I am worried about my fitness too, did a 30 minute stint on the x-trainer last night and managed about 6k, but I know that doesn't really mean a lot. Have mapped out a 5.2k route from home so have to give that a blast... gym tomorrow and tollymore mountain biking on sunday this weekend tho so it'll have to wait.

A few of us have started a North Down: Comber, Ards, Bangor and surrounding areas 'get fit for the hotel' club.

Any of the new guys or anyone else interested in joining in send me a PM. The basic idea is that we just meet for the odd run maybe each map out a 5k route and take turns doing each others route or some such but the main thing is to encourage each other in a group. :)

Welcome to the new boardies! I'm apparently your friendly boardie liaison btw... I was volunteered since I am likely to be the only English guy in the squad :D

You were volunteered since you are likely to be hopefully the only English guy in the squad. :p:D

    Hey PC Inwaiting

I wouldn't worry as i think i will be in same boat unless i become super fit over next few weeks, i have alot of work to do, nowhere near the standard i want to be, hope it doesnt add to much extra pressure in first few weeks. I picked up a good book on amazon called running made easy, tailored towards starting from scratch, contains a 5k running programme, aiming to get you up to 5k in ten weeks, i know time is def not on our side!!!!

    Hey Sony,

any handy tips from this book? Also not too confident in the fitness side of things. Especially the bloody bleep test!

    Typical Englishman...... Deluded! ;)

Sure you're not a proper Englishman. You said your parents didn't make it over the boarder. Does that make you Welsh or a Scot?

It would appear that not too many of us are confident about the fitness side of things. At least I won't be on my own then. :D

Another one, I love how you all keep finding us.

Yeah the board was a real help when I was going through everything and it helped with the endless waiting.

Another male, us ladies are well outnumbered now.:)

My advice for the fitness. Start of by trying to build up a base fitness. To do this just go out about 3-4 times a week and jog/walk at a pace that you would allow you to talk to some if they where with you. Try to keep this going for 30-40 mins. Dont worry about distance yet. As there are time restrictions i would do this for 2-3 weeks. (Remember the 3 mile run doesnt happen until week 5 I think. This gives us 11 weeks aprox from now to get ready for it)

After this I would start to add in a few short fast runs instead of some of the slower runs. For example start with 1-2 miles and run them as quickly as you can. While doing this you should not be able to have a conversation with someone who is running with you.

The schdule of running might look something like this now. Mon rest.........Tues rest.....Wed slow run........thurs rest.........Fri fast run........ Sun long run

You could add in another fast run or slow run on a rest day depending on how your body is feeling. Remember to listen to your body the last thing we want at this stage is overtraining leading to sickness or worse an injury!!!

I would start with this and see if the running improves, which it should do. I would also try for 2-3 all body weights sessions each week aswell as strenght is important, but again be aware of over training and injury!! The only thing I will say is the consistency of training and trying to push yourself each time is the key to success.

Now this may help but maybe Im just full of the maddness!!!!

I think i'm like a quarter scottish or something... my mum's sister and husband still live there.

And i meant I am English they just didn't make it out in time!! :D

You did now tell us ur ASL, are you aBHM or a BHOF, perhaps we should meet F2F? I'm looking for a DWM with a GSOH but I wouldn't mind if you were MBA ;) look for someone to spend some R&R with but if it involves NIFOC well...

Hehe welcome to the board and grats on your selection :p

What we up to now 16 boardies??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 469 ✭✭DownMTBer

BTW new guys, the Blue Squad's official boardie 'secret handshake' is the top gun high five - anyone who just high fives and doesn't do the top gun is not a Blue Boardie and is an imposter!! :D

Oh and don't listen to Morri, opening double doors and waving it at the girls is not compulsory - enlistment in the class in the art of stealth however is entirely compulsory for my room mate!!

What was that class called again!?

So have you actually started up your little running club.

I just started my shopping, well when I say shopping I mean taking pens, paper and highlighters from my office.

There's plenty of good places to run out that direction too. We could take the running club on tour, or start a Belfast branch of the Boardy Running Club. :D

    Hi all,

Can I add myself to the list of march 8th intake? :)
Really excited and have been starting to think about the fitness myself. I'm not bad at running but its the upper body I need to work on.
O my details.... female, RC, merit 640-660. And with a merit that hi, I was shocked when I got the phone call!!

    Well done!

Guys with people from the same background (RC) with worse merit numbers than mine joining the March intake, does that mean they will definitely offer me a place? (whether it be April or after)

I passed vetting back in October if I remember correctly. Passed every thing now after a bit of a medical issue, but that was sorted before the new year...

Are you sure? not meaning to worry you but look back through this thread for my posts and see what happened to me...

I know they've a lot to deal with but communication between OHW and Appointments doesn't seem the most efficient.
