little or no need to hit the shop again for the rest of the week - allocate all your expenses and leave the rest in the bank (or somewhere hard to get at). The idea is not to have cash floating around to buy unhealthy stuff with so you'll have to eat the healthy stuff in your fridge.

Prepare what you can to have it handy for when you're rushed or not in the mood - make home made soups if you can, they're a life saver. Smoothies are also a lifesaver.

Common sense this one really but buy food with as high a nutrient content as you can so you'll be less likely to feel unsatisfied.

To force myself out for walks, I used to set my phone alarm to go off in 15 minutes, then just start walking. When it went off, I'd turn around and head home. I found once I was out I'd stay out longer than 30 mins most times, and I was doubling the time after a week or two.

Mini goals always worked better for me than looking at the bigger picture. I'd take it 30 days at a time, and tell myself anyone can do anything for 30 days. Any time I wanted junk food, I'd tell myself 'it'll still be there in 30 days' or whatever - it really worked :)

Same with doing excercise. I use a mini trampoline and a mini stair climber thing at home, and I used to literally hop on for 1 minute at a time to begin with, and really go for it. Knowing you've only to do it for a minute makes it seem like nothing, and before you know it you're increasing your time.

I used to time myself walking, and counts reps with weights/other excercises and always try to beat my own number the next time. Very satisfying :)

Herbal teas are your friend! They take the edge off your hunger, and stop you from drinking tea & coffee (which can set off cravings anyway).

(edit:) Split your 3 meals into 5 smaller ones (which will usually mean planning & pre-preparing stuff if you have a job with standard break times)... boosts metabolism and stops cravings during the day.

I know there were other things I used to do but I can't think of them at the mo....

They're defo doing it in Blackrock & Bray, and as their offers seem to be the same across the board I reckon a lot of the other branches will be doing it too.

sorry what exactly is current deal?Is it 190 or lower?seems expensive!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,928 ✭✭✭✭rainbow kirby

Personally, I'd rather go to a real gym than Curves, but then again that's just my opinion. I'm currently trying to lose weight myself, I've lost just under 3 stone since July, and have gone from a size 18-20 to a 14. I'm trying to lose about another stone and a half, and I'm doing that by eating relatively healthily and running too. Did my first 10k in December, and will be doing both the Great Ireland Run and the Women's Mini-Marathon this year.

I've signed up for the Cork marathon in June. I'll be walking it. I did the Dublin one in 2007 and lost nearly 2 stone from walking and health eating for it but i've put a stone back on in the last year most of it over christmas, so i'm out walking again in preparation... not tonight though, it's miserable out there:pac:

    I didn't get any excercise done today. :( Tomorrow...promise....again.

Went to NKOTB last night so walked from Luas at St. Stephens Green to the O2, danced and screamed my ass off, then walked all the way back to Luas (in the rain), so I think that was 70 minutes walking in all, at a decent pace as well as dancing. Tonight though I know I have to prepare food for a dinner party tomorrow night, so can't guaruntee a walk tonight or tomorrow, but will try. Though I have to say I feel a cold coming on after getting wet feet last night :-(
